We went here the day before we were leaving and it didn't disappoint! Much better than I expected, if you love music I think you'll enjoy this. Very in depth history of Icelandic rock and pop music going back to the beginning. It's impressive the amount of music that comes out of this small country! My favorite part was probably the interactive 'records'... you could choose an artist and then a multimedia display would allow you to go forward and rewind their biography. I could have spent a lot of time here alone. The gift shop has some unique merchandise as well. Overall I found some great new music to follow.

Visited the museum on our last afternoon in Iceland on the way to Keflavik airport, and enjoyed it. The only Icelandic musicians I knew about were Bjork, of course, and my very, very beloved Sigur Ros. Now I know about Kaleo, and a bunch of others. We bought a Kaleo vinyl album in the sweet little museum shop.
During our week-long stay, I was very surprised to hear American music in every shop and restaurant. I suppose I expected to hear a wider variety of music everywhere, more European, and especially more Icelandic music. Even on a Northern Lights bus tour, nothing but American music. How odd. But then, at the museum, we learning about the former US Army base, and the musical impact that had in Iceland.
Really interesting to me was the complete silence in the museum, which was SO welcome. And if you wanted to hear music, just stroll over to the turntables and choose a record to spin. That was fun!
I just wish there was some grand Sigur Ros exhibit, other than the massive wall art at the entry. Would have loved to see some hand written stuff by the guys in the band, like there was at the Bowie touring exhibit pre-Covid in Brooklyn.

We found out when we are nearly done that the boy at the front desk should have provided us with a tablet so that we could hear the music. He was preoccupied with watching cartoons on his computer and apparently forgot.

So my flight was cancelled... stuck in Keflavik for a day.
I greatly enjoyed two small museums in the area today... but this was not one of them.
The main thing I was interested in was the movies they show at the museum... being interested in learning more about Icelandic music.
A giant time line is presented in a dull, dry manner. I tried to choke it down but it did not hold my interest.
In the theatre, they were showing a movie, broken with no sound. We were literally the only people in theatre portion... waited 40 minutes (as they are suppose to be short movies) but then were told it is 140 min long.
So we left not understanding Icelandic music any better at all. The girl at the desk shrugged. She should have offered a refund as the one single thing I was interest in did not work.
They should remove the broken film until it can be fixed and not expect people to wait hours in silence.
Very disappointed. Woild give zero stars if possible.

A very enjoyable museum, located conveniently close to the Keflavik airport. Visited for just over an hour and learned so much about the history of music in Iceland. The exhibits go way back in time, including some items from the 1800's. The focus, of course, is more on modern music history starting in the 1940's. The exhibits continue in chronological order, right up to today. There are many hands-on exhibits and activities to enjoy. The latest pop stars are covered in detail. Much of the memorabilia has been signed by the artists as they visited the museum. The exhibits display a lot of memorabilia and are very clean and well organized. If you are a fan of music, this is a must-see stop on your way to/from the airport.

Une visite au coeur de la musique islandaise, avec un focus sur Björk, Of Monsters and Men et Sigur Ròs. En raison de la COVID-19, le prêt d'Ipad est suspendu. Par contre la visite du musée est gratuite jusqu'au 31/03/21.

We visited the museum the day we were due to fly from Keflavik airport, and it was a great way to pass the time. The interactive exhibits were very clever and quite different to other museums. I didn't realise there was so much to know about Icelandic music!

C’est un musée sympa qui montre les groupes islandais et l’histoire de la musique en Islande. Je pense que c’est encore plus intéressant quand on est Islandais. Par contre nous avons découvert des groupes ! La personne à l’accueil est super gentille

Op onze laatste dag voor vertrek kwamen we toevallig dit museum tegen. We waren zeer aangenaam verrast met deze mooie tentoonstelling van de muziekcultuur van IJsland. Muziek van een kleine gemeenschap met grote impact.

It would be too long of a walk, worth going to but do take a taxi. If you are staying in Keflavik then you could walk pretty much from anywhere in town.

Hey Stephen,
yes, actually there is. There's a 6 meter display about them, which has their back story and some photographs. You will also find one of Brynjar Leifsson guitars which he's used to record and used on OMAM's tours around the world. We also have a lot of their backstage passes on display and a signed copy of their first single 'Little Talks'.
The museum is located in Keflavik - 5 minutes away from Keflavik airport - and about 30-40 minutes away from Reykjavik. It's a great first or last stop on your journey to Iceland.
