Friendly people from beginning to end of the experience. Efficient but above all relaxed and enjoying what they were doing so much, you couldn’t help but enjoy it too.

Great time on steam train in Forest of Dean

Great fun thing to do with 7 year olds. Lovely experience to ride a steam train. Very friendly helpful staff. Kieran who was driving the train was amazing with the kids.

Relaxed trip

We enjoyed a very pleasant round trip on the railway a few days ago. We were very impressed with the entire experience , including our cream tea at the end of the journey. The journey was very relaxing with superb scenery and very helpful staff at every station.

What a rip off

What a waste of time and money compared to the 10 other steam train rides I have had!! 38 pounds for 12 miles!! We spent more time turning the engine around then going down the track!!

Heritage railway visit

We visited Dean Forest Railway as part of a Steam Footplate Experience.. lt was a really enjoyable experience, aided by the helpful volunteer staff.

We would recommend a visit for travel and the free museum

A well run and friendly heritage railway

A well run and friendly heritage railway service running steam and other locomotives. We were hauled by a 2-6-2 ‘Prairie’ loco, I gathered. Short distances between stations and route ends where the engine changes ends, but still a reliably pleasing 90 mins with plenty of photo opportunities (stations and train).

All the staff were friendly and helpful, keen to share knowledge and enthusiasm.

Relaxing Railway Trip

A lovely, relaxing, step back in time couple of hours trip.
It was very popular, well run.
Along the track in the Welsh valley on a steam train. We ordered cream tea as a little extra and that was lovely. You can take your own food. We had our own seats. You just get on and chose. At the station there is a Little cafe, bookshop in an old carriage, museum. Lots of free parking. Fantastic happy volunteer staff.
If you wanted it a bit more peaceful I would maybe go out of the school holidays.

Amazing day out

We loved the noise we heard from the steam engine. Loved the old style carriages; the cream teas were amazing. We all enjoyed the entire experience, even our Labrador.

Fun and interesting family day out.

We had a fabulous day at the Dean Forest Railway - the Afternoon Tea we had booked to have on the train was delicious and very well packed for our journey. All of the staff we spoke to were very friendly and a credit to the DFR. The ladies in the cafe were very accommodating and efficient. Would highly recommend a visit to & a trip on the train.

Lovely friendly enthusiastic and dog friendly

Although there is not miles of track here, the whole place made up for it by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff / volunteers. Everyone was so helpful and friendly even though it was a very wet morning. Make sure you get out at the stations where they turn round, to watch the engine recouple and take on water. There is also a very interesting museum at the main station. Everything is completely dog friendly. Although we just did the one trip, there are 'rover passes' available that allow you to get on and off at different stations if you wanted to explore the area more as well.
