Took this one day after a ranger talk in the adjacent General Grant Tree area. A fire in recent years has marred the scenery and there are few sequoia trees and no signage or points of interest provided by the NPS. Also a horse trail so that can muck it up a bit, and horses passed me on my hike. The trail descends a bit into a valley so some up and down. I would recommend Big Trees, Hazelwood, General Grant, General Sherman, Congress, Lost Creek, John Muir Grove among others before taking this hike.

This is a much lesser known hike right next to the General Grant Tree Trail. The entrance is in the overflow parking lot for the General Grant trail. There’s a closed gate so it may look like the trail is closed off but it’s not, it’s definitely open. Just enter the trail around the gate. The sign for the loop itself is kinda small and you could almost miss it so I included pictures to help.

The North Grove Loop is almost 2 miles long total and takes you past some gorgeous meadows and sequoia clusters. You also get to see some fallen giants. It was so peaceful - hardly any people and no car or other noise, which is a nice break in California lol!

There are several different trails that branch off the North Grove Loop. We did the Dead Giant Loop also and the Sequoia Lake overlook. With all these add-ons, it’s about a 3.25 mile hike total. I HIGHLY recommend you add these! We were all alone on this trail and the scenery is absolutely stunning!

The signs for the Dead Giant Loop are easy to spot. There’s no sign for the Sequoia Lake one, but it kinda just flows on from the Dead Giant Loop and it’s so small and flat it almost seems like it’s just part of the Dead Giant Trail.

All these trails are relatively easy hikes. My son is just out of the Marines and he had no issues at all. I’m moderately out of shape (I walk about 2 miles a day and do stairs too) and I found it mostly easy. There are some inclines that I had to take a few breaks on, but not as much as the General Sherman Tree hike. The views of Sequoia Lake were incredible! You’ll be so glad you did it!

I added this trail onto my hike to see the General Sherman Tree. This crowd was signifcantly less populated, but still had several Sequoia with much more elevation. In addition, there were these wonderful blue birds that captured my attention. I tried to capture a picture, but they were just too quick. I would reccomend to add this hike to your route when you go see the General Sherman to get more miles in and get away from the crowds.

This trail extends from the General Grant tree. It follows a trail heavily used by horses which have rutted the trail and littered it with manure.

Did the north grove loop trail, after visiting the General Grant tree. Nice short hike. Some evidence of recent forest fires.

This is not a busting hike, but it is a nice way to get acquainted with the territory and find some beautiful stands of trees. A good hike to start with on your stay.

Nice trail which tkes you north of the Grant Tree and away from most of the crowds. Take your time and enjoy the view of giants.

This was recommended by the visitor centre and we were given a guide describing the route.
Starts at Grant tree lower car park (bus parking) and not sure we could've followed it correctly without the guide.
It's a lovely, easy walk and you can see how some of the fires have affected these trees, amazing that many of them still survive. You can also link to the Dead Giant loop (keep an eye peeled for the signs as very easy to miss). We did both at a relaxed pace and with photos in about 2.5 hours

From the trail description we felt this would make a pleasant relatively short circular walk. Soon after the start of the walk the trail was signed in two directions. We followed the direction indicated on the map and expected to come to a meadow relatively quickly. We didn't come across a meadow and there did not seem to be any sign that one was anywhere near. Yes, there were a fair number of fine Sequoias about, but the general feel of the forest was gloomy and foreboding. We passed a couple of tracks leading off the track we were on but saw no further signage. We were not enjoying the walk and were not certain we were on the correct circular trail so we decided to play safe and turn back.
