The two times after 1997 I could visit Joshua Tree National Park! The park is truly unique and is home to a host of cacti and great rock formations! Visit the Cholla Cactus Garden at the beginning and was heavily impressed! Parking is very limited and even in November I had to park "wildly" on the street! In high season, avoid Friday and Saturday!

I love this place. It is like an out of the world scenery! One feels like it is another planet that we have arrived at. It was just amazing to see the whole place filled with this cactus plant. It is a unique experience to be surrounded by this special plant.

In the Pinto Basin of Joshua Tree, where the Colorado desert morphs into the Mojave, you’ll find thousands of “teddy bear” cholla cacti thriving! They may look soft and cuddly but they’re quite hazardous - designed to spike into skin and fur to hitch a ride in order to propagate!
This reproductive tendency to easily snap off pieces at the stem and travel has earned these cacti another nickname - “jumping cholla” lol. Luckily, the NPS works hard to keep the trails through the garden well maintained - allowing us to explore and meander the 10 acres without getting poked and spiked!
Some of the teddy bear cholla towered over me by at least a foot! And the surrounding area is all mountains in the distance so it’s definitely worth a visit. The sunsets here are often dramatic with lots of interesting photo angles and opportunities. The cacti themselves are beautiful with their rich brown stems gradually blending into the pastel green of their crowns. And in the spring they have great big greenish blooms.
There’s plenty of paved parking at the trailhead and it’s easy to find - right off one of the main roads so you really can’t miss it. I’d say it’s definitely a must see in the park.
Entry to the national park has a fee but there’s lots to see and do. They have plenty of visitors centers, other nearby bathrooms, and picnic spots. Cell and WiFi signal is very lacking in the park - plan ahead and download and offline maps you may need.

A beautiful garden where you can really spend some time. It's a bit tricky to find the walking paths in between the cacti, as the paths are not very clear/visible. After some time you just get that it's up to you to decide where you want to walk and how far inside of the garden do you want to get.

A rather incredible garden, which presents many perspectives and allows to learn more about this strange cactus!

I find it odd that in a national park named for a plant, it is another plant that tops the list of attractions, and it is appropriate. Nearly everything I read about JTNP mentioned the Cholla Garden as something you should visit, but nowhere other than Tripadvisor is it ranked as high.
I loved the garden, and it was a highlight for nearly everyone in our group. We were first introduced to the Teddy Bear Cholla when we visited Big Bend NP and Saguaro NP. It is a beautiful yet very sticky plant, perhaps the clingiest of all cacti. It is beautiful in its colors especially when back lit by the sun. We visited late in the afternoon as I had heard they were most vibrant at that time. It was a magical visit, see the pictures.
There are cholla throughout the park but nowhere are they as abundant and ubiquitous as here in the Pinto Basin of the Colorado Desert. The entire eastern half of the park is the Colorado Desert, yet outside of the Cholla Garden there are few attractions here and NO Joshua Trees.
Still for our group of 12, everyone was impressed by the cholla, perhaps more than the Joshua Trees that name the park. It is an easy walk and aside from a run in with the cactus, there is little challenge. I highly recommend you plan time to visit this especially late in the day. You will be rewarded with one of the best treats in JTNP, another plant stealing the spotlight.

This stop in Joshua Tree National park was well worth it! The cholla cactus are sharp, so be careful! You also need to watch your step for the animals that have amazing camouflage! You might catch a glimpse of the collared lizard while you're out there. You should also look for the incredible structure that support the cholla cactus. Nature is amazing!

I was here early in the morning. It was nice and cool out. I walked the path which was easy to follow. Amazing desert plants. It’s worth seeing.

Well worth the extra dive to experience this place. It's not too crowded, and you can be alone to enjoy the place.
Just don't touch them! We saw a woman limping out because she brushed her sneaker against one and could not walk. Thankfully, the park has pliers by the sign to pull the barbs out.

It doesn't make much of a difference here because you are in between two mountain ranges and down in the valley. You likely wont see much of either the sunrise or sunset at this location directly.
