The huts and staff are amazing but the track is diabolically muddy. It is being upgraded so perhaps in two years and during dry weather it will be fantastic. Beautiful bush and beach walks. Just very very muddy!

There were so many moments on this walk when I was stunned by the glory and beauty of the bush and landscapes. There is so much variety in what you see from moment to moment. I walked as a solo tramper and enjoyed every second.
The facilities at the huts were such a treat. Hot showers and a fluffy warm duvet = perfection! And hot bangers and mash with a Guinness each night for tea. Delicious creamy hot porridge each morning. I was lucky enough to not have to share my 8 bunk room with anyone on the first night so slept very soundly. And only one other person on the second night.
I spent quite a bit of time up on the hill above Okaka Hut looking for the southern lights aurora borealis but was not lucky enough to see them. The stunning sun rise the next morning made up for it though.
Swimming at the beach was fantastic at the end of day 2. Cold but nice once I got used to it. The dolphins were there but sadly quite far out from the beach. Do not hang about getting into the water. The sandflies are ferocious!
Towards the end of day 2 the track gets really, really muddy. Ankle deep sludge for up to 50 metres long. It is far easier to go through it than to muck about trying to go around. Use walking poles to get you through. Also regarding walking poles, the track can be a bit narrow on day 2 making it hard to use the poles effectively.
Best thing about the trip - the fantastic scenery, the facilities and the people you meet. There’s also loads of pest control so lots of native bird life compared to other walks I’ve done such as the Kepler. There was also loads of pig and deer sign.
Suggestion for improvement - more clearly signed toilet facilities along the way.
Things to think about - the days are long and reasonably hard. You should be quite fit and physically able. You will enjoy it much more if you are fit and strong.
Distance - My phone Strava recorded day 1 and day 3 at 28kms each. There will be a percentage error given how inaccurate phone gps can be, but it didn’t feel like too much less than that.
Food - you can buy food for the next day or for dinner at night at the hut (as long as you’re there when the shop is open - for a bit after 5pm ish, and a bit from after the 7pm hut talk to around 8pm ish). So you can get away with carrying only emergency supplies and snacks on the walk and so have a lighter pack.
Water - do not stint on water! You need the full 2L or more when starting out. Then top up again at the water bridge. Every one of the people I ended up spending the most time with ran out on the way up on day 1.
The track - the track is super clearly marked and easy to follow. There are extensive sections that are board walked.
Top tips - Go slow, take some photos and enjoy the walk. Also, get your pack flown up to the first hut. $150 but by the time you’re halfway up the hill, even $500 starts sounding extremely reasonable. :p

Hump Ridge Track (April 2022 - review)
I would like to share my experience with booking the Hump Ridge track last year in March/April 2022.
When I enquired about the track at the end of March 2022, the price for the bed was $295. I had to arrange leave from work to get the days off, so I picked the days in April 2022, as the track was closed from 25th April 2022 for maintenance.
In the meantime the Hump Ridge track webpage was upgraded and showed as Season 22/23 with the price $345, which obviously was not yet, as Season 22/23 stars after the maintenance break. I spoke with Mr. Cedric, which was not pleasant at all to deal with.
When I enquired about price difference, Mr. Cedric said that its already $345 (for multi-shared 8 beds) and "Thats the last spot. Leave it or take it"
When I arrived to Information Centre in Tuatapere, Mr. Cedric informed me that the last spot is in quad room, so its another $50, so I had to pay at the end $395 a considerable increase from the advertised price of $299.
Dont get me wrong, the hike is beautiful and I would like to thank Tuatapere's Community and volunteers who take good care of the track, but the price is way too expensive and unfair explanation regarding the price increase.
And at the end - I slept in the room with another 3 people, but there were other mattresses, so the room could accomodate up to 8 people.
I dont think this is a good behavior from the Community.

But the track is amazing, beautiful. Nature is so powerful and kind. ❤️

Our family did this walk in Dec 2022 and we had a great time. Our kids were 5 and 7. We chose this walk because the DOC walks were booked out. Also, for some DOC walks kids are not allowed.

I think all the reviews give a pretty good insight. I did regret not having hiking poles. I have never missed having them in other hikes, but here they would be very useful on the Day 1 climbs and especially the Day 2 descent.

We tried to pack as light as possible. We hired sleeping bags. The huts were well stocked, and we bought dehydrated meals there to eat for lunch on Day 2 and Day 3. We carried a small power bank but this was unnecessary - the staff will let you use the power in the communal huts. We carried a lot of cold and wet weather gear we were lucky enough not to need.

The track is poorly marked in terms of distances elapsed/to go. From other reviews, this can be demoralising. I had a basic gps watch with the routes and a few waypoints pre-loaded, so it was fine.

This is quite a physical hike. Yes, a preschooler with 2kg pack can do it. But kids are light, agile, resistant to injury and rapidly recover from fatigue - during the day and between days. There is plenty of daylight and we spent 9-10 hours on the trail each day, taking our time with steep sections, and a reasonable number of breaks.

On our trip, most walkers smashed it but we also saw plenty struggling and a few didn't make it. I don't know if this is a typical rate of attrition for Hump Ridge, but I thought it was quite severe, in a group of self-selected hiking people.

This was our second multiday hut walk, the other being the Three Capes in Tasmania. Hump Ridge is a much greater physical challenge. Three Capes is of course resourced at a much higher level, but is in any case a superior experience in terms of variety of landscape, wow factor views, cultural content, all-year walkability and wildlife. In terms of international visitors, Hump Ridge seems more popular. Maybe this is because of NZ's well-developed hiking culture and infrastructure and superb international reputation?

Hump Ridge is hard enough to give you a great sense of achievement, and it rewards you with some pretty magical forest experiences and amazing views. Hut life is clean, comfortable and friendly. It all felt very safe and supported. There is mobile coverage in most parts of the walk. For our young family, it turned out to be a great experience. We are definitely keen to come back to NZ and try a DOC great walk next.

We have mixed feelings about this tramp. We were fortunate to have gorgeous weather on day 1 and it was the best day. A real range of vegetation, incredible views. The last 1 to 1.5 hours before you get to Stag Point are very steep and it's a big day. We were well warned and had trained for it so no complaints about that. Great hut at the top, great staff and we love the boardwalk circuit. We booked a private room, super comfortable and big bed, a real treat.
Day 2 was fine weather again and we enjoyed the first couple of hours along the Ridgelines, mostly boardwalks and great views. I didn't particularly enjoy the rest of day two. Long patches of the track are in very poor condition, very muddy and tree rooty, you need to carefully watch every single step and its also damaging the bush as people seek other routes to avoid the mud. I really hope DoC can fix that mess, as they have started to already.
Staff at second hut were disinterested though the place was clean and tidy and comfortable. I was astounded when at the evening briefing, someone asked about the weather forecast and the staff just said oh we don't know. Such a fundamentally important piece of information for any tramping trip. Fortunately there is mobile reception so we could check ourselves. Also a USB charging point at the Port Craig lodge which is great.

The Hump Ridge Track definitely exceeded all expectations. Having done both the Routeburn and Milford tracks, I didn't expect this trail to live up to the same expectations but it sure did. Magnificent scenery, goblin like forests, spectacular views from Okaka Lodge to the ocean, swing bridges, viaducts and Port Craig, steeped in history from a Rimu milling operation and where one can swim with the rare Hector's dolphins. The helicopter flight of Te Waewae Bay was a great start. Lodges were very comfortable and the staff fantastic. Great to do this hike with a guide as there's so much history to absorb. Congratulations to the Hump Ridge Trust who got this track initiated and maintained. Don't hesitate, just book it.

Due to poor weather conditions this experience wasn’t as good as it could have been for us. We are aware that the weather played a major part in our disappointment of this walk. It rained the first two days and the heli couldn’t get up too drop our bags off the first day. There were no views what so ever at the top.
Day one is a good long walk. We saw dolphins swimming along the way. The final hour or two is difficult but manageable. This day took us 7 hours and we have a medium level of fitness.
Day two I found more difficult on the knees with all the downhill and stairs. This day took us 7 1/2 hours.
Day three I woke with sore legs, the remaining walk was long but it was nice to walk along the beach towards the end. This day took 6 1/2 hours.
The views and forest along the way were great and the lodges comfortable. The track gets very muddy and boggy in parts. Also there is alot of stairs and boardwalks.
Poles are a must.
We enjoyed the experience but felt with the weather we slogged it up there and back down again for no benefit (experience aside).
The staff are fantastic all the way along. Very friendly and knowledgeable of the area.
I would have liked to have been told the heli possibly wouldn’t get up there as it was only a couple hours after we left it was meant to fly.….(I’m aware that I should have prepared better for this). Transport to and from Queenstown was abit mishmash and we had to get a ride to one place and then another would pick us up then we stopped to changed drivers etc, no one’s fault but if I went again I would take my own transport or fly in to Invercargill and get picked up from there as it is only an hours drive. It took four hours from Tuatapere to Queenstown on the return trip and when you are tired and abit over it this is a long drive.

Amazing walk with beautiful bush and views. The private rooms at the lodges were such a luxury and it was a lovely bonus to be able to buy a wine at night and to have porridge cooked for us in the morning! Our lodge manager was awesome.

I would recommend the guided experience on the Humpridge track without reservation. The walk is outstanding. The guides (Yohan and Catherine) were great and the accomodation and food at the lodges exemplary!!
