2nd visit for us…Cool Grist Mill
2021年9月 • 夫妻情侣
We were here a number of years ago. From Cherokee you have to drive 20 + miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway to visit this Mill. No tours inside to see it operating I’m sure from Covid…Call ahead

Mountain Masks

We AlWAYS visit when we pass through to Cherokee Village. This time my family and I took my father who loves history/museums. He enjoyed checking out the farm. Unfortunately, it seems the farm has been neglected.....and It would of been nice to visit the "inside" displays on the grounds, but there is law enforcement at the door with a giant box of masks....did NOT make any sense 🤷🏻‍♀️ so we left, and never went in.

Not certain why this is an attraction

These are the remnants of an old house. You can see stuff like that all over US. Since this one is in National Park it was made into an attraction. Seriously there are better ways to spend time in national park.

Mill Days
2021年5月 • 好友
The favorite part of going to Mingus Mill was the scenery. Seeing the water separated from the creek to run the stones. The construction of the of the logs, just sends you back to how it used to be done in the old days. The gentleman that was there that day was very knowledgeable about the mill. They actually sell “meal” ground there at the mill. It is a nice little hike back to the mill. There is a nice trail that goes further back, but not sure how far back it goes.

Winter wonderland
We came here not knowing there was still snow on the ground. It was so incredibly beautiful and peaceful. It was truly magical.

Mingus Mill, Historical Experience
Mingus Mill is an interesting attraction with definite signs along the New Found Gap Road on the way to Cherokee. The inside of the mill was closed due to Covid, but there was an elderly gentleman inside with his guitar who allowed people to peer through the top of the open doorway. The man regretfully said they weren't allowing indoor tours and kept strumming on his instrument. I was hoping he would play a real tune and sing something, but he never did. He did talk and give us information on the mill and answer questions we had. Then we walked along outside and saw the water flowing through the troughs that run to the mill. This mill is not operated by a wheel, but by a turbine, which we explored by looking and walking underneath the building supported by stilts. Under normal circumstances, this is a working mill and it is historically authentic to the park. In the nearby visitor center at the farm museum, you can buy products made from the mill.

Nice Stop When Leaving Cherokee
We were there as it opened one morning. It was an easy walk to get to the mill, and such a nice, quiet setting. I enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, and the demonstrations were not quite ready to start.

Restored historic place
It is a great place to stop after a road trip down the NewFound Gap road. When you get down to the area near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, an immediate sign to the right to get you there (about 3 minutes to the visitor center). Great stop with nice clean rest room, a restored corn mill, nice path along the stream (that supplies water to the mill), and a ranger (in the building) who is very knowledgeable about the history and the function of the Mill.

Great History
My hubby and I stopped by here and were disappointed we could not enter due to covid19 but the operator was very sweet and told us the whole story behind the mill and how the feed the livestock at the visitor center in the summer, etc. He was very knowledgeable and informative, enjoyed it a lot.

Overlooked Gem in the Smokies!
Mingus Mill is a great old working mill that is fairly easy to get to as long as you are able bodied. The stream and rich water are peaceful, the current flowers in bloom are very beautiful, and the mill is a great stop in the smokies.
