We hiked this trail on the 20th of June. Started at around 8:30 AM and there was still plenty of parking at the trailhead.

The trail itself was not too hard with multiple switchbacks leading to a moderate incline, but there was a lot of rapidly melting snow so either crampons or poles are a must (although we saw many people on the trail without either). At the top it was still all snow, so navigation is challenging as there are a few visible official trails. Also be careful of loose snow if you are heading there around this time as you can drop waist deep.

The lake was pretty quiet, although there were many people along the trail, most head to Delta Lake (we did Delta afterwards). I personally prefer Delta Lake, but Amphitheater is also beautiful and much less crowded.

This trail is actually more than 10 miles roundtrip. Two mileage trackers confirmed this, as have the trackers of many other hikers. We took our two kids (9 & 13), who are fairly experienced hikers and both had a blast (only kids on the trail the day we went). It's a steep climb on the way up and exposed to the sun, as others note. We saw a juvenile bear, but mostly were treated to extraordinary views of Bradley and Taggart Lakes, the valley, and two terrific lakes at the top meant for a nice break and picnic. If you aren't physically fit, I wouldn't attempt this one. To really experience Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone, you have to get out of your car and walk further than a boardwalk allow, and this trail is a fantastic option. Plan ahead with water, bear spray, and other supplies - enjoy!

Very steep hike with beautiful views of lakes and wildlife. It took us 6 1/2 hours roundtrip with a stop for lunch and some side hikes. Surprise Lake and Ampitheatre Lake are both worth the hike if you are physically able to get there.

Plan a whole day for the hike to Amphitheater lake and take lots of water. The hike is somewhat strenuous, not for the out of shape, but the views are amazing. This was my favorite part of our Tetons/Yellowstone vacation.

Yes it does... right when you get to the fist lake.. solitude lake... then up again to amphitheater.
I like hiking but even had to stop to catch my breath. lots of switchbacks, likely 99% of the trail!!! Haha

Bring water and drink lots.

The result is worth it. Views are bteathtaking, you keep climbing so the view of the valley behind you gets better and better, then the lakes at the end are beautiful.

Picnic at solitude lake is a blessing.

Went in july, not too too many people (but a decent amount). Most went the other way (Garnet? Garret?) to do actual rock climbing. If on a hot hot day and a little "wilder", I'd say bring bathing suit for a very cold refreshing dip. :)

Start early in the day, parking lot gets full quickly.

This hike was amazing! It was a tiring climb, but the view at the top is worth the work. We hiked it in mid July and the conditions were perfect.

This is a moderate to hard hike with some steep sections. We hiked mid-late September and hardly saw anyone. We did get some weather - rain and a bit of snow. It was very windy at the top, so bring a raincoat even on a clear day.

When we got to the Garnet Canyon Trail junction, people coming down from Amphitheater Lake reported a foot of snow on the trail. So we decided to take the (500 foot less altitude gain) Garnet Canyon Trail. Lovely views of the canyon up to where the official trail ends (and the technical climbers go down on their hands and knees to get through the boulder field).

We are a group of "AARP" worthy women. If we can do it, you can do it. It is an effort - with 18 switchbacks(fairly long) and 3,000ft increase in elevation.

It was a wonderful hike with wonderful views of the valley and lakes the 1st half and then, of course, the lakes at the top of the trail - at the 9860ft destination.

Mid Sept was good time to go .. Although there was some snow at the top but temps made for great hiking.

Slow and steady and you'll get there!

First things first: everything you've ever read, at any place, about this hike being tough is absolutely correct. Do not think people are exaggerating. I mean, the trail isn't anything like a technical mountain climb, but it's about four miles of constant uphill, switchback after switchback after switchback, and it's not paved (although, generally, it's a good trail), and it's at a significant grade.

But, it's worth it. Start early. Parking isn't quite as limited as I read many places, but you do want to start early. After all, it's an all-day hike. So, start early, take plenty -- and I do mean, PLENTY -- of water to stay hydrated, and bring along a lunch to enjoy at the top.

Take your time. There are plenty of places to just stop and take a look over Jackson Hole and the Gros Ventre range to the east. We did see one or two joggers on this hike (why???), but mostly this was a hiker's challenge. So, take your time.

Once you get near the top, you'll be frustrated by yet another switchback. And, yet another switchback. I promise, they do come to an end! First is Surprise Lake, at 9,540'. It's a gorgeous little lake with a trail around it that is fairly flat. (We didn't try it.) But you can rest here, climb on a large rock that's right at the shore of the lake, and sit and luxuriate in the glorious surroundings.

When you think to yourself, "You know, I came all this way, and I'm not even at the top yet," well, get back on the trail and go. It's another 0.2 miles to Amphitheater Lake, so named because the lake seems surrounded by mountains and, thus, a natural amphitheater. Amphitheater Lake is at 9,698'.

This, too, is a rather small lake in the grand scheme of things, but you've finally reached the top (although, see below), so it seems the most beautiful lake you've ever seen. And you wouldn't be wrong, after all the effort to get here! There is no trail around this lake, but we did see a number of people scrambling across steep hillsides with a lot of scree to get to a snowfield.

And, while you've arrived, you're not really, truly, at the top. There is another trail that make what you've just done seem easy. This trail takes you up farther, and you can choose to take the left fork to look down Garnet Canyon, or the right fork, which gives you a view of Teton Glacier and the Grand.

We took the left fork. At the top, it's pretty much a straight rock face on the other side, looking down. And down. It's not straight down for thousands of miles, but several hundred feet. And the canyon does spread out below you. It's gorgeous, if your stomach can take that! We didn't take the right fork.

But that trail! As I said, it made the four-plus strenuous miles to get here seem like child's play. This trail is steep. And rocky. And narrow. And downright treacherous if you're not careful. And it's just as hard, maybe harder, coming down as going up. Was it worth it? Well, if you take the right fork and do the Teton Glacier overlook, you're going to top 10,000 feet. That, alone, might be inspiration for you.

As it is, enjoy Amphitheater Lake. If you're bold (stupid?), take a quick dip in the lake. We saw one guy spend five seconds in the water. Otherwise, just enjoy what you've worked so very, very hard for. It is, absolutely, worth it.
