Absolutely loved this trail. Mostly uphill, but not too steep, on the way to the falls. Following river and forest trails. When I went, around 8am, there was some foot traffic but it wasn’t busy. The falls are nice to see, and I saw some deer. Some other hikers had seen a bear near the top.

This trail is beautiful. It has a steady incline all the way to the falls. You pass other smaller falls on the way to the top. Dont stop at the first small falls, keep going around to Rainbow Falls. There is a sign posted so you know when you get there. People call it moderate to hard. I call it moderate just for the rocks and stumps. It is not hard if you are in decent shape.

This a fun hike with lots to see along the way. Make sure to pack water and be on the lookout for bears. We saw two on our hike. You really have to look to find the bears.

Just did this hike solo. It was about 7am in the morning and saw a bear in the road at the trailhead. About 50 yards into the walk saw a cub and momma bear coming down the trail. Then kept coming down the trail toward me and 3 other hikers as we kept backing up. They eventually went off into the woods. The trail somewhat strenuous. Wear hiking boots, saw some people in sandals. Got to the waterfall and decided to be adventurous and go another 4 miles to the lodge on top. The lodge is at the top of the mountain for awesome pictures. If you don’t wanna go to the lodge, go another mile and half and the trees open and will give you awesome views for pictures . The trail past the falls is pretty rough and not maintained as well as Alum Cave. Overall it was a great hike, took 6.5 hours up the mountain and back down.

This was an awesome experience, but you need to be physically fit to hike this trail to the falls. It took us 5 hours to hike to the falls and back. Bring water, energy bars, backpacks, and a paper map. You will lose cellphone coverage. Trekking Poles were nice to have.

Rainbow Falls/Gorges State Park hiking Adventure. Most Beautiful scenery. Decent hike to top of falls, moderate difficulty. Brought my sister here a few years after 2015 solo trip and she has minor asthmatic issues so we went slow, not recommended for persons with health issues. Only my experience, I have no medical, doctor/nursing training.

What a great experience 🤩! A magnificent landscape, a hike of medium difficulty, a very well maintained and easy to follow trail (even without a great sense of direction 😁) and the encounter with a bear 🐻 to top it all off. Well, the waterfalls lacked a little volume, but that's part of the magic of nature: the show is a little different every day. In any case, don't hesitate, go and visit this magnificent place 👍

When doing this trail you really have to hit it at the right time, when the sun is shining and there has been plenty of rain. It was neither of those when we went, but we only had one day to do it. The trail is pretty much straight up a mountain the whole way. Take your time, take plenty of water and snacks. It took us in total about 5 hours to hike. Anytime there is a waterfall it is worth the hike and this is another trail I can check off my list. We did see a bear on our way back down.

This was a tough hike for an out of shape 56 year old female. Very steep inclines, non-stop, don’t feel bad to take several breaks, you will need to! Breathtaking views of waterfalls were aplenty. It has made me want to start hiking wherever we go with out RV. This made me feel alive and gives me appreciation of beautiful important Mother Nature, awe-inspiring!! Bring water and a rain poncho! Chances are rain. 🌈

Hi, our family of 4 adults (experienced hikers) will be visiting the Smoky Mountains over Christmas break. We are planning to hike Rainbow Falls. For planning purposes, how long do you think it would take to complete the 5.5 miles?
(Note: I walk about 3.5 miles daily, and it takes me about 45 minutes, but not sure with the uphill how much time i should allow for this trail).

Hi - similar to yourself, I walk around 5 miles per day and when we planned the Rainbow Falls hike it did take longer than expected. It probably took us about 90 minutes up and around 60 minutes down. This was mainly because it is uphill for a lot of the hike (and of course we kept stopping to enjoy the wonderful forest that you're hiking through). We hiked here in September and so the heat also slowed us down. I'm not sure what sort of weather you can expect in this area in December so please check that the hike and the roads are safe and accessible. And have fun...!!

What's your opinion about taking a 5-year-old on this, or part of this trail? Are there worthy stops along the way that serve as a good ending point? Or, is there a "must get to spot" at the end? 3 hours for adults = 4+ with a 5yo, I'm guessing.

This trail starts out along a creek but then diverges into the forest with lots of switchbacks. I was just there about 3 or 4 months ago and it was our 2nd time to the falls. The first time we took the hike our youngest was 5 or 6. She made it most of the way without being carried. That being said it is a very tedious and bland hike most of the way and there really isn't much to see past the beginning until you get to the falls themselves. Also there are lots and lots of rocks and boulders you have to climb over on the way up. I would opt for Laurel Falls which is partially paved though it does get narrow with a steep drop off nearer to the top. We took our kids on that hike when they were very young and there are lots of parents with smaller kids on that hike; it's a shorter hike and the falls are much better.
