There used to be 24 utase fishing trawlers in Ashikita port, but now they are down to 5. Utasefune are sail-powered bottom trawlers, and used to be a common site on the shallows of the Shiranui Sea and the Inland Sea. One of the last in this port takes tourists out for a short fishing experience.
Just as with real fishing, where you go and what you catch is up to the weather and chance. There was a bit too much wind on the morning we went out and so we didn't go much farther than just outside Nosakanoura Bay and not out to the Amakusa Islands as planned. We also didn't catch too much other than some shrimp and small crabs.
The captain used the motor to get us out to the fishing spot, and then he and the crew of two hoisted the sails and put out the trawling nets. While the boat was pushed sideways downwind, hand lines were available for anyone who wished to fish by this method. At some point, we all went into the small cabin and had lunch that we brought around a small table. The cabin is air conditioned and has a flush toilet and sink. The deck area is not spacious but their is room to move around if you watch your step. It might not be too safe for young children who don't pay attention to the work being done on deck as well as all the obstacles lying around.
After a few hours, we came back into port, and since the actual fishing wasn't too good, some fish from the port were distributed to the participants.
It was an interesting experience, and if you like to be on the water, you would enjoy it just to watch the use of the nets and sails. You need a car to access the port, and Japanese to arrange the trip as no one speaks any other language.
