The Polygon wood cemetery is a peaceful place were the fallen soldiers have been laid to rest. Pay your respects and be grateful that they gave their lives for us. There is free parking in a car park before the cemetery.

Here you will find 2 beautiful cemeteries, a tranquil wood with well-kept pathways, a park of peace and various memorials to the intense fighting that raged here throughout WW1. The wood changed hands a number of times, and had literally ceased to exist by the war's end. The main 'Buttes New British' cemetery is filled with war dead who were recovered from the adjacent fields after the war, hence the large proportion of unknown graves. The nearby smaller Polygon Wood cemetery has original burials, hence the more irregular layout (burying the dead quickly under fire) - if you visit this smaller place you will be rewarded by a warm welcome from Tommeke the friendly neighbouring donkey! Polygon Wood is one of my favourite places to visit, not least as my great great uncle fell here and has no known grave.

A nice area to spend some time. You can walk the wood within 1.5 hours but also spend some time on the WW1 Cemetary. Along the way there are information signs about the war. Also some remains of bunkers or shelters are visible. The cemetary is impressive.

Verrassend mooie begraafplaats.

Mooie ingedeelde W.O. I begraafplaats.

There are still trees in Polygon Wood, unlike many of the old battlegrounds around Ypres. You first glimpse the big memorial through the cluster of trees, and can get a realistic impression of what it was like for soldiers taking cover there from enemy fire. Atmospheric

We were over in Belgium for our annual geocaching remembrance event at Polygon Wood, and The Black Watch Memorial
These are such lovely peaceful places, well worth a visit if you’ve never been.
We were also there because we support the Brothers in Arms Charity in nearby Zonnebeke.
We are raising money to build a lasting memorial to 2 Australian brothers that served here in WW1, one was killed and buried here but his body was never recovered until found nearly 100 years later in 2013 by a local farmer digging footings for a new building. The grave site was not marked on any maps. There where 6 bodies in total but this one sparked interest as to why it was wrapped in blankets and facing in a different way to the other 5. On research it was found out that he was one of two brothers, the surviving brother had buried his sibling in such a way that he would recognise him when he came back to collect him after the war was over.
On return to Belgium the grave site could not be found.
Unfortunately the surviving brother did not see his brothers body being recovered in 2013, because he had passed away a few years earlier.
The story that was narrated by the surviving brothers family inspired the farmer so much that he set up this charity and donated a piece of his land so he could create a lasting memorial to the brothers. The brothers family have been involved and have visited the site a number of times.
Our geocaching group got involved a couple of years later and have been raising money since. The memorial is half built and is waiting for the bronze statue of the 2 brothers to be completed and delivered to site.
The charity is based at the local cafe/pub called the Dereve, where there is also a small museum dedicated to the brothers.
My wife and I just love visiting Belgium and go there as many times as we can.

Graag had ik geweten waar de naam Polygon eigenlijk vandaan komt.
Is dit de naam van de streek of persoon of ... ?

Hello,
You seem to be quite the expert.
I am doing a research project on The Battle of Polygon Wood in school.
To make my poster even better, im trying to find some very interesting things - such as "the flamethrower was introduced"
If you could please provide me with some more, that would be wonderful.
Thank you very much.

Directions above are good ... I recommend purchase of Michellin's Book of maps of the Western Front especially if you are visiting other parts in France ... also Major and Mr's Holt's various maps of the different areas are good.
