This is an historical site of some significance yet it is a total disgrace and an embarrassment. I don't know who the owners are but they ought to be prosecuted or forfeit their ownership rights to someone or somebody that actually cares. Access was via a stile in need of repair but after a few metres you are stopped by a padlocked gate. The sign at the gateway is the best feature. Spend your time at Tawhiti Museum.

The name indicates the stakes on which the heads of the slain enemy were mounted to warn prospective attackers of their likely fate. And this was from the 16th century. It is also very historical place from the New Zealand wars but there isn’t a great deal to see but worth a visit anyway from its historical significance.

I mean there isn’t much wrong with this place.
It’s a great place of historical significance. Which is awesome. But there isn’t a lot to do. Not something you would really visit many times. Once is already too many.

This is such a significant historical site left to deteriorate and degrade. It is such a shame. If you want to know about the story and history of the site visit Tawhiti Museum, everything about it is outlined there. Information at the gate would be appreciated as to what is going on there re the restoration and also a story board and picture of the site outlining the history would also be appreciated. So much potential just being wasted.....

This place is amazing if you are even slightly interested in NZ history. This is an old fighting Pa site where Maori and British solders had a battle. THIS IS A MUST SEE AS YOU CAN WANDER AROUND ON AND IN THE BATTLE SITE

I remember spending time here when I was growing up in Patea. We spent a long time here today feeling sad that this important historical site has deteriorated over the years but left knowing that the wonderful caretaker is doing everything he can to restore it. I was impressed with his achievements so far and will return next time I am down this way. We made our way up to the monument and I would recommend you do so and also visit the Waihi Cemetery & Redoubt so you can link their history. If the gate is locked you can still access the site through a gate. Just go in and enjoy the peace and quiet and soak up the atmosphere. A place NZers should visit.

It is important to first visit the Tawhiti Museum to get the tragic background to this site. Allow a few hours at the museum to get great value out of it. You will be more sensitive to the sadness and tragedy of this historically significant site

A rather untidy basic attraction , sure it has historical significance but it is a rather run down place. Don't know who administers this property, but it is just grazed with animals. There are some explanation boards that one can read that explains what happened here.Just seem's a shame that it is not administered by any organisation, but it is probably a cost thing and nobody wants to contribute towards it . It is an okay place if you just want a basic quiet place to wander around.

We travelled to Turuturu Mokai pa site after reading the history of the pa and neighbouring redoubt - knowing the history will make this trip a different experience. Imagaining the terrible happenings as we walked through the still very visible earth-works, village sites and redoubt memorial gave us a great appreciation for the location. The (voluntary?) site managers need a lot more help and funding to clean up the site and provide more signage to explain what's around you - this could become Haweras greatest attraction without doubt.

Locked gate. Disappointing. What else can you say. We would have loved to walk around this historic site but sadly are locked out. Signs saying Council dump.
