We parked our small motorhome at and hiked the Saddle Pass Trail since rated moderate challenging on All Trails. Take water. Forget it - it is difficult. Steep with slippery gravel and sand . Could not have made it up without trekking poles. A lot of people going up or down went back. We thought it was too difficult for us seniors to go back down. We hiked the Castle Trail out to Fossil Exhibit Trail Head for 2 miles and planned to hike back along the Loop Road to our RV. We were rescued by 2 hikers we met earlier on the Castle Trail headed towards Saddle Pass Trail. When we got to Fossil Exhibit Trail Head, they were waiting for us to drive us back to our RV. This avoided hiking back along the hot Loop Road to our RV.

Didn't expect this trail to be so scenic. I think it was my favorite trail in the park. It resembled a very steep mountain goat trail, but it's pretty short. Turn around at the mushroom rock formations at the top of the pass. Bring trekking poles for the hike down.

Most hikes in Badlands a fairly flat either in the plateaus of the badlands or in the grasslands. This is a great hike, short but vertical. For me the short length did not make the vertical strenuous but it is very steep. The other challenge is the badlands are a flakey, slippery soil. This is not such a problem going up but can be going down. If you have good hiking boots this should not be a problem with short steps. Despite some challenges, this is a MUST DO hike, second to Notch. The views are amazing both in route but especially at the top. Our group really enjoyed this hike as one of the most fun things we did on our day in the the park. This section gives you the best views of the Wall, including is own littler Matterhorn, which is a kind of symbol for the park. For me, bring good hiking shoes and make time to do this, great experience.

Great short hike. It had just rained so was a bit muddy. The first bit was definitely steep but it then evened out. I expected a longer incline and more rock scrambling. My kids had a blast. Bring water.

it's a short trail, the official guide said it is 0.25 miles, however, the level of difficulty is strenuous, so it suggest taking half to one hour to walk this trail. Hiking this trail you need to climb up the Badlands Wall to a view over the White River Valley, The trails ends where it connects with the Castle and Medicine Root Loop trail.
At the beginning of the trail, there is a bridge leading to the map/information board of the trail. I just walk a little bit, but find that it's very challenging, so I didn't continue. But if you are physically fit, you can take this challenge. by the way, the Badlands wall seen here is quite beautiful, with red horizontal strips.

We thought this was better than the Notch Trail. It doesn’t have the log ladder but it had a fairly long steep climb and connects to several miles of other trails.

This was a fun but really strenuous hike involving a continuous steep ascent up the mountain. Some incredible views along the way and at the top. Almost as difficult during the descent with loose gravel in parts. This is serious hiking. Good shoe wear is a must. Took about an hour to go up and come back.

This is a short but strenuous hike. This is one of those that is nearly as difficult going down as it is going up. The trail can be difficult to follow in places but the good news is that all roads lead to Rome.
Good footgear is important as this trail can be slippery even in dry conditions. The reward at the end of this trail is access to several other great adventures.

This trail is short but most of the time you’re going straight uphill. We went up to the top with kids ages 7,9,10, and 15. We stopped for some great views. My kids found a couple fun rock formations to rest at along the way. We saw people at the very top on the way up which made it more exciting knowing we’d end up with that viewpoint. I definitely held my 7 year old’s hand on the last section as it gets steep and narrow. This was probably the most thrilling section of the park for us and we also hiked The Notch. We were lucky that it was 80 and sunny. I could imagine it being difficult if wet. We took it slow on the way down. We didn’t have a hiking stick or boots but this would be the one area of the park I’d recommend them for. Overall a great time.

Is this trail suitable for an almost 9, and 10 year old?

Yes, we brought our infant (carrying) 5,8,10-year-old here. The path is a little bit strenuous and if it is rainy or snowy it will be slippery but we had fun and mud washes off. My kids had a blast looking at the rocks and just the trails.
