Fabulous place to look back at history.
Great place to take the kids.
History is all over this soil.
The great fur trades and miles of portage.

We sometimes stop here when we are walking the Trans Canada trail, first time seeing a wooden wall of the for from the trail was a cool experience because we had no clue it was there. The novelty fades, but it is a cool place to bring visitors if you are close by and want to teach them a little bit about the war of 1812 without driving to Niagara Falls or Nancy Island in Wasaga Beach. Cool thats its free, and easy to check out but not much is there.

We found this place by chance and decided to give it a go! It was very quiet and an enjoyable afternoon for a hike. I've read many of the reviews about how little there is to see here and while I agree it has so much potential for better use of the space but it offers nice leisurely hiking as well as some options to have a picnic!
If you're in the area or planning a stop while driving through, check it out.

I was participating in the re-enactment that took place September 30-October 1, 2016. The site has now been officially declared a heritage site by the provincial government. There was alot of positive feed back about the event.

We found this place was hard to find - the sign is set back from the road & only visible from 1 direction. There were no signs close to the attraction to suggest you were almost there, either. I knew from Trip A. that there wasn't much to see here, but when in Rome, right? Wrong. It's close to nothing else, & a fair drive from Barrie. The fence is new, and there are some new outlines of where they think certain buildings were, & a few plaques. That's all. If you are going to use the park for a hike, sure, take 10 minutes & have a look, but it's not worth a trip for the sake of it alone. Oh - and they want you to PAY to park! $6, and via your phone - except we could get no cell service out there in the boonies. I could see the 'fort' through the trees & knew it would be a short visit, so we did not bother to try & try & try, to get cell service to pay to park there - we went if for 15 min & came out. Waste of time. There is certainly the space to do more with this, & I hope they eventually do.

A nice, quiet place to visit and see some of the local history. The plaque gives you enough information to understand some of the reasons that there would be a fort here during the War of 1812. The partial restoration give a good glimpse of the architecture of the time, and some of the reasons for that style of building.
A nice place for a visit and a picnic, or as the starting point of a long dog walk (on leash, of course) or nature hike. My recommendation would be to visit in the spring or fall, when the mosquitoes aren't so bad, but if you have good bug spray, or aren't bothered by them, go anytime.

I can't really recommend visiting Fort Willow just for its own sake. It's an interesting historic landmark for sure, but quite sparse in terms of things to actually see. Sadly none of the original War of 1812 buildings are still standing. The walls of the fort have been rebuilt and there are also logs marking the outlines of the former buildings. I'd say spend a day exploring the Minesing Wetlands and make this one of several stops along the way.
