The Heritage Centre is in the splendid old Post office building next to Marshall’s Yard. I’ve gone past many times but this was the first time I’d been in. It was a very well worth while visit and there was almost too much to take in on a single visit. I will need to go back!
The exhibits are on three floors with the ground floor covering the industrial history of the area. Gainsborough now has the feel of a small rural town but 100 years ago it was a major industrial centre.
Marshalls, adjacent to the Heritage Centre, was famous for producing agricultural machinery and particularly tractors. During WW1 it produced aircraft and munitions. Now all that is left of the massive works are photos and the wall in front of the Marshall’s yard retail park. The Centre has a massive archive of plans of tractors etc once made by Marshall’s and regularly gets requests from across the world for copies of blueprints by people wanting to restore them.
There was also the wonderfully named Folding Box Company - one of the founders of the packing industry. Cardboard was sent by barge from Hull to be turned into boxes for Robin’s starch once a household necessity. again during WW2, most of its production went into RAF fighters and bomber and the company received a special award by the Patents Department of the Air Ministry. Later it produced waxed cardboard cartons for ice creams, producing between 15-20 million in the 1960s. Now it is just a memory.
The first floor has a reconstructed post office (complete with telephone exchange) as well as period shops and a 1940/50s house.
The top floor is the archives, with shelves of files with information about local companies as well as newspapers, pictures and maps.
There is a small cafe on the ground floor selling very good home made cakes. There is a small shop which has a good selection of books about Gainsborough and the local area.
Staff are friendly and delighted to answer questions and talk about the exhibits. don’t walk past next time, but do go in and find out what is behind the doors.

This museum is on 3 floors.The history of the town and it's industry from the sixteenth century are featured.Recreation of a fifties room is interesting.

I have driven through Gainsborough for work for years and must have been passed the museum 1000s of times, when I finally went in for a visit I very impressed with the range of items on show. I particularly enjoyed the access to the archive where we could look up history of the schools, surrounding villages and weather. The staff were really friendly and enthusiastic about the museum and its contents.

I dropped in on the advice of my family. I had spent the last three years of my school ing in Gainsborough before joining the Navy in 1978. We visit town to see family two or three times a year. The centre was worth every penny of the three pound entrance, just to research everything from industry, shops, war heroes, schools and ancient history. The old photos are lovely though I didn't recognise anyone I knew. FortunatelyI met Rosemarie the head archivist and we spent nearly an hour talking about all sorts, just the past really. I am Sad that the town has been ruined by the Marshalls Yard complex ( A political decision decades ago!), however it was fantastic as Rosemarie filled the gaps in my knowledge. I will return again with some targeted specific questions to enrich my knowledge now I can spare some time.

My partner's sister, who teaches in Gainsborough, wanted to visit the centre, which is based in the old telephone exchange, with a view to taking a school party. We popped in on Saturday morning, and had a cheap and cheerful cuppa in the delightful little 'Exchange Tea Room' - free biscuits! - before exploring further. Staffed by charming and knowledgeable volunteers, this turned out to be an unexpected treasure trove of local history. They have three storeys of displays, artefacts and information, including a street scene. On the top floor you can see what was once a flat for the security guard, and still contains its original fireplace with cooking range. Gainsborough was once an important port, and later an equally important manufacturing centre - so the contents of this building are a fantastic resource for anyone wishing to delve into these areas of history; or to research their family history, as the archive includes the records of hundreds of people who were employed by the big companies in the past. I have no local links, but I found it a fascinating and delightful way to spend the morning, and have no doubt we will return.

Visited today, it was a great and unique heritage centre. Alot of interesting things to look at and read. If you want a good overview of the areas history, this is a good place to visit.

This is well worth a visit. Council are not doing enough to promote and support this treasure trove of Gainsborough history. The museum is staffed by very friendly volunteers and we had such an enjoyable afternoon. Upstairs has recreations of old shops and rooms and makes you feel like you have gone back in time for a while. Highly recommended.

3 floors of interesting Heritage. Amazing if you are tracing your family history the top floor is given over to local archives including newspaper articles and photographs. Stop for a drink and a slice of home made cake at very reasonable prices.
