I was on a cruise, stopped at Harvest Cay, and many of us got sick after our visit to the Belize Spice Farm. You tour the garden in a wagon. It stops and the guide gathers a bunch of a spice and it is passed by hand to the last person in the back. Some you were told to eat. If in the back, you dig out what all the passengers in front of you dug out. And it is stupid. Not like there is a shortage of spice or fruit. Not like disposable gloves aren't available. What do you expect in a poor country? The Spice Farm has adequate resources. But I expect the cruise companies to demand changes to protect the health of their passengers. Cruise ships that dock in Harvest Cay: You are now on notice.

We visited the farm as part of an NCL excursion. It is a beautiful place and the tour is very informative. It was so fun buying spices from the gift shop to take home.

Guides are so knowledgeable and enjoy answering all our questions. They tell about the country of Belize on the way to the gardens and back. The gardens guides bring you to leaves and flowers to touch and smell as they tell you all about what you see, touch, and smell. Well worth the time.

This was a wonderful shore excursion and trip. Truly beautiful gardens and our guide did a lovely job explaining the various plants. As an avid cook it was fun to see vanilla, ginger, cinnamon and other spices in their natural habitat. Curry leaves were a revelation - so much more fragrant than what I can get locally. Save time to shop the packaged spices - you can carry them back easily and since they are dried or preserved it’s not a customs issue. Plus the way it smells was worth the trip.

We LOVED this excursion. It was from a Norwegian Cruise. Very well organized, we even enjoyed the bus and boat rides to get there. It was a beautiful day, so many flowers and so much green!! The guides were very informative, with the guide on the bus telling us all about Belize, and allowing plenty of time for pictures at the farm. We also tasted locally grown fruit (malay apples?) and saw the national flower (black orchid). After the tractor/wagon tour we went in to their beautiful handcrafted shop where we were able to purchase spices grown on the farm, enjoyed local beverages and had a chance to speak to the craftsman who tend the orchards and create the structures. We saw vanilla beans, cacao, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, and many local fruits (malay apples, bananas, coconut, citrus). This outing was a refreshing break from pools and sand. We were able to see a little of the country outside the cruise line property, and meet some of the locals. This outing is suitable for all ages. There are some stairs to get on the bus and boat, and being that it's Mexico there didn't really seem to be any ramps for wheelchairs. 5 out of 5 stars as the whole day was a feast for the eyes!!!

Our Tour was Ke’Kchi chocolate and culture with a lunch stop at the Spice Farm and Botanical Gardens. It was excellent! Our tour guide Chico did a remarkable job of explaining everything that we were going to do and see on our tour. He even participated in a traditional dance and entertained us the entire time. It was never a dull moment and much appreciated.

Such an experience!!! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and what an amazing day!!!! Really neat to see what cosmetics, perfume and diffent spices and medicines originated

What a great tour, very interesting and informative. And even though we are at the start of the blooming season, the flowers that were blooming were beautiful! Our tour guide Antonio and our driver Rickie were wonderful hosts. They explained all about the herbs and spice and even brought some to the cart for us to smell and taste. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour…very pleased.

An awesome tour where you were able to touch and taste all the spices that they grow! Even great on a rainy day as the teak hand built tour wagon is covered and comfortable. The tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable and fun and had us totally engaged.

Got bit several times at the Spice Farm tour
I got bit by a black flying insect several times. We did bring bug spray with us but I forgot to put some on. We sat in the back of the tractor ride and our daughter who was carrying the bug spray sat in the very front while we went through the tour and I kept feeling something bite my ankles I would look down and see a black flying insect. I tried to shake my legs as to not cause a scene and scream and ruin the tour for everyone but it kept coming back to bite. This ruined the trip for me as all I could focus on was my ankles as if I took my eyes off for a minute and I stopped shaking my legs I would get bit again. Now 2 weeks later I have these swollen bites that are uncontrollably itchy. Can someone tell me what bit me so I can look up how to treat the bites?

Hi
Black little (very tiny) insect may be sand fly mostly seen in sandy beach area. We have Dr flies (like horse fly in US) not too much sand fly. It is seasonal.
I think a mild hydrocortisone cream (0.25 %) may help.
If infected ,may need antibiotics. Sorry this happened .How can I make it up to you

We are considering this tour in April - part of the NCL Ship. I read that the tour includes a lot of walking and stairs. Are the 100 steps that the fine print mentions all at once ? We are a group of 4 and one of the ladies has not great knees. Just want to know exactly how much climbing is needed etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
