Did our google first before we went to the service station. Quite difficult to ask questions so we just took our translation app.

Most of the reviews mentioned that the staffs there only friendly to foreigner. Not in my case though. Ms. Arai who sat in ticket counter was very rude to me. I wanted to buy Tokyo Wide Pass, and she keep mentioning places in some areas are close. I answer that I already have ryokan reservation, so I have to go. I won't ask for refund. She seems very upset that she still need to do her job and preparing pass for me.

On the other hand, Ms. Yu who stand in information area was very helpful and welcoming since the beginning.

Do your research in advance, dont blindly trust stuff over there.

近辺には他に案内所らしきものが見当たらず、日本人でも利用できるか確認してみると、一瞬、躊躇してから、どうぞ、とのこと。
中に入ると、パンフレットや地図など日本人への案内がないわけでは無いのに、外から見ると外国人にしか案内しません、と言われてるようで敷居が高いです。
ただ、日本人には冷たい対応なのに、外国人には懇切丁寧な案内をしたり、あり得ないような、お得なチケットを手にしている姿を見ていると、気分は良いものではありません。

no forget u must redeem your JR voucher here for the pass, yes it is not a high tech pass just laminate n SHOW to get in n out of stations. Service is great n staff helpful.

only way to keep track of thousands who come here to travel , and yes no can complain about te prices for te pass. they will help u to reserve you seats and times for trains BUT U must plan ahead too, location ere n Narita outstandin staff considerin the volume

Como optamos pelo passe mais caro do JR tínhamos direito a reservar horário e assento. Pretendíamos fazer isto no JR de Haneda, entretanto como chegamos no meio da Golden Week eles só estavam fazendo reservas para os próximos 5 dias, que não era nosso caso. Existem vários escritório deste tipo espalhados por Tokyo mas devido a Golden Week optamos por este que é o maior deles. Apesar de ter uma longa fila são vários os atendentes portanto a coisa flue bem.

Apesar do nosso atendente ter um ótimo inglês recomendo já chegar lá com uma tabela dos dias e horários pretendidos pois o processo é todo manual - portanto bastante lento. Finalizadas as reservas o atendente entrega vários tíquetes impressos que devem ser apresentados juntamente com o passe do JR a cada trecho da viagem

The JR Pass, is a piece of paper with your name and passport number handwritten on it, and laminated. Hi-tech Japan?!?! We expected something different.

This piece of card can not be scanned anywhere and it does not automatically give you a seat on a train as that is a different process which again is not automated.

So in order to get your JR Pass after its ordered and paid for in Australia, you go to one of the JR Offices which are at only a few key stations on the metro system. Hard to find offices? Yes, but once you find the Office you wait in a queue to hand over your piece of paper from Australia together with your passport, then you write your name and passport number of a piece of paper; that becomes the JR pass (once laminated). None of that process is automated and feels unnecessarily manual. Every 'person' we dealt with who was serving us at these counters over the course of our stay were helpful and pleasant; but waiting in the line just felt unnecessary for a process which should be easier online. Why cant the pass be electronic and part of your Apple Wallet?? Why cant it be a 'pre-loaded' metro card that can scan in and scan out at gates?? Why cant it be easier to understand the system and book train rides online??

As we had paid for the Green Car pass (the equivalent of Business Class for the Bullet Train), we needed to book seats for our Bullet Train journeys. This meant we needed to know exactly what trips we wanted to take, what dates and approximately what times. If we didn’t know this, we would have to come back to this office at another time (again, the office is only at a few stations on the metro system). Lucky I had roughly planned which days we wanted to go to certain places (including our city transfers). We could show our brand new JR Pass for the staff to manually search their system and issue us separate tickets with our seats referenced on them. We needed to carry these tickets, but never where we required to show them to anyone(??), nor are they able to be scanned at any entrance/ exit gate (as that is a separate manual procedure).

It appears that in the background of the ‘system’, the staff aboard the train know if you have tickets as they come to you with a refresher towel each time you board (so it appears they are expecting you to board and take those seats at that time). But you cant scan those tickets anywhere, nor can you scan the JR Pass. Instead, you walk to the staff stationed at the end of the bay of ticket scanners/ gates, to show that person your JR Pass. They give it a cursory glance, taking in none of the information and nod at you to go through. Why oh why wouldn’t they issue a card which is valid for a week or two weeks (whatever you had purchased) which you can scan in/ scan out to record your journeys so as to reduce the manual nature of the exercise is beyond me.

Why wouldn’t we book the seats online once we had our JR Pass registered you may ask? Quite simply, the website appears to have been created prior to the invention of the internet, and it is near impossible to navigate or to work out how to even read/ interpret the timetable, let alone go any further steps. This meant we needed to be prepared (with our JR Pass on us) if we ever saw a JR Office so we could book a day trip (or a city transfer).

The process just needs a re-think and consider the needs of the users.

Whole process was very easy as we had been provided with all paperwork & instructions before our travel. Customer service attendant spoke good English & was very helpful with instructions for our first Shinkansen trip out of Tokyo.

We exchanged our JR Rail Passes here and booked a shinkansen ticket at the same time. We approached cautiously, not sure if we were in the right place, and a very cheerful and kind woman who works there came out and spoke to us in English to let us know this was the right place.
We weren't exactly sure what we were doing, but they made it very clear, easy and painless. All of the staff we encountered here spoke English. In fact, many of them speak at least three languages (saw Korean and French speaking staff as well). They wear a pin on their shirt of the languages they can speak, which is pretty cool.
There's a huge variety of pamphlets and guidebooks in different languages, so it's worth it to look through while you're there.
