The best picnic area in the Smoky Mountains. It's at a higher altitude (2,800 ft.) than the others and a stream with large boulders are scattered in it. It's great for wading but the water is cold. Plenty of spaces are available and the tables are large and clean. No fires are allowed except for charcoal in the grill. There are several restrooms scattered about as well.

The spot is awesome for picnicers. There are grills and river. Do not stray far from here. Take your trash with you.

Excellent spot to have a picnic and enjoy the Smoky Mountains. Picnic spots have tables and grills. Plenty of access to the River if you want to explore and get your feet (or more!) wet. We were lucky to find a spot, come early during peak season.

We spent the day here with our extended family. There’s plenty of picnic tables here and convenient restrooms. The parking was a small issue. We had 19 in our party and it was hard to fit all of our vehicles close to the same spot. We did make it work though. The view of the river is spectacular! Truly picnicking next to the river!
The river does have large rocks and seems great for older children. Our children played in a stream running down to the river because the rocks were too steep for our crew. We had 2,3,4,6, and 9 year olds with us. We went to Greenbriar last year and the river was a little easier for little people there verses here. It was still a great area and I would recommend

Great day at Chimneys! The bathrooms were clean and had soap and paper towels. The area was well taken care of, there was not trash and the picnic areas and tables were well maintained. We love having lunch by the water and relaxing to the sound of the mountain stream. It is truly our favorite place in the world!

I absolutely loved this area. Plenty of picnic areas spread out so that you can still feel like you have some privacy. It was June and hot in Gatlinburg, but nice hear under the shade of the old mountain canopy of trees. The bathrooms were clean.

We have utilized this picnic area on a few seperate occassions. Prior to hiking the Chimney Tops Trail we stopped here for a wonderful picnic lunch. It was a chilly day is the only draw back we had on this stop. It is wonderful to have bathroom facilities at this location. It was also nice to have clean spots to stop and have a picnic. If you have someone you love and want to impress, beit a date or a nice respite from the same old routine. Make an effort to pack a picnic lunch and take them here. Highly enjoyable and your loved one will give you high marks for the effort (at least if they are worthy of you :).
Another tip would be to come early and get a spot along the creek side. Any spot in here is wonderful but we love the ones with the water views.

The Chimneys picnic area.....is a nice picnic area by the river. Very cool area, so you can beat the summer heat and enjoy a nice lunch by the river.

We stopped here along our long drive from Charlotte to Wisconsin for a picnic lunch and it was one of my favorite stops along our drive. The area is gorgeous, and the picnic spots are all first come first served, with at least 1 parking slot at each area. Most of the spots have a charcoal grill if you're looking to hunker down for a minute. There are also bathrooms on site which was nice for making sure the kids were all good to go for another leg of our drive. The river next to the picnic area is gorgeous and the kids loved going down there to climb on the rocks, skip stones and get their toes wet. Awesome spot for sure.

The PERFECT picnic place. I could listen and watch the serene rushing waters all day long. The tables, grills, and restrooms in this idyllic setting are a gift to the people. Thank you!!

Hey Annsims; I'd say roughly 25 miles or so but the speed limit is lower so it may take 45 mins or more to get there. Totally worth it though!

I wanted to check and see if they rebuilt the bathroom facilities at Chimney Rock Picnic Area yet if they burned down at all.

Chimney Rock and the Chimneys are 2 completely different places. The Chimneys Picnic Area is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Chimney Rock is in North Carolina over 100 miles away. The Chimneys Picnic Area has recently reopened and so I am assuming the bathrooms are open as well.

So far there isn't a lot of details but the fire started there so I expect it is. They won't open the road to Gatlinburg till Friday and most of the forest area will be closed for some time. The fire is still burning.

According to the nps.gov website dogs are permitted in campgrounds, picnic areas and along roads. They must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. They are allowed on 2 short trails: Gatlinburg & oconaluftee river trail.
