Read about this place here on TripAdvisor and being a bit of a railroad buff I had to go see it. The day we were there the museum was not open. It’s a short hike to the trestle spanning the Rio Grande River. I walked to the middle of the trestle and back. I would say it’s generally pretty dangerous. There is a maybe 14-16” wide “walkway” (with some gaps) missing railroad ties and just in general a lot of places to fall through. You’re looking at a very long fall to the bottom of the gorge so if you are afraid of heights or have poor balance this is not for you. No way I’d take a kid on the trestle. I did a little research on the history. The line operated from the late 1800’s into the 1990s. After an earthquake that damaged the line I get the impression there weren’t enough funds to repair it. The locomotive that sits at the station was built in Berlin Germany.

As others have said, this is worth a visit if you are in the area: a curious place, the museum itself is open only on Sundays, although the outside area for the hike along the old railway lines to the old bridge can probably be done any time.

Authentic abandoned railway station with amazing bridge. Make sure you have a baby carrier (or be prepared to have you baby on your hands) as the way to the bridge is not suitable for young children nor is the bridge itself. The bridge is a hazard in fact. But definitely worth visiting if you have the thing in you for railways!

El día que visité el puente habían dos tipos ingiriendo licor y drogas en una de las bases del puente. Nos dimos cuenta de la situación cuando nos ubicábamos encima de ellos, parados en el puente. Yo me encontraba acompañado de amigos y amigas, y además llevaba un drone. La actitud sospechosa de estas dos personas nos hizo retirarnos de inmediato del lugar, por lo que no pudimos disfrutar del paisaje ni del puente.

This is an easy hike down the old rail road tracks from the Atenas railroad museum. It is a historic bridge that crosses the Rio Grande River and runs along the Hwy 27. Great place to take spectacular photos from but great care must be taken because of many missing railway ties on the bridge. Not recommended for young children or if scared of heights.

Now that the railroad is abandoned, we walked from the museum, down the rails and out to this bridge. Scary high over a gorge. No railing.

Attention, ce spot n'est pas sécurisé, je vous déconseille fortement d'y aller avec des enfants ou après avoir bu l'apéro !!! il ne reste que les ferrailles entrecoupées de vide à plus de 100m de haut, sans rambarde sur les côtés, c'est très impressionnant, on a adoré !! par contre très dur à trouver, seulement le côté en arrivant de San José est accessible mais il faut un 4x4 et être dégourdi pour se repérer par rapport à l'autoroute pas loin...

We had a bit of time while in the area so we thought we would check out the Museo Ferroviario Río Grande de Atenas (if searching for this on Waze, use that title, NOT Puente Ferrocarril Rio Grande) and we were glad we did. The owner did not speak English but we figured it all out as he showed us around the museum with my rudimentary Spanish. It was clear that he was an enthusiast and loved the collection of railway paraphernalia, trinkets and photographs. He showed us into the train engine and pointed us down the tracks to the puente. An hour well spent. Sure, it's no Smithsonian, but there's a little something for everyone. Regarding directions, if Waze is directing you to pay the toll and get on the highway, turn around and take the 3rd right at the roundabout, then left and follow the road around to the right to the end.

We found our way to the museum (take the roundabout and go over the highway, don't get on it). We don't speak any Spanish so it felt a little sketchy at first, but it's ok. Very weird stuff in the museum. We walked out to the bridge but it looked pretty dangerous and we decided not to cross it, so just watch out if you go, think hard before you start across - it looks shaky and since I don't love heights I decided best not to try. Still, it was worth the trip to see it - the whole trip took less than an hour.

Go on the cut off to Hwy. 27, half way around the round about and follow your nose straight ahead to the tiny museum, which is seldom open. See the bridge on the way back, and hike over it, but why? You can see a quick view of it and the canyon from the autopista. Just go slow and look right after the toll plaza, going towards San Jose. Wish they still had a train to Puntarenas. It was narrow gauge and fun. Put out of business by trucks. Someday they may use the route for a new train to the new airport planned for near Orotina.
