Stumbled upon this beautiful 19th Century home and gardens whilst driving around the Rose Bay/Vaucluse area during a recent Sydney stay. We were very impressed with the architecture and how well the home, interiors and outer buildings have been preserved, and we thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the expansive grounds. Staff on site are friendly, engaging and full of enthusiasm to share historical insights to this wonderful homestead and its line of inhabitants. The bonus is that it is free to enter the home, and roam freely throughout at your leisure. Wed to Sundays only.
A definite 'must do' when in Sydney and if time permits, enjoy a meal or tea at the cafe.

A colonial period mansion which is one of Australia's most interesting historic buildings. It was the residence of a statesman son of a convict, Charles Wentworth, born in 1790, who, among other things, co-founded the first independent newspaper of the new colony, The Australian, in 1824 and was at the origin of the Australian Constitution. He lived in this house from 1828 to 1862 and its history is fascinating.

Visited on Friday 26th May. My first visit here was over 50 years ago and doubt much has changed in that time. Of course, it has, it is being lovingly looked after for all to enjoy. The free audio tour is worth doing, allowing you to move around at your own place.

Beautiful gardens and lovely old building but note the opening times are not as stated on Trip Advisor. We called today, Wednesday, only to find the house is only open Thursday to Sunday which left us disappointed after travelling there especially to see inside. We nevertheless enjoyed coffee and cake in the delightful Tearoom.

Vaucluse House and its delightful gardens offer an interesting glimpse into the history of early Sydney and the life and times of one of our earliest and master important colonial statesmen, William Charles Wentworth, and his family. Entry is free, the house is beautifully maintained and well presented and there is a very interesting and comprehensive audio tour available. Access is easy, with buses from the city, Rose Bay and Watsons Bay stopping at the door.

We decided to go to Vaucluse House for the day. Caught a ferry from Rydalmere to Circular Quay had a coffee at Rossini before catching the ferry to Watsons Bay then a bus to Vaucluse House. The house has a lot of bed rooms all upstairs.
There is a tea room but we didn’t eat there.
There is a vegetable garden and stables.
Also has a stream flowing through the grounds.
We caught the bus back to Watsons Bay and had take away seafood basket from Doyles.

A great historical experience. Seeing how the 'wealthy' lived in the 1800's.
The person on the reception was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful.

A window into life in the early part of Australian history. This marvellous house is set in beautiful gardens and is a peaceful haven in busy Sydney. The story of the Wentworth family is one of ambition, achievement and rejection. A great place to visit to understand aspects of Australian history. The staff were super helpful and knowledgeable.

We had the high tea, which consisted of about 16 savoury and sweet treats and a huge scone each with cream and strawberry jam. The smooked salmon blini was great, as was the passionfruit macaroon. The wild mushroom tartlet was a bit lacking, wlthough pastry was good. Least impressive were the cucumber sandwiches. The lunch menu looked interesting, with lots of choices. It is worth a visit for the feeling of oen space, both indoors and out, and the lovely gardens to wander in. Even in a perfect summer's day, there was not a feeling of being crowded. The staff were efficient and friendly.

Hi, I am bringing a friend from Bulgaria and also some Australian friends to Vaucluse House on Friday 25th September for lunch and would like to know what times the guided tours are on, and also if you can prebook them.

Hi Margaret, the tours are run by volunteers so unsure of the time. Best to go to their website and contact them directly. You have to pay an entry fee.
