We visited the Akrotiri Archaeological Excavation Site in December.

We had a hard time locating the entrance (we went there on our own) as the signage for this place was so small that we missed it the first time.

It was fascinating to see evidence uncovered by the archaeological team, that the Akrotiri site had been occupied by humans as far back as the Neolithic Age (4,500 BC)!

This is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean and Greece.

Akrotiri grew from a small fishing, farming village to an important trading centre. It was a major centre in the trading of copper due to its strategic position between Cyprus and Minoan Crete.

From the pottery, vessels and wall murals we could see that Akrotiri residents enjoyed a high standard of living. Their artistic skills and talents as seen through the vessels were truly impressive. The wall murals depicted nature, religion and gave us a glimpse into their everyday life.

Sadly, a powerful volcanic eruption in 1613 BC and a major earthquake buried the town under volcanic ash. But thankfully the volcanic ash had actually helped preserved the settlement and the many artefacts, which are now being displayed in museums.

The excavation site is like an indoor museum. It is covered with a bio-climatic roof to protect the artefacts from the elements. We walked on timber boardwalks to view the display below us.

It was low season when we were there on a December afternoon. I noticed that there were just two other couples besides us, so the whole place was really quiet and peaceful.

I still could not believe that what we saw were 6,000 years old. 😅

These ruins are covered to help preservation. This was my lesat favourite site in all the sites I have seen in Greece. It felt a little rushed and I like sites that you can explore. I think they are still worth seeing, however, expect to be on a boardwalk with minimual time to view each section with lots of other tour groups herding you along. There is washrooms and a nice little stand that you can buy snacks from.

Pierwsza część ekspozycji to właściwe słabo zachowane resztki budowli, a dopiero druga część wykopalisk zawiera domy z zachowanymi ścianami (nawet do pierwszego piętra) i odtworzonymi drzwiami i oknami.

Visiting Akrotiri was a spontaneous decision while we were visiting Santorini. We were looking for something with historical significance that would allow us to learn a bit more about the area, and this was the perfect place for exactly that. It was so fascinating to see the remains of the ancient settlement, the fact that some of the structures are able to be visualized so well despite the damage and time that has passed. For anyone who has an interest in history, I would definitely recommend setting some time aside to visit.

An enclosed archaeological site gives visitors a glimpse of Minoan life thousands of years ago. It reminded me of Pompeii, as the volcanic ash helped to preserve pottery scattered around the site and paintings, which are still visible across the interior walls. The small bathtub and bed frame give you a clear idea of the size of the average person. It’s worth visiting and wandering around the raised platforms surrounding the site.

I had never seen anything like this. I kind of thought of it as the Pompeii where they all escaped which made it easier to see. This is a town that got covered by a volcanic eruption and later discovered by archaeologists. The site is enclosed by a building. It was just us and a lady taking tickets. The silence and darkish room gave it a bit of reverence Reading the signage gave us some insight. It looks like in the busy season there would be guides that could help bring it all to life. We were disappointed that many of the items listed on the placards were off in museums. Too bad they didn’t have replicas or keep a few more items. I found it interesting that an earthquake struck first and the people had been trying to salvage items from their homes before the volcano erupted. Perhaps that made them take the warning signs all the more seriously. We were glad we wandered through the site and understand a bit more.

Visiting the prehistoric town of Akrotiri as like stepping back in time to a remarkably advanced ancient civilization. The site is beautifully preserved, showcasing intricate frescoes, multi-story buildings, and advanced drainage systems that highlight the ingenuity of the Minoans. Walking through the ancient streets under the protective canopy was both educational and awe-inspiring.

A big thank you to the team maintaining this treasure—it’s an experience I’ll never forget!

One of the best things to do in Santorini.
Just incredible to think that the island had such advanced civilisation 4000 years ago, lots of the artifacts have been removed to the museum in Fira so get the multi venue ticket and go to both.

I really enjoyed this trip, it’s a shame that the site has been stripped of the majority of artefacts, it would have been really good to have seen some in context with the site, however I do appreciate they probably needed conserving. An interesting site and makes me want to visit Pompey.
Is it worth the money?? not convinced but worth a visit.
