One thing that Matelica is not short of is churches. Wandering around the town, we saw more than half a dozen without even trying.
Chiesa della Beata Mattia was the most striking and the most beautiful of the churches we saw.
It's the oldest church in town, dating from 1225. Not surprisingly, it has been substantially rebuilt over the centuries and what you see today is largely in the Baroque style. The facade is a beautiful cream and white with curling, swirling decoration including garlands and cherubs, heavy cornices, pilaster columns and large snail-like scrolls.
Inside, the church’s jewel in the crown is the preserved body of Saint Beata Mattia which is on display under the altar.
It’s a strange thing to be looking at the body of a woman who died over 700 years ago.
She died in Matelica, in the convent next door, in 1319. She was much-loved, having devoted her life to God and to helping the local poor and needy. When she she was dying it was reported that a mysterious glow surrounded her and sweet and fragrant perfume spread throughout the convent. On her death, a brilliant beam of light shone down upon the convent. In 1536, some 200+ years after her death, an exhumation revealed her body to still be incorrupt and to be still exuding a mysteriously fragrant substance.
Other points of interest include the 15th century bell tower and the traditional Poor Clare system of partitioning of the church so that parishioners and nuns were separated into different areas.

Ci siamo passati davanti con la macchina e abbiamo deciso di visitarla. Purtroppo la chiesa era chiusa, come altre a Matelica che ha un centro storico molto gradevole e grazioso. La facciata è molto bella e te la trovi di fronte all'improvviso, peccato nn esser potuti entrare, alla prossima!

Finalmente dopo la chiusura causa terremoto la bellissima chiesa è stata riaperta più bella che mai, dove le spoglie della Beata Mattia sono state riportate nella sua casa, se passate da queste parti consiglio di farvi una visita

Una piccola chiesa che racchiude tutta la spiritualità e l’essenza della protettrice dei matelicesi, venerata e amata da tutta la popolazione. Entrare e trovarsi come all’improvviso fuori dal mondo, in una sensazione di pace e serenità che in pochi altri luoghi si riesce a trovare. Se passate per Matelica una visita alla Beata Mattia non è un obbligo ma un piacere per la vostra anima

Ieri non abbiamo potuto visitare lachiesa perchè chiusa dopo il terremoto del 2016. Si può vedere solo la saletta in cui è conservato il corpo della Beata. Per accendere ceri (5 euro) o fae acquisti di oggetti sacri bisogna suonare alle Suore e sperare di essere nell'orario giusto (quando non pregano). Chissà quando verrà riaperta??

Come è bello entrare in questo luogo sacro ed entrare in contatto con l'Immensità. Inginocchiarsi e pregare davanti ad una Donna tanto amata da tutta la cittadina. Ringraziarla e chiederle un dono, una grazia. Un luogo dove è impossibile restare immuni e non credere.

Bellissima chiesa con interni molto sfarzosi. Sotto all'altare vi sono i resti della Santa Mattia che aiuterebbe a rimanere incinta.
