Since last year different mushers are running it. After a very tough hike up, had a rest at the basic lodge. Then we went to say hello to some of the dogs - they were happy for being petted. All of them looked well fed and cared for.
Next day the preparation of the dogs, and the relatively short sledging was a unique experience. Some of the dogs got shoes on, while others were barefoot. There were 2 Inuit mushers, and one Spanish guy who also works at the glacier lodge.

Very nice dogsled trip on the Lyngmark glacier - and the hike up is spectacular with views over Qaqertarsuaq and the surroundings

To make the long story short, I can only confirm the previous evaluation of Josefin in each single word.
I don´t want to write a repetion, because my experiences with the dogsledging on Discoisland are the same as in the evaluation written before. I am one of the mentioned "Two tourists from Austria...". I didn´t make a sledging tour by myself, but i visited the place where the tours start, watched the events and could make my own picture.
So if you really want to make a dog-sledging tour in Greenland, wait for late winter or spring, when there is enough snow around but forget about the tours on Disco island.
Sadly Disco island is the only place in Greenland where dogsledging is possible in summer too.
But believe me, it`s not what you may expect in your imagination of "dogsledging".
As written in the review before, there is no snow on the glacier, it´s razor-sharp icecrystals covering the whole surface.
And even if you should be happening to not care about the dogs, you can easily forget about the trip on the icecap, because its not scenic at all! There is only grey dirty ice and you move with an approximate speed of 5 miles an hour. The dogs don´t run because they CAN`T run! It´s much better to hike up to the glacier and to take a trip around on foot as long as you like. Even the views are much better this way, because you can stay on the margin of the glacier and look down to the sea and icebergs. The sledge moves inbounds and there is only this dirty, boring icecap (see picture).
At least, who wants to sit on a sledge moving at a snail`s pace and follow a bloody track left by the dogs bleeding feet?
Think about it!!!
Disco-Island has got many other places of interest you can reach without the help of mistreated dogs.
It´s simply up to us to change the things we dislike.
So if you dislike the happenings mentioned before, forget about the expensive and mindless experience of dogsledging on Disco island during summer.
Or if you can´t resist to make the trip, at least make enquiries conscientiously about the dogs conditions before, so Lyngmark Tours clearly can see that people worry about the dogs and, when indicated, you might refuse the trip.
I hope things changed in the meantime.

After lunch on Lyngmark Glacier it was planned to go with dog sledge for one hour. Two men from Germany had planned the same tour and was going up to the top together with us. After only a few minutes on the sledge we discovered blood on the ice and that some of the dogs were bleeding on there paws. The dogs did not have any shoes on, the shoes were laying on one of the sledges that was not in use. We told the dog driver to stop immediately and we both went off the dog sledge. Inspite of the dogs condition the dog driver continued the tour wihout us and came back 30 minutes later. The two Germans were behind us and their dogs did not want to run eihter. Most probably their dogs also were in an awfaul pain. Despite of this the dog driver continued to whip the dogs. The Germans also stod off their sledge and stopped their tour. At lunch we had met a Danish couple who told us that the dogs already looked worn out and were very tired. All four of us were very badly effected from above mentioned situation. We marked very clearly to the dog sledge drivers that the treatment of the dogs were totally unacceptable. Some of the dogs were in so much pain that they hardly could stand still on theice. We had also booked an over night stay in the camp on the Lyngmark glaicer and so had the Germans, we all felt very bad during the whole stay. Not even the food was nice and not worth the money. This sad situation unfortunately effected the rest of our trip in Greenland.
Next day we went to Lyngmark Tours and contacted Augusta Salling, chief responsible for Lyngmark Tours, and told her about the situation on the glacier. She already new about it. We claimed our money back and an emmidiate change for the dogs. She did not give any money back and it was impossible to discuss the matter with her. Her argument was that it is "working dogs" and that one makes a difference betwene them and family dogs. What was her meaning with that!? Did she mean that "working dogs" are tools without any feelings which are OK to mistreat? Dosen't all living creatures feel pain? Dose she think that we turists want to experience this on our holiday. Lots of tourists preserve nature and animals. We do not want to experience bleeding and mistreated dogs on our holiday........!!!!! Above situation resulted in a verbal conflict with Augusta Salling and we pointed out how unacceptable the situation was for the dogs on the glacier.
The ice is melting and is very wet and sharp.
Many tourists who got to know about this, found it horrible and thanked us for our effort to save the dogs feet. Two men from Austria that were camping close to our youth hostel on Disco Island, came later on to our youth hostel in Ilulissat and thanked us, on the "black board" in the entrance, for all our effort to save the dogs feet and hopefully make a better life for the dogs in the future.
Normally one receive compensation for bad products within most businisses. The same day we left Disco Island we went to Lyngmark Office and asked once again to receive our money back because they had delivered a lousy and depressing product and experience to us which we did not want to pay for. Without any success. We asked Augusta Salling if she was satisfyed with the knowledge that tourists are leaving her island and arrangements on Lyngmark glacier in a sad and disappointed mood. She dit not answer.
Before the boat back to Ilulissat departured, one of the Danish guides from Lyngmark glacier came and told us that four dogs received heeling cream on their paws and rest. All the other dogs received shoes that following day. SHOULDN'T THIS HAVE BEEN A MATTER OF COURSE FROM THE BEGINNING...?
For sure there would have been more dogs who would have needed to heel their paws.
If Lyngmark Tours and the dog drivers think that all tourists are ignorant and callous. By now they have experienced - that this is not the case. People with good hearts dosen't want to be exposed for such situation. It can even destroy a whole vaccation.
Unfortunatly we both have experienced on our trips that many tourists are ignorant without courage to stand up for ones belifes. Therefore such situations can go on. It is us tourists and travelling agencies who has the pover to prevent such situations as above for the coming future.
