We did this section of the cave as part of the river styx tour and I thought it was the best part! I had no idea if I was claustrophobic or not but I was ok. It takes 5-10 minutes and was a completely unique experience. My husband had a “10 second freak out” that he told me about later but he had a lot of fun too. The river styx tour is listed as moderate but we were fine (40s, in shape) and the 72 year old in our group made it out a few minutes after us. The stairs at the end weren’t as bad as I thought they’d be. Can’t wait to do the grand avenue tour tomorrow.

I am of average weight, and although I may have had to crouch down or I may have had to walk sideways, I had no issues with my cave navigation. This tour is not for those without good mobility. I just went slowly and I had no issues.

Actually not too hard to get through, just a lengthy (about 40 feet or so) trail that you have to turn sideways and manuever through. The narrow path is only about 2 to 3 feet high and wasn't difficult to get through.

Short part of the tour, it’s hyped up more than it needs to be. It’s narrow but very easy to navigate. Don’t worry if your overweight just enjoy.

Everyone in these reviews is like "if you're fat, skip this you'll be miserable" Well I'm a fat woman, who holds most of my weight in my hips and butt (which is exactly where it's tight), but still very much enjoyed this tour. The only thing I didn't enjoy was my fear prior to doing the tour because I was convinced I wouldn't fit. Yes, it's slow going and a tight fit, but even at my size, there was room around me and I didn't feel claustrophobic. I heard more complaining from the tall guys in Tall Man's Agony than from anyone going through Fat Man's Misery.

If you are fat --you will be miserable on this tour. Go on one of the shorter and less restrictive size tours.

We enjoyed the History of Mammoth Cave Your when half way through we got to the Fat Man’s Misery. Besides the cave being about 28 inches wide and narrow, the ceiling was low. I am 5’3 size 6; and had to hunch over and walk sideways at some points. Children had an easier time here.

This is certainly a crowd favorite of Mammoth Cave since the cave opened 200 years ago. It is an experience like no other at Mammoth or for that matter any cave. Most of Mammoth's passageways are just that Mammoth. However, in this small section you will twist and turn through some of the tightest sections. For the most part the tightness is only waist down but it is narrow enough that you will be touching both sides of the passage.
In fact, this is one of the few places, you are allowed to touch the caves. Any spelunker knows touch the cave as little as possible to prevent impact from humans. However, here you have two hundred years of finger print formations that are truly part of the cave experience. For me this is a MUST DO, especially if you have children with you. They will love this section.
Again it is the fun part of the tour and the part your party will be talking about long after you leave Mammoth Cave NP. It is a cave Must See.

The walk through very tight thigh high spaces, as the guide said, is something you either hate or love. I hated it since I would have rather not passed through several long minutes of tight space between rocks touched by many people during a pandemic. I also do not like low ceilings and due to my height, it felt extra tight. My husband and son however loved every minute.

So it's only really bad in two little tiny turns, the rest is low and narrow, but you can do it.
By the time you are thinking about freaking out, you are out - and in the big open area where the bathrooms are - Easy Peasy!

Hi. We are going in late summer and would like to do Fat Man's Misery. What tour should we book because I don't see it listed. Thanks.

The Historic tour was one of the tours we did and you go through Fat Man’s Misery. Do make reservations in advance because all of the tours sell out very fast. Enjoy your trip.

My family (husband and I and 2 sons - 16 and 14) is planning on visiting Mammoth Caves in early August we're trying to decide which tour to take. My husband is slightly claustrophobic (if stuck in a tight spot for an extended time frame) and has back issues on and off. I see the Fat Man's Misery is on the Historic Tour, so that's probably out. Are there tight / twisty spots on the Domes and Dripstones Tour as well? That looks like the better option for us, but we'd be interested in other's thought.

This historic tour didn't bother my claustrophobic husband, but he did hit his head a couple of time through the low ceiling areas. My husband and I are in our 60's. the biggest challenge of this tour was walking up the tower which is several stories of steel stairs at once. We had to stop about 3 times. This moderate trip is at the high end of moderate I would say. Need to make reservation a month early to get an easy tour. We enjoyed it but having been to Carlsbad Caverns several times this tour was not near as pretty.
