One of quite a few estates in the area belonging to the Rothschild family.
The house is a sprawling , rambling , gabled affair : half timbered in black & white.
Originally a much smaller hunting lodge , it was acquired by the Rothschild family & has been much added to.
We visited on a lovely Spring afternoon, only intending to tour the gardens.
The approach to the car park runs down a fairly rough track with some pretty savage speed bumps. At one point it is flanked by very impressive , mature Lime trees which , in flower , are highly scented.
At the car park you can view a selection of plants for sale & then either head straight for the house & /or gardens or divert to the cafe & toilets. Warning : no toilets except opposite the cafe.
The lady checking you in at the car park advises that you tour the gardens in clockwise fashion & we found this good advice. Best to arm yourself with the free map.
We enjoyed the gardens very much. The theme is very much contrasting shades of foliage , the many hedges & topiary of golden & Green yew , fresh beech leaves & mature copper beech trees all set off against each other as do the massive , pale green cedars.
There are flowers , some in the Dutch Garden , the Madeira Walk & around the Venus Fountain.
The House sits at the crest of the gardens & commands a fantastic , panoramic view to Dunstable Downs & The Ridgeway. You will not be able to get very near the house from the garden side.
We were not over impressed by The Ascott Circle which sits on the lawn near the Venus Fountain.
It is an artistic creation but to my mind it is an incongruous pile of slate.
Having visited the main gardens you need to proceed to the entrance side of the house to see the quirky Lynn Garden comprising of 2 circular water channels & some miniature mounds reminiscent of micro Silbury Hills .
The adjacent Lily Pond is very attractive with its attendant thatched summerhouse.
It would be good if some of the trees & shrubs were labelled.

We visit here for the show of dafodills early spring, they are the best around, but our visit in June surprised us with the show of foxgloves in the display garden, a real delight. The gardens as always were well manicured and for the first time we went into the house, itself a surprise with the mottos around the ceiling in the library.

Any of the rooms, as each (6) to see, had amazing ceramics , paintings by old masters ( including Stubbs, Hogarth , Reynolds and Rubens) . Chippendale featured alongside Jan Steen. In the process of being professionally upgraded by the new curator. A lovely visit, started with a buggy ride from the car park to the house for us blighted with mobility problems. Timed visits a great idea as this is a small building. Gardens I will see next trip. I am a member of the NT.

An off track NT property that has very limited opening hours. Welcoming staff in the car park, tea room and gardens - fine in good weather but there are only a few tables inside in the team room and nowhere else to shelter if it was rainy.
The gardens are outstanding and well worth the visit on their own - wide gravel paths, great view, beautiful topiary. The sundial is not to be missed.
This visit was totally let down and marred by the house visit. There are only a handful of rooms open, dressed like an art gallery with no information about the building's history or use as a home, and guarded by an officious, obsequious head steward whose job is to deter anyone in the house from possibly enjoying their visit. No bags, no photos, no touching, no making your own way - no fun.
This is an NT property but very much managed in the Rothschild way as is Waddeson. They want people to visit the grounds, the NT to manage the property and to parade as a charitable concern, whilst maintaining the property as a Rothschild house.
I'd go back for the grounds but never to the house again.

The gardens are fantastic, and greatly appreciated the stunning features of the topiary sun dial, magnolia fell and grotto gardens.
Open house is but a token- a few rooms, and limited displays.
More importantly this is the National Trust House at its worst- don’t walk on the grass, don’t bring bags in, don’t have your phone on, don’t take photographs.
I really felt for a visitor who was jumped on by the receptionist for taking out her phone- vocally dressed her down in front of all the other visitors. This receptionist was not a host but a guardian.
Words like welcome, thank you for visiting, enjoy your visit seem NOT to be on the lexicon of this dragon at the front door.

this property has lovely gardens, some of the best under the national trust ownership, but the house is a big big disappoimtment, only open for a short time and not very nice staff,it is really more of an art collection than a home,,it does not give any idea of how the rothschild family live, just some of their collection.i could be wrong but it seems more like the family gave a few rooms to the national trust along with limited art collection so they could live in the rest of the house without paying death duty.

Really beautiful and peaceful gardens, but sadly we were very disappointed to be told picnics can now only be consumed in a little picnic field. A nice enough oblong of grass lined by trees but it’s right next to the main A road. So noise was an issue. Not really the peaceful picnic we’d had planned.
Such a shame as means although we love Ascott, we’ve had to rule it out for any future picnics.

This was the first time we have been to Ascot. A beautiful place. Not crowded and often felt we had the place to ourselves. Lovely gardens to wander through and a small but fascinating house with lovely art and porcelain. We spent 4 gentle hours there. No rushing about but is not that sort of place. Sit and enjoy.

A.ways nice to wander around the grounds of Ascott House. It’s not huge, and even a gentle stroll will get you around in about an hour, but it’s worth stopping occasionally to take in the views, watch the sheep, horses and pheasants, and admire the blossoms which were perfect at this time of year in late April. There’s a lovely small lake there which contained thousands of frogs of all sizes, all doing what frogs do best in the Spring. The fish seemed quite uninterested though. A very nice hour or two out.

Well kept and beautiful gardens. Outdoor tearoom was nice. We had a lovely scone with jam & clotted cream and a lovely hot chocolate. We also had nice ice-cream in tubs when we finished looking round the gardens. The flower pots looked amazing with Tulips and Forget-Me-Nots.
