It may be short but it offers some really nice views. This is a must stop for anyone who comes to the park. Worth stepping out.

This is a fun and thrilling hike, if you are not afraid of heights. You need to be sure footed. It’s not too long, there is a lot of variety. The view at the end is ok, not the best vista in the Badlands… but nice. This is a must do. It was a lot of fun.

This is a fun trail, but if you are afraid of heights you might want to go down through the river bank and not climb the ladder. We found a lot of people who in the middle of the way decided that it was to scary for them and returned.
If you can pass that fear, after you arrive to the “notch” and take some pictures, go down and turn right as soon as you get back into the trail, and go to the end of the canyon, hike up for another great view of the valley, and get even higher by taking a steep hike to the best notch there, with amazing views.

This is a great trail even if you decide not to climb up the ladder! The views are outstanding and you're walking through the Badlands. The ladder isn't that hard but at the top, it was a bit windy. Since my teen daughter was uncomfortable, we walked a bit but came back down before completing the hike.

This trail is great fun for people who are not afraid of ledges and narrow cliffs, uneven footing and route finding. There are markers, but you pick your way from one marker to the next. Climb a steep log ladder to the top of a cliff and around to an open drop off viewpoint. Return the way you came. It gets fairly crowded and there were about 16 people at the view on a Sunday afternoon. Enjoy (or don't!)

This was the most fun activity we did in Badlands. The hike is both beautiful and challenging, and most importantly, the view at the end is simply incredible. It has everything you came to see at Badlands NP. There are some challenging spots both the ladder climb and the canyon edge but do not let these deter you. Please note this is a signature hike in the NPS system for the ladder which is a woodrail ladder that begins gradual as simple steps before ending vertical like a ladder. Truly it is not that bad, easier going up than down. You then walk on the canyon ledge that adds some additional excitement to this hike.

While this is a fun diversion along the hike, the more impressive part is simply hiking in the valley of these tremendous badland peaks and features before reaching an incredible "Notch" in the wall where you have an amazing view of the valley below. Both the end view and the unique trail make this a MUST DO and simply the best part of Badlands. While it can be crowded with a pinch point at the ladder, we had the entire hike nearly to ourselves. For crowd control, I would start on the east side first and visit this hike early in the morning or early in your entrance to the park. Again this is a signature hike that you must do.

We hiked early in the morning and had the trail to ourselves until we were headed back. Although there was a bighorn sheep that hung around near the trailhead.
Really enjoyed the ladder and the view at the end. Great short hike.

This is a great moderate, more strenuous hike. It’s fairly short, but about half way out you ascend a log ladder and at the top it’s a bit more adventurous. You’d want to keep a close eye on kids, and those with a fear of heights might want to reconsider this trail. Usually we find that trials are “over sold” regarding the difficulty. This was our first hike in SD and afterwards we decided to trust what the ratings said. However I totally recommend this hike. It was fun and different!

Beautiful trail and scenery. The ladder and trail are not as hard as one may perceive. There are plenty of people traversing it. You may also avoid the ladder by going up a small trail to the left of the ladder.

There is a great view of swallows' nests at the end of the trail that goes past the ladder.

The issue with this very nice trail is that there is this ladder that scares so many people. Since there is a bottleneck at the ladder, you can go up the side (on the left, the second 'gully' closest to the ladder) and avoid having to wait for people coming down.

Once you get up the ladder, the trail is well marked and there are a couple of narrow ridges, but it's a pretty easy hike. At the end, you get to look out over the grasslands and it's a lovely view.

On the way back, you may have to wait for people going down the ladder, as there seem to be a lot of people who are terrified and move at a glacial pace getting down and you have no choice but to wait.

The whole hike is about 45 minutes, although that can be longer if you have to wait for bottlenecks at the ladder.
