I absolutely love Joshua Tree National Park, on my last of my many visits (4/30/23), we hiked Barker Dam - very simple and quick (about a little over a mile) and did some scrambling until it is time to just sit back and relax to enjoy the beautiful sunset in this magnificent National Park. This trail is very doable especially to those who wanted to explore without being overwhelmed by the ginormous rocks to climb over, the steps to cross over the rocks are very well maintained and the views are nothing but spectacular. About half mile to the trail, you'll see an empty dam and a very interesting water trough, a quarter mile to the trails end, you'll find some interesting and beautiful Petroglyphs (and maybe some lizards) from times past, I am so glad these were preserved as it adds to the wonders and mystique of Joshua Tree.

There are no bad views to enjoy the sunset in JT, if you get there at the right time of day depending on the season too - you'll have a front seat view of the most amazing sunset you'll ever see in your life, how it colors the desert, its vegetation and how the light prisms affect every boulder and rock, is an experience you won't forget for the rest of your life.

Be responsible and help protect and preserve this beautiful National Park, take out what you bring in, yes even that piece of gum you have in your mouth right now, there is nothing more disgraceful than to see how we humans can be the boil that really ruins the beauty and gift of nature by leaving your trash behind - and to the vandals, not just the spray can morons, yes even if you who only use rocks to desecrate the boulders and rocks, etching your name for some selfish reason. Shame on you for ruining such a magnificent gift of nature not just for us at the present but also for future generations.

This is a place where rainwater naturally collects because of the rock formations forming a bit of a bowl. Ranchers built a small dam many years ago at one end to keep more water in. There is almost always some water here, but can be very limited and stagnant in summer months. Best time to visit is after a good rain. It’s rare, but I have twice seen a herd of bighorn sheep here seeking the water. They also like to like the salt from the ground as the water recedes. The bighorn have apparently gotten used to the presence of humans as they show little fear.

It was generally a pretty hike though the dam itself was a big disappointment, nothing like the picture shown at the top of the page on Tripadvisor. I added my picture to show the difference. We were there on a very sunny day, so that's not the cause for the difference. Overall though, we did see many interesting rock formations, it was really fun to see the different shapes the Joshua trees take on as they grow, and the mountains were beautiful.

If you start the loop going to the right from the parking lot, there is a spot just past the dam that is definitely moderate, not easy. It is very narrow, requires climbing across rocks, and there is a several yard steep drop off on one side. It is very short, but people did go in and out the same way rather then doing the loop to avoid this part. If you do the trail as an in and out, the walk is longer but you get to enjoy the lovely scenery from a different angle and and it's easy walk the other way around to see most of the rest of the trail so you really miss almost nothing. We also went to see the petroglyphs which were a disappointment as they were painted. We (perhaps mistakenly) thought we were going to see actual petroglyphs.

This walk is moderate in my opinion, the middle bit is over some boulders but doable. The dam itself is a bit of a disappointment, it’s a piece of concrete walling and not a drop of water in sight, maybe there is in winter. Scenery is beautiful.

An easy walk with a few steps and rocks to climb over but provides a great way to see the unique flora of the area. Trail is not well marked but easy to follow as many people have been through the area. We were fortunate to be there while the Joshua trees were in bloom.

A good hike for all ages. Most of the path is flat, wide, sandy. Near the dam the trail goes over rocks, boulders, becomes a bit slippery in parts. Easy does it! I feel that this is the most popular hike in Joshua Tree NP. Restrooms available. Parking areas right there. Petroglyphs are near the end of the path and easily seen.

A trail that is 1.1 miles long, on the most part the route is flat easy walking over a sandy/ gravelly path with small signs to read along the way.

However when you reach the dam area then you do need to walk / step up over boulders rocks / rock steps. For most this would be very easy but if you have mobility issues then this part would be more difficult.

There are loads of Joshua trees in the area ( loads in the park!)
The Rock formations will have you wondering what the shape is they are making, on the whole an interesting landscape.

Native American petroglyphs a short distance from the end of the trail. Signposted and easy to see.

No water in the dam on 25th feb! Surprisingly given the rain in recent days

A beautiful area, even though there was almost no water in the pond when we visited. Be sure to see the "Disney petroglyphs", native American petroglyphs that were painted over and "enhanced" by filmmakers in the early 60s.

This trail is often described as "easy", but it includes many rock stairs and uneven rocky areas. If you have lower-joint mobility issues like I do, you may need help from a companion or at least a good walking stick.

This is nothing special when there is no water in the dam. You can see all the trees and rocks from many other areas in the park that are not so crowded. The walk is not strenuous, except it is a long way from the overflow car park.

If it’s not a sunny day, and if it hasn’t rained recently, I suggest you skip this one!

I categorized this as a family focused trail since it is relatively short and flat; but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of variety and good views.
