We very much enjoyed our visit here. Our guide John was knowledgable and happy to answer our questions. A fascinating place and definitely worth visiting.

There is a nice picnic area and covered parking.
250 NAD per person for the guide seems to be the standard price here. Well, the information was quite interesting.
ATTENTION: A few kilometers before this spot, groups of children try to block the road and make cars stop. Some are so small that you can't see them in front of the car. If you pick up your camera and try to photograph it, they'll run away.

Disappointing given the price of entry. 270Nad per person to see 4 fossilized trees and a 30min visit. Prefer Twifelfontain much more interesting (price also 270Nad)

I only was here because the visit was included as part of the overall group holiday. If checking out places to go myself I never would have picked it.
It is not a forest!
Maybe one day it was, but now it is a few tree trunks lying on the ground.
I felt sorry for the guide as he was so enthusiastic and clearly proud of this area but there was no wow factor for me. I did enjoy seeing the national Welwitschia plant though and hearing a bit about them.
So one star for the guide and one more for the plants but zilch for the trees I'm afraid.

The trees are intereesting and the visit is not a complete waste of time. However, the price is way too high for a 800m hike with a moderately knowledgeable guide who shows you some 4-5 trees lying on the ground (yes, forest is a misnomer). 45 euro for a family of four is a rip-off for such a site.

Small marked circuit which allows us to discover some lying fossilized trees. Not to be confused with Deadvlei, an emblematic site further south. Despite the presence of a guide, no preservation effort is made even the guide stands on the fossilized trees which are gradually disintegrating. Damage !
We were lucky enough to have a little bonus with the presence of a superb pair of hornbills when we arrived in the parking lot.

Hesitant, I went anyway so as not to regret anything. And I have no regrets! Surprisingly, the guide takes you on a small circuit for about 20 minutes, a very simple route and you discover the plant symbol of Namibia, a plant which defies the laws of time but also petrified trees, wood which looks like stone or stone that looks like wood? Both in fact! Great geology lesson.

Site with beautiful and large petrified plants.
Tour with compulsory guide lasting 35 minutes with entrance price of approximately €12.
Pleasant walk.

It is not something special but is interesting and important for understanding Namibia and the petrified trunks are absolutely outstanding.
We just went briefly: got the story, saw and touched the trunk and didn’t need to go and see the other 200 that are around…is 200 million old…even older than me:)

Une excursion sympa et facile à réaliser. Vous y verrez la plante national de Namibie, le welwitschia mirabilis ainsi que d’étrange tronc d’arbre devenu roche au fil des millions d’années. Cette court mais instructif. Nous avons aimé cette excursion.

Bonjour
Nous sommes allés à la Petrified Forest National Heritage Site en voiture normale : il y a un grand parking sur place. Puis la visite se fait à pied avec un guide pour une petite heure de balade. Possibilité de pique-nique sous une toit en chaume sur le parking. Petite buvette également sur place.

Je ne me souviens plus, mais nous avons trouvé l'entrée relativement chère n terme de rapport qualité- prix. Cette appréciation est cependant très subjective pour qui n'a pas un goût prononcé pour les vieilles pierres ..

Please give me an update on road conditions in the area. Can one drive from Khorixas to the forest and rock engravings in a conventional sedan or is a high clearance vehicle essential?

Sorry for late answer, we were just three weeks in South Africa and we had really limited access to internet.
From Khorixas road was rather ok. We had Toyota Fortuner (2wd), but at least then it would have been possible also by Polo/Corolla.
However, road D2612 was very rocky. We saw VW Polo there going - but we would not have driven it.
