Snow Hike
The trail was 90% snow covered and we were mostly post-holing on the return trip after arriving at Lake Helene. The trail was impossible to follow as it disappeared many times in the snow. We ended up on the opposite side of the forest/hills as the trail and had to make our way across many snow covered landscapes. It was cold and adventurous but, as always, we had a fantastic time as a family. Great experience for us...but would not be for many.

Beautiful Lake
Lake Helene is a beautiful high elevation alpine lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. It is about 3 miles from Bear Lake trailhead. We visited on a shuttle hike from Bear Lake to Fern Lake. From Bear Lake, follow Flattop Mountain Trail for a mile to a split and then bear right to hike towards Odessa Lake. Just before Lake Helene is Two Rivers Lake, which is definitely worth a stop. The side paths to both lakes are unmarked so pay attention. The trail drops down into Odessa Gorge, right after Lake Helene. We saw a moose across the lake when we stopped. High above the lake is Notchtop Mountain and Flattop Mountain, with Ptarmigan Point in between.

Really enjoyed this area

I really enjoyed the views of Flattop and Notchtop Mountains. You hike along side them. Lake Helene sits back in where the two meet and a waterfall comes off a glacier. I have seen some Moose and Marmot in here. Very beautiful.
I did the thru hike from Bear Lake TH to Fern Lake TH. Its a 9 mile thru hike with 3 waterfalls and 4 Lakes. The scenery is outstanding, the hike is awesome. Its 2 miles uphill and then 7 down. This hike is a must see.

Wonderful hike
My daughter and I took the advice of the Park Ranger at Bear Lake trailhead and enjoyed this moderately difficult hike.

VERY snow covered fun hike on this late May day.

You park in the Bear Lake parking lot and start around the lake until the trail forks off to the right a time or two. There was still a LOT of snow there back in the later part of May so you needed to be prepared. I'm wondering just how long parts of the trial stayed covered in snow? At points you were able to look down under a pine and see the actual trail about 4' lower! The 'winter' trail is at times hard to follow and probably longer then what I did on my last visit. Still had great views and parts early on had no snow and still the rocky trail where you should watch your step so you don't twist an ankle or something. It is a wonderful hike of about 4 miles one way if I recall. Great views along the way and at the lake.

A great place to unwind and have a picnic. Does not require big money to visit which is a plus for a tourist area. Highly recommend.
