This is by far the most popular and challenging trail in the Paradise area of the park. The views go from subalpine, alpine, to beautiful meadows with flowers and valleys with streams and waterfalls. It is a popular trail no matter the weather and although the weather wasn't ideal, it was still an enjoyable experience despite the rain and the cold. I would first suggest making sure you are comfortable with the elevation gain. Take a pack with plenty of water, snacks, and layers for temperature variations as it can change quickly. Saw mostly adults and young adults on this trail. I did see two families and the children were miserable. I would not suggest this hike for children it is simply too much for them.

.....becoming children, then that often has something to do with the weather - in our specific case it had snowed heavily again at the end of May 2024, so that we were only able to walk the skyline trail starting at the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center "beginning" (i.e. after about 2 hours of ascent we left the power a little bit in deep snow - without snowshoes there was no getting through and the avalanche danger could not be estimated).

But: we saw many - like children - great adults in the snow and the experience alone was worth it!

One of the best hikes my family has ever done! Not an easy one, but worth every step. The views are spectacular at every moment, you won’t believe somewhere this beautiful exists!

This hike is absolutely gorgeous and lush. Highly recommend! The meadows were overflowing with flowers, bold chipmunks and marmots dashed across the trail within feet of us, and the glaciers on Mt. Rainer felt so close I could touch them. On a less smoky day than when we went, I imagine you could see all the surrounding peaks as well.

TLDR for below: Go counterclockwise around the loop and wear true hiking gear. It's about 7 miles total factoring in the walk from the farthest parking lot. Don't hike this loop in jeans or sandals. Bring a windbreaker and layers, it's chilly and windy at Panorama Point.

---

Route notes:
This hike definitely has a "best" way to do the loop: follow the trail map for the Skyline loop going counterclockwise. To avoid some of the harder spots, take the Golden Gate shortcut on the way up to shave off some of the mileage.

(The route I did was from Myrtle Falls up to Sluiskin Falls and then to Panorama Point. Panorama Point is a great place to stop to rest, enjoy the view, and have a snack before resuming. Then descend on the route that passes Glacier Vista and Alta Vista.)

The first half of the hike going counterclockwise is a lot of elevation gain with rocky and muddy paths. The ground is slippery from all the melt-water, so it is MUCH easier to traverse going up than down.

A lot of clockwise hikers seemed surprised at how strenuous the portion past Panorama Point was. The trail signs don't say this so I will: if you do the loop clockwise, the first half is a very steep but fairly straightforward uphill walk on a paved/stepped path. It's drastically different from the more rugged part of the trail that comes later.

This could lull anyone into a false sense of security that the other half of the loop is going to also be that well paved and accessible when it is not.

The only downside to going counterclockwise is that the paved descent at the end is STEEP (and I mean maybe like a 70 degree angle steep). The last 10 minutes of this hike hurt my knees, shins, and hips far more than the ascent.

We were shocked to trudge through as much as we did on a hot day in July, but this was a magnificent hike. Our 10 year-old granddaughter fared well, but her sneakered-feet got wet. Great views of Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams about 1/4 mile below Glacier Vista. Truly an awe-inspiring hike. Given time constraints and reports of icier conditions further up the trail, we opted for an out-and-back.

Perfect timing to be able to hike the trail but still can trample on snow if you want. Bring a pair of poles to help traverse on those slippery patches.

Views of snow capped peaks with alpine trees and occasional waterfalls just can't be more beautiful. Wildflowers in bloom right now include white and yellow avalanche-lilies, pink mountain heath, golden cinquefoil, and alpine pasqueflower.

This is the number 1 rated hike in the state of Washington by AllTrails and one of the most amazing hikes in the NPS. We woke up early on our second day at the park after spending the night at Paradise Inn and hiked this trail. The weather was great and we could see the peak the entire time. By the end of the trail, the sun had come out and the meadows were magical. Whether looking out at 3 other volcanic Cascades, Adams, Hood (in Oregon) and St. Helen's, from Panorama Point or viewing the glaciers and peak from below, this hike is amazing.

At 5.7 miles and 1,700 vertical feet, we were able to hike it in the morning and still return and shower before check out at Paradise Inn. In addition to the views, we also had numerous wildlife experiences, both deer and marmot within feet of the trail. Again this is an amazing trail that you must make a priority for your visit. The only tip I will give you is to plan flexibility in your visit so you can hike this trail with your best weather. You really want to be able to see the mountain and the views when you hike here.

The National Park itself was a beautiful site. We were there during October and we could see all the wonderful changing colors of the trees and shrubs moving into fall. The view of Mount Rainier was breathtaking, and it contrasted well with the colorful foliage. We hiked the Skyline Trail, and I have to say it should be rated as "difficult", as it was over 8 miles long. If you go in the clockwise direction on the trail, you'll immediately begin with a very steep trail which will go on for about 4 miles. The trail starts off as a asphalt paved path, then turns into crush gravel and later into granite steps. Eventually, you're walking on small rocks and dirt/sand, and through small streams. I saw people hiking the trail wearing sneakers, sandals, and I saw one woman wearing Ugg boots. I would recommend you wear hiking boots if you plan to hike the entire trail. This trail was very challenging to myself, wife, and teenage son, mainly because of high vertical distance gain (and the mile high altitude didn't help). Note, that if you start off going counterclockwise on the Skyline Trail and on your way back decide you're too tired and want to take a shortcut back to the parking lot, You can divert off to the Golden Gate trail which is a 1 mile hike back to the visitor center. Also, the famous vault toilet at Panorama Point that is mentioned in the NPS website was closed when we hiked in October, and it looked like it was closed for a while. So, there is no restroom facilities on the Skyline trail once you leave the visitor center.

Note, that the parking lot at the visitor center fills up very fast, so plan to arrive at 7 am to beat the crowd.

Skyline Trail would not be an especially challenging trail but for the fact that it is covered in snow, even in late June. And since the trail traverses steep hills and cliffs, a slip or a misstep can be a big problem. Hiking boots were barely sufficient and I wished I had poles or spiked shoes. The trail itself provides magnificent views of Mt. Rainier and the surrounding mountain ranges, picturesque Myrtle Falls, and wildlife viewing (I saw mountain goats and marmots). This is Mt. Rainier's most popular trail for a reason, and it's highly advisable to get there to start before 10 am when the crowds arrive.

We were here in June and a lot of this trail was still covered in snow. It is worth every second of work you will put in to get the the highest viewpoint. You will also need to be able to navigate being off trail, because of the snow. Be sure to have micro spikes for your shoes and also hiking poles.
