Beautiful views. Would suggest stopping at the Luftee lookout. This lookout had the best views on the whole road. We spent a half hour taking in the view from this lookout and the ever changing could patterns. Also, there was elk herds on the Cherokee side of the Newfound Gap Road

We loved driving the "Gap" road over the mountains!! So much fun and excellent views! They have several pull off areas where you can get out and take breathtaking pictures!!! Highly recommend!

The parking lot for the overlook is relative bigger, we circled the parking lot twice and found a parking spot.
The scenery is great, you can the blue smoky mountains here.

Two adults visited this on a Tuesday in late September 2023 on our way from Gatlinburg to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and is definitely worth a stop. Near the road to Clingmans Dome. Great views of the park at over 5000 feet in elevation. Large parking lot available and several trails lead from the area. It lies half in Tennessee and half in North Carolina—a great picture taking opportunity to stand with one foot in each state. There are restrooms available.

Very steep road up with quite a few pulloff areas to stop and get out or take pictures. Up at the top, there were beautiful views at the overlook with just the faintest fog. Classic picture taking spot at the NC/TN border. If you enjoy the views, this is a nice place to travel to.
Parking spots were mostly full, but we were able to get a spot here.

Major lookout point with large parking lot and restrooms. The Appalachian trail goes through this spot, which means you can jump back and forth across the state line (Tennessee and Kentucky).

We were recommended this place by an employee of the Thompson Hotel in Nashville, and what a good tip it was.
We drove up from where we were staying near Gatlinburg which took about 40 mins. The road itself is very picturesque but the speed limit of 35mph is painfully slow. Similar roads in the alps are 50mph.
It’s worth stopping at the visitor centre as you leave Gatlinburg as you can buy a car parking permit there which you need to park in any parking spot.
NewfoundGap sits on both the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, and the Appalachian Trail.
There are a number of trails signposted from the car park, all of which head off into the woods. We started out on a trail to Charlie’s Bunion, though never intending to go the whole distance due to time constraints. We did what was a beautiful walk of 10.5km ( 6.5 miles), which ascended gently on the way out.
There were very few folk on the trail.
The trail was very well defined and we never had directional doubts. Where other trails met/departed there was clear signage.

In my opinion, this would be the one must do stop when driving over the mountain. The views are excellent, there are multiple things to look at, and there are bathrooms. Everyone enjoys the views. You get some great photos without much effort.

Each vacation my family and I plan a day to visit Newfound Gap. We usually love to go when it's snowing and it's just breathtaking. The views are breathtaking during any season! If you continue on this will take you to North Carolina!

Can I park my car overnight at Newfound gap? I am planning on hiking to Clingman's dome and stay overnight at Mt.Collins Shelter on the way back. But I don't have a place to park my car other than Newfound gap. Please suggest me if there is a better option to park my car.

As long as the park is open then you can drive up to Newfound Gap. Theres a TN/NC side marker for pictures. There's also restrooms.

the answer you have received is totally accurate. I go up about 5 to 6 times a year. it is hard not to stop too as each time and season of the year has different perspectives from the same placement of view.
