The museum is a former woollen mill that is still functional. The different machines that turn wool into yarn are spread over several floors and always molt by a paddle wheel. If you are lucky enough to do so with a Guide, he will start the machines and explain how they work. A very interesting visit and a trip to the past!

The Calquières museum is a so-called “living” museum installed in an old building which historically served as a spinning mill. The building is classified as a historic monument.

The advantage of a "living" museum is that it immediately places the visitor in a situation. This is in touch with reality which is not the case with most museums which are empty and dull shells intended solely for the exhibition of works.

Here, we feel that there is a soul or at least that there was a soul, even if over time it dissolved into a form of passivity and perhaps even abandonment.

Here, the building can be visited entirely on three floors. The lower floor is not the least interesting since it locates "the source", the origin of this place and this activity.

This is a real living element that made everything possible: water. If water did not exist and if it did not exist in a living, dynamic, moving, not to say uncontrollable, form, this place, its history, the purpose of the building, none of that would exist.

Here, we realize that energy does not fall from the sky. It results from a transformation process that impacts the entire spectrum of human life.

On each floor, we see the old machines, steel monsters. We observe and even feel the wool at the different stages of its processing. This is the wool of sheep from the surrounding area more than a century ago. Because, in fact, are there still sheep on these livestock lands and what are they used for today? What is their vocation and above all, what is the vocation of those who raise them?

Wool is a noble material, pleasant to look at even when it is not at the final stage of its processing. It is a soft material and even when it is no longer one with the beast from which it emanates, it remains alive.

The higher one goes into the floors of this old spinning mill, the more time has passed, the more history has unfolded, the more the transformation processes have developed and accentuated. The time of human history is short and undergoes continuous acceleration.

Throughout these floors, these rooms, we realize that emerging industrialization leads to social impoverishment: the replacement of men by machines, child labor, the establishment of paces, the ultimate goal of profit and enrichment of merchants.

All this is of crucial interest in understanding the issues, but does the museum succeed in making them heard, in making them understood? And above all, does it allow, beyond the observations, the machines, the reality, to formulate questions, to initiate reflections, to identify perspectives?

Unfortunately, we do not see any reflection, any perspective emerging. The issues are not identified or clarified. The synthesis is not done. The museum simply opens onto reality but this reality is no longer a present. It's a thing of the past.

The audiovisual narratives are not of good quality, both in terms of image and sound.

However, I particularly appreciated the poetic narration on the big screen on the 3rd floor. It is very important to give a literary connotation to the narrative so as not to totally despair visitors at the end of this visit. To make them despair not about the museum but about the current zeitgeist.

The exhibition of painted canvases that follows has for me no connection with the museum. It's off topic.

As for the dynamic cinema offered at the end of the course, it's a disaster. The dialogues are inaudible, the image is blurry and the plot makes no sense, even if we understand that it is linked to the beast of Gévaudan and the activity of the spinning mill. This last part adds nothing to the visit.

It would therefore be necessary to review all the narratives and recreate overall coherence for the museum visit. Questions must be raised to help the visitor understand the issues. A museum cannot only rely on the past and reality.

Otherwise, would he still be "alive"?

So, try to make us truly understand, and above all feel, what the living and what life is.

Interesting discovery of wool manufacturing, with well-made explanatory videos, without being long.
We were immersed in the workshop of yesteryear (still functional during guided tours).
The gentleman who welcomed us was friendly and available for our questions.
Visit that we recommend.

The Filature des Calquières museum is a very lively museum and a throwback to the thread. there are 4 spaces to discover: the wool yarn manufacturing workshop, with its exceptional machines in operation, superb guided tour. The dynamic cinema allowed us to live with Bobine the mare and the coachman Filasse in a very eventful adventure! The exhibition gallery with paintings and the boutique with beautiful quality items.
