This is 2.5 miles one-way, so total 5 miles. It's for the whole time to the overlook going strenuous up, do not underestimate it. beginning its good easy path, then it becomes (as expected) uneven path with rocks etc.; The overlook is nice, for us it was a 3..5 hour hike, with many small stops (upwards) for photos and resting.

Trail that starts at the visitor center and goes practically all the way uphill. Relatively easy floor to walk on. The view from above allows a complete view of the park entrance and its first few miles.

Sehr lohnenswerter aber anstrengender Trail. Am besten morgens oder am Vormittag starten, denn warm wird es von alleine. Am Overlook View angekommen lohnt es sich wirklich sehr noch ein paar weitere Höhenmeter zu machen und nicht bei allen anderen Sitzen zu bleiben.
Die Aussicht wird noch grandioser und oben tummeln sich die Erdhörnchen.
Windbraker nicht vergessen !

This is 2.7 miles off Horseshoe Lake trail... I would estimate 6 mi round trip from visitor center AND 1700 foot elevation change UP! If you can make the strenuous trail (great that it's a short trail) it is well worth the climb to see the views at the top and as you climb the trail.

We decided to tackle this trail since it turned out to be a beautiful day. The trail is well marked and maintained. It is a steady incline with some great resting spots. The views from the top are amazing and provide a 360 view of the valleys. Quite impressive and wonderous. Keep going and you will be so happy.

Beautiful hike! We found poles to be very helpful on the steeper areas, especially on the descent. It appears obvious to go past the “overlook” sign at the end, definitely want to go to the next peak with cool rock formations and a marmot family sunning on top. The rocks and views were wonderful, even on a mostly cloudy day.

A great trail with scenic views along the way. It is a steep incline to get up there, but there’s plenty of spaces to stop and catch a breath (or take photos to cover you catching your breath). The trail is very well maintained and distinguished. The views at the overlook at stunning! Windy at the top, so you may want to pack a wind breaker or have a sweatshirt if you plan on staying atop for a bit.

Believe it when they say strenuous. The first half-mile of this beautiful hike is relatively flat. From there on, it goes up at a steep (for this septuagenarian) angle another 2+ miles.

The trail access is right from the visitor center parking lot. The elevation gain starts fairly gradual, and then after the 'superhighway' stops, it gets slightly more inclined. A very doable trail - just take breaks when you need to. The views at the top are very worth it.
The trail is fairly heavily visited - so the chances of seeing wildlife is probably on the minimal side. We saw a raven, ptarmigans, and a very greedy squirrel at the top.
We were there on the 3rd of September, so fall colors were definitely starting.

There are so many beautiful hikes ranging from 1-5 hours in Denali National Park straight from the visitor center, and this is one of the best. If you are in Denali for more than one day, maybe do this on your driving day or do it on the day you're not on the bus (as it can be done when cloudy too). We lucked out in August and had a clear day with views of Denali! You need to go a little bit past the sign in order to see it.
Even our friends that are not big hikers enjoyed the trek. The trails are VERY well maintained, and there are benches for stops along the way. Due to the high traffic, we were not concerned about bears. If we went early morning before people got up, we would have had spray with us. If you only have one day, you could add on a drive 15 miles into the park (longest you can go before buses only) or a tour of the dog kennels if you have kids.
Note: The trail starts out really flat and you're crossing a lot of roads, but it gets better! Just hang in there. Past the first bridge it's nature and great views.

My wife is very concerned about bears. I was wondering if this is a well traveled trail and do most people who take this hike carry bear spray with them?

This is a very well-traveled trail, but you should always have bear spray with you when hiking in Alaska! It's better to be safe than sorry!
