Sun Notch Trail and View

This trail is worth the hike for the incredible view of the phantom ship and lake. The cobalt blue color of the lake is memorable.

Great views of the Phantom Ship. If you hike the loop counter clockwise, the ascent is a little gentler.

Fantastic views of the phantom ship!

My husband and I and our friends picked one trail to hike during our one day visit to Crater Lake. We were quite happy with our choice. It was less than a mile roundtrip but took almost an hour with frequent stops to enjoy the scenic views. It has a bit of an incline but it's not too strenuous. There were a few people on the trail but it was easy to social distance.

Parking might be an issue

On the Southern end of Rim Drive. Parking is terrible for as popular as this hike is.
This is a pretty easy .5 mile hike. Good family hike. Fine gravel, with an incline. This is supposed to be an accessible hike if you have an all terrain wheelchair. I don't know. You might need help going up.

This has a great shot of Phantom Ship. There's some other good views of the lake as well.
One of my favorite stops on the Rim Drive.

Views of Phantom Ship

If you want views of Phantom Ship, this is the hike to do. It is an easy .8 mile loop with 127 feet elevation gain. Took us a total of 40 minutes to do this. We did this hike on Tuesday, July 20 at around noon.

Views are worth the inclines

For some reason I thought this trail was flatter but no, although still not vigorous. Best views on the lake. Go early for parking

One of the "musts" of Crater Lake NP

The guidebooks are right. This is one of the premier hikes in the park. It is not difficult and the payoff is plentiful views of the lake particularly Phantom Ship. It is on the East Rim Drive however, so you have to make sure that is open. We visited in July and the East Rim Drive opened the second day we were there, so if this is on your list (and it should be) go later or check ahead.

We did this trail for sunset photos. You get a great view of Phantom ship rock. There is a bench and it has great sunset photo options.

IMO best view of the Phantom Ship

What looks like an easy unassuming walk turns out to have the best view of the Phantom Ship. We arrived around 11:00 am and it was beyond spectacular with mirror image of the island and views where you simply are not able to describe the color blue of the water. It is magnificent. It was not that crowded as it is on the east rim and people probably tend to arrive later in the day. Our 2nd day we did Cleetwood Cove at 8:15 - swam and then made our way over to this trail and were rewarded with very few people on a Friday morning. Enjoy!
