Lovely monument to the fallen, the former & current serving soldiers of the regiments concerned. Easy climb, good even steps with 3 or 4 small platforms to take a breather (if required 😂). Amazing views but because their is only a 3/4 viewing platform at the top, can’t photograph all views.
Atmospheric but reflective and thoughtful rather than eerie. Arrived on the annual reunion Memorial Day but left early as Civies and we felt like interlopers to a lot of private thoughts and reunions and happy and sad memories.
No one’s fault but we felt inadequate to these brave men and women. A lovely monument in a spectacular setting and clean and free of litter, recommended. Torch tower also on site, lovely.

Beautiful place to reflect on the past . The views from the top are breathtaking. We spent no longer than 20 minutes there. Our little trip was let down by quite rude staff . We had driven past the box as we followed a car in front up . They parked on the grass and so did we . They got out a bit quicker than us and headed up to the tower . I was sat in the car fumbling around in my purse for change to pay, when a man appeared . I couldn’t believe how rude he was to us . Yes we had driven past the box like so many others did while we were there . My partner is a police officer and even he was shocked at how we were spoken to. We felt like little children being told off . The place is beautifully maintained but the pay sign definitely needs to be moved to the top . I think people are genuinely distracted when they drive up looking at the tower that they miss the stop sign. I only saw it as I was a passenger. Which may I add should only be used at a junction to fully stop cars . A please pay here sign would be much better. It’s a beautiful place and so well maintained. Absolutely agree you should pay to park there . But there’s no need to treat grown adults like children . You have no idea what people might have going on in their lives so please always be kind .

This is a striking memorial on a commanding hilltop which can be seen from many miles around. The views are incredible, even on a misty day.
The lawns are particularly well kept, which cannot be easy given the uneven ground. We would have gone in the cafe if it was open. I think it is closed on Wednesdays.
We accessed the site from the Glory Mine end of the Tramway. It is a ten minute walk along the footpath. One section is a bit steep but otherwise an easy walk.

Such a serene place to visit for reflection. Great views too. Not sure why but the staff don’t appear to like people. We, admittedly, drove by the sign requesting payment but were walking back to pay. The bloke followed us to the car, rudely asked up to move our car as we would ruin his grass pretty much told us off for driving past the sign.

Was nearby and just happened upon this memorial. This was my dads regiment so I was humbled to visit. Beautifully maintained. Climbed the steps up the tower for fantastic views. Lovely place to visit.

The Memorial itself is a lovely tribute to the fallen. We visited during Covid times so the tower was closed, so we will be returning to venture even higher!
Grounds immaculately kept, visited with 2 toddlers and although they don't understand the seriousness of the memorial, they loved running around the 'bumpy bits' in the grass.
The views of the stunning area we are so lucky to call home were the highlight. Will return in summer!

This curious tower, a memorial that is known locally as Crich Stand, stands high on Crich Hill in rural Derbyshire and can be seen for miles around. It’s certainly worth a visit if you are out and about in Derbyshire.
This 63-foot tower opened in 1923 to commemorate the 11, 409 men of the Sherwood Foresters who gave their lives in World War I. In 1952 it was rededicated to the memory of the 1,520 men of the regiment who died in World War II, and in 1991 it was again re-dedicated to Sherwood Foresters who have given their lives in active service in various conflicts since then.
A number of towers have occupied the site, on the edge of a former quarry. A wooden tower was built on 1760, but was replaced by a stone tower in 1788. Over the decades it became dilapidated and was replaced by a stone tower in 1851. A land slip into the nearby quarry in 1882, and a lightning strike in 1901 led to the closure of the tower. In 1922 it was decided to rebuild the tower as war memorial. Stones from the previous towers, including one from the 1788 tower, were incorporated into the war memorial. You can see that stone on the left hand side. On the viewing platform at the top of the tower you’ll see the ‘lighthouse’ light. It’s used as a beacon on commemorative occasions.
The tower is open 6 days a week (closed each Wednesday). You can climb the 53 steps of a spiral staircase to the viewing platform at the top. On a fine day you will get astonishing 360 degree views of the beautiful and verdant Derbyshire landscape; it is said that you can see the towers of Lincoln Cathedral 50 miles to the east. That was the case on a previous visit some years ago; on this visit the winter mist limited visibility to a few hundred yards, but the views of a snowy landscape surrounding the tower were very pretty and warranted the climb to the top.
The memorial tower is a short walk from the Crich Tramway Museum. The driveway to the memorial is off Plaistow Green Road. As you proceed up to the memorial you’ll see a stopping point with an honesty box for the payment of the £1.50 parking charge. There is also a £0.50 charge to climb the tower, placed in an honesty box just inside the entrance to the tower at the foot of the spiral staircase. It would be churlish not to pay these small charges, as funds raised contribute to the upkeep of the tower and the nicely manicured grounds surrounding it.
I certainly recommend a visit, whether it’s to pay your respects to the fallen or to take in the views. Social distancing measures are required, and hand sanitizer is provided at the entrance to the tower.

You can park at the site. Fantastic views all around. Tower has winding stone steps to top entrance fee is a very modest 50p at the moment. Views from the top are amazing but quite windy. Dogs are allowed. There are no disabled facilities to enter the tower area.
Location is next to the crich tramway village

You can see a very long way from the monument. Definitely worth the short climb up the spiral staircase. Not much room at the top so make sure there’s no one up there first by shouting up as suggested on the notice.
A sobering but also inspiring memorial to the fallen including those unfortunately from recent conflicts. Definitely worth visiting but please respect it.

We were visiting Crich Tramway Museum and decided to walk up to the memorial from the end tram stop. The walk only takes about 10 minutes and is fairly easy on a well maintained path up a slight incline. The memorial is well laid out and beautifully kept, and it's well worth the donation to climb to the top of the tower (56 steps)

Possibly walking from the briars, crich to crich stand on Saturday. What’s the terrain like? Can it be done with a heavy duty push char?
Many thanks
