This museum in New Taipei City is strongly recommended as a counter-balance to the buzz of modern Taipei, the wonders of the National Palace Museum and the lovely parks, to give you an idea of the brutal nature of Taiwan’s past and how far things have changed since the end the “White Terror” – the period of martial law which ended as recently as 1987. The Museum is in what used to be a detention centre. The guided or audio tours take you to the rooms where political detainees were tried; and you can see just how prisoners were kept and how they were forced to live. The displays are excellent, and you get a vivid sense of the hardships suffered by so many Taiwanese (and non-Taiwanese nationals) who for some reason were suspected by the ruling regime. If you are as lucky as I was, you may even get to talk to a former detainee; they can explain vividly the hardships and sense of hopelessness felt by so many inmates. (If you want some context before you visit but find history books heavy going, you might read Green Island by Shawna Yang Ryan, a story of a family whose father was detained. Green Island housed another detention centre, which you can also visit.)

看完會更加了解白色恐怖時期,沒有任何言論自由,還會莫名被冠上莫須有的罪名,慘一點的還可能直接被消失
可以邊參觀還有一些互動式的遊戲可以體驗

I think this is a must see place to learn about a difficult period of modern Taiwanese history and the White Terror. You can enter all the cells, rooms and there is a an evocative memorial to the victims. It is well set up with many original objects from the time . I loved how I was freely left to wander around and take my time in each part .

This is part of the National Human Rights Museum of Taiwan. It is the actual site of a detention and incarceration centre, where torture occurred under the military regime of Taiwan. The silent shell of the building hides untold tales of severe suffering. A chilling yet important stop on a visit to Taipei. It is slightly out of the way, so private transport may be necessary.

This human rights museum offers a prison where till the 1980s political prisoners where held. On the premises are furthermore two courts, one of which is a military court. Impressive. A lot to learn here about Taiwan’s post World War II history.

I'm not sure why this place sees only a few tourists but it definitely deserves more visitors because it's one of the best museums I've seen in Taipei.
Overall, they did a great job in preserving the detention center facilities, work areas, and courtrooms, so you can really get a feel of the place as it was when it was still being used as a prison during the White Terror period in Taiwan's history. They even preserved the arrangement of the actual courtrooms where famous trials were held. The exhibits have excellent descriptions so you can read through them to understand the context behind the place or the materials on display. All of this left a great impression on me and I feel that more people should know about it and see all of this for themselves.
They have guided tours (also available in English) at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. If you miss the tour or if you don't want to wait, you can always rent a free audio guide at the visitor center. All you need to do is leave an ID at the counter. Do try your best to follow the sequence in the audio guide map because it will allow you to better appreciate each part of the facility and following it will help you piece together the daily life of the prisoners, starting from the moment they enter the prison.
Finally, if you do rent the audio guide, do not miss the final stop in the map (numbered 19). It's easy to overlook since it's in front of the parking lot, but I personally think it's worth a visit, especially if you've toured the whole facility and checked out all the prison cells.

We seemed to be the only people there other than kids on school tours. This museum does not seem to be well known. I thought it was one of the best in Taipei, and. over the years, I've been in most of them. The exhibits are the actual rooms where trials were held and prisoners incarcerated during the White Terror period of martial law (1949-1992). There is also interpretive material that emphasizes how arbitrary these legal proceedings could be, but what most impresses itself on the memory are the actually courtrooms and prison cells as well as the work areas such as the commercial laundry in which prisoners were put to works. This place is not overrun with tourists. Go for an interesting afternoon's outing.
