Fun, sporty experience in the green! Apart from the green surroundings there is not much to see, but nevertheless it is a fun activity for families or groups.
The way out is slightly uphill but you don't have to be an Olympian to cycle up. At Falaën station you can take a rest before returning. The descent was lovely, we didn't have to pedal at all. The whirring and throbbing sound of an old train, and the wind in your hair - you arrive downstairs completely zen!
Opposite the falaen station you can have a drink in a cafe. Not highly recommended to do this - they are not so friendly, rather stressed and it takes a very long time before you get the drinks. You might as well bring your own drinks!
No (clean) toilet facilities at the departure point, only a construction workers toilet.

A truly unique experience. Very fun to do. We chose the route with the abbey as a stopover, which is highly recommended. There were 9 of us so we had 3 railbikes and it was fantastic. The ride back takes place at eleven o'clock because it is a bit downhill, so it is very easy to do with limited fitness or small children.

The 2024 price is €22/car for 1 section and €44/car for the entire 14km round trip.
Honestly, the price is exorbitant for the infrastructure and general organization.
Website reflecting the experience, approximate and waiting times poorly or poorly explained. Duration of the 1st section 20min, 40min wait to continue the 2nd section. For the return, same wait! If only establishments (coffee shop, sandwich shop, ice cream parlor) would allow you to relax….
Nice to do with children but a picnic to be planned to fill the wait.

I went there on Sunday January 14 with my partner. I had a very good past experience from spring 2021 and I wanted to share it. Given the almost negative temperatures, I inquired on the site to find out if the attraction was open. No comment. So I decide to go there. At the checkout I still make sure that the attraction will not suffer from the cold. I am assured that no. We pay €22. Since a group of Flemish people are taking the same start and there are only two of us, we are put in front. After an initial push we realize that we are pedaling through the semolina as they say. We called the “guide” 3 times who assured us that it was going to be okay, it was just because of the cold. I actually joked by asking for a return at 8 p.m. rather than 2:30 p.m. given the few millimeters of progress that we were barely able to make. In the end we may have managed to pedal 100m of the course, the rest I pushed the handcar. Fortunately we took the shortest route (Falaen-Maredsous 3km-3km). Given these conditions we decided to return on foot (without having to push a handcar). So we didn't show up at the agreed time and we got a comment. The guide told us to try the return because he said we were on the right side of the slope. In fact, the return worked well. On the other hand, I will remember the very poor customer experience. Charging full price for the attraction when it wasn't working and on top of that not even adapting the times and getting comments... I had a good first experience. So I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they were wrong. But in any case, never again in winter!

Well maintained rail bikes, cheap and discount with teacher card (Flanders)! you have plenty of time for a walk to Maredsous Abbey (very beautiful), through a cool tunnel and beautiful paths. Nice experience. You hardly have to pedal on the way back, it goes so smoothly :-)

I really wanted to try rail bikes as we don't have them in the UK and, believe it or not, this was my main reason for visiting Belgium! I wasn't disappointed. It was such a fun day. We had walked from our hotel (Hotel Les Jardins de la Molignee) to Warnant where you can start the rail bike route - the walk took about 30 - 40 mins along the lovely traffic-free Ravel 150. We'd pre-booked our slot in advance via the website and was greeted by a lovely informative lady who gave us all the information we needed to know about the trip up to Maredsous.
You can decide either to do just the 4km and back or you take a short break at the 4 km mark and then carry on the final 3 km to Maredsous. We did this longer version, then took a stroll up to the abbey (thankful to the rail bike lady for giving us instructions on how to find the abbey as we may have been lost without her input!). We spent a couple of hours there before the 7 km journey back. At the half way point there are toilets and a snack hut which sells drinks, ice creams etc which was handy as it was very hot on the day we did our trip.
The bikes themselves are fun and very easy to control. Literally cycle (like a bike) and a foot brake to slow/stop. It was really fun to enjoy the views and scenery and give a cheery 'bonjour' to other walkers and cyclists along the route. It's also great how you set off at slightly different times so that there aren't any rail bike 'traffic jams'! We weren't stuck behind anyone, nor did anyone get stuck behind us.
It was very slightly uphill going but coming back obviously more downhill so it was a really laid-back trip back as it was super easy.
I really want to do rail biking again!!! Thank you for making it a fun and memorable experience.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to the area. We weren’t totally sure what to expect and worried about it being very busy (it was Good Friday) but it was lovely and quiet. We took two bikes for our group of 6 and everyone enjoyed having a go (even the five year old who could only just reach to pedal with help). We weren’t sure about whether to cycle straight back or head to the monastery for an early lunch but we decided on the latter and were really glad we did. It was a lovely short walk and there was plenty of choice of good, affordable food and drink. The cycle back is slightly downhill and much easier than on the way there.
