Located in the main fort on the Southern Kaholmen islet, this tiny museum requires no admission fee. It has two main portions: a section containing the history of the fort and the sinking of the German heavy cruiser Blucher, and one covering the various types of artillery used on the island. I visited immediately after disembarking on the island. The first portion of the museum covers the beginning of the fort from the 1800’s with mostly static displays, then segues into a significant portion about the Battle of Drobak Sound. Ericksen’s decision to attack (and surrender) is reviewed in detail, including the controversies surrounding it.. The second portion of the museum consists of various artillery pieces (real or models) that have been used on the fort over the years, from the 1800's into the late 20th century.
Overall this was a bit of a niche museum, with my main concern being that most descriptions were in Norwegian and therefore difficult to interpret. There was an audioguide accessible through my cell phone with translations but the coverage was fairly spotty. The Battle of Drobak Sound was clearly the main focus here and the offerings did delve into a little more detail than previous museums, although again the main movie describing this did not contain English subtitles.
A recommended “quick stop” for most visitors, although one certainly can’t argue with the price of admission.

Fint å gå rundt «midt i historien»,. Fint område midt i Oslofjorden med muligheter for piknik eller sitte på restaurant. Litt utfordrende å finne parkering når man skal ta fergen.

See the movie "The Kings choice" or in Norwegian / Danish "Kongens Nei/nej" and you will know the story from the 9th of april 1940, when the fortress sunk the big german cruiser "Blücher" with the fortresses ancient guns and torpedoes. So interesting

It is recommended to book a separate guide that can tell vividly about Oscarsborg - we had that. We had an amazing guide who knew Oscarsborg's history. It was fun to find that our Canadian guests were just as happy as us. They said that they did not know anything about the war in Norway before the visit.

Drøbak was an easy and affordable day trip from Oslo by bus and Oscarsborg was an interesting and historical museum to visit while there. You need to purchase tickets at the landing where you access the ferry which is well marked and right on the water. It is approximately a ten minute boat ride. If you want to wander the grounds like I did there was no fee. If you want to view the torpedo bay you must be on a tour. I wasn’t able to take a tour but wandering was enough for my imagination and interest. The cannons and bunkers are explorable and captivated my imagination. The actual Fort is in fantastic shape and has been converted into a museum. Even though the text explaining the exhibits is only in Norwegian there is a free app that has several language options. You can still see where the Fort came under attack in WWII and the stone walls still show the ‘scars’ of battle. A very short bridge connects the two islands Oscarsborg is located on and the secondary island has a marina and restaurant.

Hyggelig å ta båten ut for både store og små.
God mat. Fine områder hvor barna kan løpe fritt. Ingen biler.

Litt mangelfull skilting. Båttidene til Drøbak, sto ikke ved billettautomaten. Flott museum med mye å se. Vandring inni festningen. Bruk guidemuligheten.
