《湖東三山》は【百済寺】の《喜見院庭園》、【金剛輪寺】の《明壽院庭園》、【西明寺】の《蓬莱庭園》と夫々庭園を持っています。 しかしながら 他の2ｹ所の庭園はどちらかと言うと 平面的ですが こちらは 斜面に作られ 立体的に 石組と苔の美しさが目に入る仕掛けになっています。 更に 石組として 鶴と亀の組み合わせは 珍しくありませんが 鶴と亀の石組の内 鶴で《折り鶴》を模した石組は とても珍しいのではないでしょうか。 こちらの庭園が持つ独特の美しさが 今年10月 CNN（米国ﾆｭｰｽ専門放送局）による《日本の最も美しい場所 31選》に選ばれた一因ではないでしょうか。

Lots of steps, but not lots of tourists though enough to cause us to have to wait to get photos without other people in them. This temple is definitely worth an autumn visit and it’s less crowded than temples on the main tourist route.
The main attraction for us was the garden though the temple buildings are spectacular.
And what a garden it is! The entrance area had many momiji along with several very impressive sakura in bloom. One 250 year old Fudan-zakura is a National Treasure. The literature says this is one of the few places to see blooming sakura and momiji together, but we have seen the two together in many places. Here, however, in the lower garden it was stunning, with the large blooming sakura up against many red maples.
The walled garden proper is entered through a low door. Once on the other side of the wall you are in another world: ponds, bridges, stones, lanterns, sculptures, walkways around the pond and up the hill to the exit on the upper level. We walked the paths several times photographing the trees and the pond from many different viewpoints. We saw others just take one cruise around the pond and leave.
An excellent way to spend a half day!

江戸時代の延宝元年（1673）に望月友閑が西明寺復興の記念に造った庭園で、国の名勝庭園の指定を受けています。
中には池があり、池の中央には折り鶴を形どった鶴島と亀島を配してます。
大名にして作庭家・茶道家の小堀遠州の庭を参考にした造られた庭園だそうです。

西明寺では不断桜を見物した後、長い石段の参道を上って行くと本坊庭園「蓬莱庭」があります。直前に金剛輪寺の広い庭を見ていたので第一印象は小さな庭と感じましたが見るうちに庭造りの巧みさに魅了されていきました。池、植栽、石組、苔が調和した大変美しい庭です。斜面を利用して広がりを感じさせる巧みな技に感嘆します。斜面を上り上から眺めると更に見事な美しさでした。

西明寺本坊の前に広がる庭園で、国の名勝庭園の指定を受けています。
説明板に、1673年（江戸時代）に西明寺復興記念として望月友閑が造った庭園で、池には鶴島と亀島を配す池泉鑑賞式、山の斜面にある立石群は本尊の薬師如来、日光・月光菩薩をはじめとした仏様を、植木は雲を表し、全体で薬師如来の浄瑠璃浄土を表しているそうです。
説明を読むまでもなく、池を中心に庭木や石灯籠を配し、苔むした庭園は美しさと趣きがあり、しばらく見ていても飽きなかった。
