那須岳の中腹を横断する道路を車で走っていると開けた谷に出て駐車場がありました。車を駐車すると殺生石と書いてあります。殺生石という名前から硫化水素が強く噴き出して生き物がバタバタと倒れる場所というイメージを抱いていました。実際には硫黄の香りがして、木は生えていない場所ではありますが、駐車場から他に沿いの遊歩道を上がって近くまで寄ることができ、いわゆる地獄と呼ばれるような場所のように噴気があるわけでもなくちょっと拍子抜けしてしまいました。

殺生石は、那須湯本温泉近くの那須岳の斜面にある巨大な溶岩です。
１９５７年に県史跡、２０１４年に国の名勝に登録された。
室町時代の文献などによると、九尾の狐が美しい女性に化けて鳥羽上皇を殺そうとしたところを陰陽師（おんみょうじ）に見破られ、那須まで逃げた末に退治され石になった。
石が放つ毒気で多くの生き物が命を落としたため「殺生石」と名付けられたということです。
2つに割れていました。^^;
