I arrived at Oppie Plaas with the intention of grabbing a quick lunch, ticking the box and heading out. However, upon entering Oppie Plaas, I felt things really slow down, and all rush went out the window. Once you’re off the tarred road and at the entrance where Google Maps directs you, the farm styled restaurant is about a further 10 minute drive along a dirt road. The restaurant is an old tobacco processing structure that has been converted into what you see now, and situated on a cattle farm. The interior is decorated with objects brought down from the previous generations of the family of farmers who owned the place, including an old sewing machine, a farmers hat, and an old shovel. The placemats are laminated old newspaper pages, including an article form Huisgenoot from 1942!
The owners, Rykie and Stan are extremely welcoming, and you get the feeling of visiting an old aunt and uncle. They told me stories life on the farm and about the revolution of the farm and restaurant since their family first purchased it in 1920. There’s limited cellphone signal, and no wifi - Rykie says that this is intentional as it encourages visitors to disconnect from their mobile devices and connect with other people.
The food wasn’t disappointing at all - refreshing homemade lemonade, perfect for a warm day, and a Boere Burger and chips - a large beef patty on a panini bun, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and a sweet relish. Prices are pretty decent for the excellent food, service and ambiance.
While you’re at Oppie Plaas, you’re free to wander around outside where a few farm animals (all named) are housed - a few geese, chickens, and a pig. On Saturdays, kids also get to milk a cow. Oppie Plaas is a great way to spend a few hours, get that farm feeling and enjoy some great food and company.

Reading all the reviews I thought this is a must visit. It's not. Nursery is overgrown with very few plants except roses. 1 pig and a few geese is not exciting. Getting chips fried from a frozen packet on a farm is disappointing. Food was okay but not great. Staff is friendly, place is old school farm design which is nice. I just could not see why everyone is raving about this place, it's okay at best. And be warned, hard cash only, there is no card facilities

My wife took the three grandchildren to Oppie Plaas yesterday. The farm features milking cows, a large black pig that used to live in the farm until it got too big. Also chickens and geese. Farm products are sold and there is a nice cafe area where you can get "moer" coffee (Saffers will understand) melk tert etc. A good time was had by all.

Just outside parys, the place is worthe driving out for or stopping at during a road trip. Limited menu but lovingly and well prepared. Prices are very reasonable also.
The farm has a rich history which the owner willingly shares with pride. Friendly and helpful personnal is an added bonus to the experience which leads one to want to come back time and time again.
Atmosphere is top class, quiet farm setting where one can sit and relax as time rushes by. Loved it.

Girovagando nel Vaal siamo finiti in questa fattoria dove è tutto armonico e piacevole, rilassante. I proprietari sono persone molto amichevoli e abbiamo chiacchierato a lungo con loro. Si vede che hanno l'amore per la loro terra e i frutti che offrono sono ottimi. Abbiamo pranzato con una semplice insalata di pollo veramente gustosa e un'ottimo hamburger. Tutto è prodotto da loro ed è squisito. Dobbiamo tornare perché ci hanno detto che la sua Ginger beer è la migliore!

All three of my ‘city’ boys enjoyed this delightful experience of milking a cow.
I would defiantly recommend this to any one! I even had a try!
And while you are there, relax and take it easy in the coffee shop; read the placements made out of 1930’s newspapers with some delightful stories or play a game of uno while waiting for a genuine home made breakfast and some authentic ‘moer koffie’.
We really enjoyed the morning! Thank you!

This little gem is simply great. It has a homely feel, the portions are generous and the hosts are simply amazing. They gave us extra info about the area and even helped change our flat tyre.
We got to even pet some of the farm animals.
Thank you for an amazing experience. I will definitely recommend to Oppie Plaas to anyone who is in the area.

I took my 6 year old son to see the cow milking (9am on Saturdays) and he ended up doing some milking himself and even feeding the cows. Uncle Stan was great in teaching the kids. We rewarded ourselves with some home made ginger beer and freshly baked muffins. Highly recommend to kids of all ages, to get an experience of real farm life.

I am not sure who loves Oppie Plaas more between my toddler and me! My little guy loves being free around the animals... getting to even participate when the cow gets milked. It really is a relaxing place and Reikie and Stan are the kindest, friendliest people!

We just love to visit Oppieplaas for breakfast. The Oupa and Ouma breakfasts are our favourates. Also be sure to try the milktart, a local Boere tart that will steal your heart. eat it cold with fresh coffee. Kiddies can doddle around and see a number of farm animals and there is also a nursery on the premises.
