Humpridge track - a must do!
2021年11月 • 独自旅游
Just returned from 3 glorious days on the Humpridge. Fabulous guide Yoann and 4 new friends made for the perfect hiking experience.
Lodges were fabulous as were the beds, food and hospitality.
Thank you all.

Beautiful track

All the staff we encountered were very welcoming and friendly - especially Dee who gave us such a warm welcome and you could see her passion for protecting the native species. Beautiful track which was varied, muddy in parts and a bit too long for us! But bar and shower was great, and stellar views!

Spectacular Remote Fiordland track
2021年3月
I walked the Humpridge track solo from the 28th March. I was impressed with the communication and ease of booking and getting additional information and really amazed at the undertaking and quality of the track that allows access to such a spectacular remote part of Fiordland. A huge thank you to all involved in the Humpridge !!
It was a truly fantastic 4 day experience for me. Cedric organised for me to be collected by shuttle from Te Anau at 6am so that I could make an early start on the first day which is a long walk and steady climb. Amazing kms of boardwalks through beautiful mature forest. I then spent 2 nights at Okaka lodge and upgraded to my own room which was a welcome contrast to sharing with 8 others in a bunk room. Having attained the high elevation and awesome views I wanted to be sure to enjoy being there & especially experience 2 sunsets and dawns. Vast numbers of photos were taken! I loved having the comfort of the lodge (it is in a spectacular location) to myself for most of the second day and enjoyed talking to the lodge managers and pest control manager about her trapping programme. The third day I spent descending to Point Craig. I loved that a lot of the track was along a high elevation ridge then entering a "goblin forest" of awesome mossy trees. There were also many hours of squelchy muddy strides but I expected this and had good gear which is essential- boots, gaiters & poles. This was a long day for me and I was last to make the lodge at sunset but that was because I lingered on the initial spectacular elevated section which I don’t regret. My 4th day was a walk out -again through wonderful forest and a lot of rimu trees and then along the wild coast by beach. I had intended to meet up with Wairaurahiri jetboats for an awesome looking expedition up the river of the same name. However, Johan had to cancel the trip because of unseasonal low water levels in the river…I will definitely return another time!

This trip was amazing and accommodates all ages and fitness levels....plus the stunning views.Be aware it is a tramp and not a walk..quite different terrain and track quality. We chose to do this tramp with the guided option. The company were very organised and provided excellent assnistance especially when my husband could not manage the day 2 track..quick call and along came a helicopter to transport him to the 2nd lodge. I highly recommend this trip...especially when you can have the confidence of knowing this company will support your decisions and make them happen. Excellent lodges with great meals provided each day. Lots of history in the Port Craig area atound the lodge.Thank you to the team that looked after us so well.

Stunning scenery

What a great hike. Great scenery and history supported by staff on the track eager to please.
This is not an easy hike but the rewards are worth it. A bonus was the ability to have sheets in bunk (no sleeping bag to carry), food available at hut including Tuatapere sausages! (Again less weight).
Mostly very good track but a bit of mud.
A step above what you find at a typical NZ DoC hut. Book it!

Challenging, tough and incredibly rewarding
2020年11月
We did our research first so knew exactly what we were in for and it didnt disappoint. We knew it was challenging, and we were prepared and did lots of mountain walks. The scenery was stunning - beach, goblin forest, copper coloured plants on the ridges and the stunning lookout. Then viaducts, beaches and coast.
Loved having the comfortable beds with linen and a hot shower. Porridge in the morning was great (although an early sitting is needed for the slower walkers).

the “hut” shop was a great idea. The huts were very comfortable.

Our biggest complaint is that we arrived back at the finish for our pickup at the designated time 2.30pm. But three of us were cold and wet and hungry and had to wait another 3 hours waiting for two people who didnt meet the pickup time. These two people were slow walkers and hadnt even left the last hut when we did (fast fit walkers).
we should not have to wait and be penalised for walkers not even attempting to get to the pickup on time.
Seriously, if you are unfit, cant walk uphill for 5 hours or afraid of heights - you should not do this walk. its a wlk for those who want a challenge and prepared for it.

My suggestion is to take your own vehicle to start finishnpoint (we wish we did).

Stunning scenery, challenging walking
2021年3月
Seven women friends walked the Humpridge Track in March 2021. It was stunningly beautiful with long but managable days. Very lucky with the weather, we had beautiful views and it seemed we could almost see forever. The bush is extremely lush, I've never seen moss like it and I live on the West Coast of New Zealand.
The lodges were spotless, kitchens well stocked, tables and chairs were comfortable. The lodge managers and other trampers were very friendly.
Our group opted for the prime package with packs flown up to Okaka Lodge, sheets and towels on our bunk beds, hot showers included and also a freeze dried meal of our choice.
The beds were super comfortable but the only photo of accommodation on the website is of a queen sized bed in a private room. It does say shared accommodation but a queen sized bed is usually shared. The actual accommodation was excellent, miles better than the usual DOC sardine layout. The track managers should be proud of them and put photos of the bunkrooms on the website.
All in all I loved the walk and would do it again.

Guided Walk Option
2021年2月
I have deliberately offered the package option as my heading to emphasise one of the great strengths of this operation is there are several levels of entry unlike other Great Walks (which this is going to become). which offer a single standard.

The tramp of course is the same for everybody and the first day was wonderful. A quick hop across the bay by helicopter, then a walk along a polite coast track before you take the route up to the Okaka Lodge. This was my favourite part of the track with
a steady climb up to a breath taking vantage point. This part of New Zealand really is so unspoilt.

The Lodge has one of the best positions I have visited with outstanding views to the surrounding countryside and sea.

Great food, a warm shower and we had agreed to approach the summit for the sunset, the views, the atmosphere was breath taking and takes in some of the most uninhabited terrain of the South Island.

Naturally having reached the top we had to make our way to the Coast passing down into the tree line with the classic changes of vegetation before reaching the dense New Zealand Beach Forest at the floor. On the way down one can stop and watch the ever changing cloud formations and take in the coast. Certain sections are a bit sticky which is fine for the experienced tramper but saps the energy of the more itinerant client.

Just after you have met the old coastal rail track is a lunch stop where one does appreciate someone else making a cup of tea!

Port Craig is reached after a 'slog' along the track and the layout of the Cabins some how echo's the earlier settlers. After your feet have expanded over the previous hours its wonderful to be by the sea and swim!

Once again the team work hard to offer an interesting food offering for supper and deliver in spades.

On the final morning the Dolphins were frisking in the bay as Dawn came up and this third day capped a wonderful three days of perfect weather.

The walk out is on a well defined track and you meet your start point and most exciting of all like the Able Tasman walk along Beaches where I was lucky enough to catch the Dolphins 'Surfing." This is the point when you cross over with the Freedom Walkers who are just coming into the track for their turn. Another advantage of the track is the low numbers.

You wind your way up the cliff side some more easy terrain through the Forest and back to the Car Park and a warm welcome at the offices in Tuatepere.

I really enjoyed the quality of the food and Leon and Matt the Guides where fantastic company in their own very different ways but on reflection as I said to the co ordinator Cedric next time I would opt for the Prime Choice which more accurately reflects my own tramping style.

Note

One matter this tramp raised for the second time on a Guided Walk is the issue of diet. Twice now I have been in the compmany of people who request a specialist diet and in neither case, by their own admission was it based on a medical need. I too have a lifestyle diet but on these walks I go with the flow.

Given the back ground and the emergence of more 'work safe' protocols I would encourage these operations to only pursue these alternatives for people where it is a genuine proven medical need and where strict adherance is important to their medical safety. On the final night the entire meal was dominated by one person questioning each alternative offered and when the chef pointed at the dangers of getting it wrong was told that the choice was not a matter of health.

As I said to the person it is profoundly uninteresting to the rest of the party and an unwelcome distraction from why we are there...to have an adventure. It is also not fair on those whose need is real and serious because it devalues the message by insisting on a back country walk where services are helicoptered in something which is merely a preference rather than a crucial need.

Off The Beaten Track
2021年1月 • 家庭
We walked the three day two night walk as a family with three kids 15, 13 and 10. It was a challenging walk due to the mud, the gradient and the 24km of day two.

The huts were fantastic as were the staff who worked there. They warmed us up and made us feel welcome.

The weather did not permit many of the fine views but when we did see from some of the vantage points they were magnificent. The beach at Port Craig allowed us to see Hectors Dolphins and the walk on the final day is a little more forgiving.

It was a concern that the mud and challenging nature of the track was damaging the bush, I hope DOC can improve this.

Freedom walk Humpridge Track

Magical moments for life on this track. However don’t be fooled, it is harder than say most great walks as a comparison. Days are long. We took 6 hours each day and were the first to arrive despite leaving later than most trampers. If you don’t mind big days it is INCREDIBLE!!!!
