Awesome cave! Very different than "normal" caves. The candlelight part was just an added bonus! I go on this tour every time I'm in the area (like 5 or so times!)

The park ranger did an awesome job on the tour and it was nice being able to take it with such a small group of people versus the 40 people we saw on the regular tour. It was also very cool going further into the cave where we were able to use our little lanterns to explore as they did long ago. The history was very interesting and I would definitely recommend this. My children are 11 and 9 and they were really into the tour! It is two hours and it goes by fast. It also books up extremely fast. I called the morning of the first day we could book and the first of two tours had already been fully booked. Book as early as you can as it is worth the experience. Parking was easy as the tour starts at the visitor center. You will need gloves and, know this, we brought our own. That being said, they do provide gloves to those who don't have them, but I didn't see any child sizes.

My daughter and I did the candlelight tour in Wind Cave. We made a reservation ahead of time. We chose this tour because we thought it would be an adventure and we were not disappointed. It was slightly challenging, but is not strenuous for anyone that is able-bodied. We liked it for the adventure and to explore beyond the typical cave tour. In my opinion, if you want to SEE things on an easy tour then go to Jewel Cave. If you want to DO things then do the Candlelight tour or Wild Cave tour at Wind Cave.

This is my second time doing this tour and we loved every minute of it. We took my in-laws this time and they loved it. They aren't in perfect shape, but I would not say that it was overly strenuous for them and they had a great time. One of the best parts about this tour is that they accept reservations and you are in a small group, unlike some of the other non-reservable tours that are in larger groups.

I feel a little guilty giving just an "average" rating to a tour experience so many others have rated so highly; but my wife and I found the Candelight Cave Tour experience to be OK/good - and not amazing.
Wind Cave is impressive in its size, but the formations one sees, while very interesting, are not as dramatic/striking as those you can see in many other caves around the country (perhaps we're jaded from seeing several other impressive caves). It seems one of Wind Cave's claims to fame is "boxwork" formations - with 90% of the world's boxwork found just in Wind Cave. However, the boxwork formations are the only "dramatic" formation one seems to see on the Candlelight Tour (or the Natural Entrance tour). And while the boxwork is interesting, we missed seeing the variety of formations one sees in other cave tours. After looking at boxwork for 20 minutes, there are diminishing returns from seeing it (and no other dramatic types of formations) for another 60 minutes.
Recreating the experience of early cave explorers - seeing the cave by candlelight - is very fun; but, again, we felt there were diminishing returns after the first 20 minutes. Because the candelight is weak, you can't really see the boxwork as well as you can on the normal tours. We both felt like the optimal experience would have been to do the "normal" [lit] cave tour for an hour or so and then have one 10-20 minute segment for which you picked up and used candles.
The tour guide did a great job talking about the history of the cave - although we had picked up much/most of that history form the visitors' center and from taking the Natural Entrance cave tour earlier.
We both felt like the Jewel Cave tour was the more impressive/spectacular tour in the area - and would both strongly recommend a cave tour there if you only have time for one cave tour.
Perhaps the issue was that the other reviews for the Candelight Tour that we had read here or elsewhere had built up our expectations too highly.
I'll also note that I hope this "average" review doesn't deter anyone in the area from at least exploring the above-ground portion of Wind Cave National Park, with some fine scenery, good hikes, and fun wildlife viewing opportunities (bison, antelope, and prairie dogs, in particular).

You need to call and make a reservation for the candlelight tour 30 days prior to your visit and this was one call that was well worth making.
The tour requires sturdy, closed toed shoes, long pants, a jacket and gloves (though gloves are available if needed). Nothing else can be brought into the cave - no cell phones, no water, no food, no purses/backpacks, etc. and this is to protect the natural beauty of the cave and the fact that you will be walking & climbing through areas that are not paved with walkways.
We expected that "candlelight" now meant we would receive a battery operated lantern but instead were pleasantly surprised to get a metal bucket and a candle. It was amazing the amount of light they gave off.
Our tour guide was full of information about the cave system, the Lakota people native to the area and the history of the caves discovery.
This is one tour I would recommend you do not miss!

This tour was very informational and interesting. I have enjoyed many cave tours around the world, but this cave especially has many unique geological structures and historical characters. It was not a difficult walk. It lasted just over a couple hours. The tour guides, Taylor and Betsy, did a phenomenal job entertaining us with fun facts and captivating stories. It was fun to view the cave from the perspective of the first explorers via candlelight. Do make a reservation because they fill up quickly. It is especially ideal if you are in the area on a rainy day, because the cave is dry and stays at the same temperature. Highly recommend!

We went with 11 yr old and 14 yr old and really enjoyed it. It was very different than the caves we've seen in ky and tn. The formations were beautiful and unique. Cave was drier than I expected. The tour guide was good. It was strenuous for about half: narrow, slippery. Stairs weren't bad.

Our family of 4 did this tour the week of July 4 - we were able to make reservations up to the week of.. I very much appreciated the ability to make the reservation. All of us, including the 9 year old, had our own candle which was very easy to manipulate. The beginning of the tour takes you through the areas that everyone sees on other tours, complete with expansive rooms showing the boxwork formation. Then, your smaller tour goes into unlit areas (you have your candles) while telling you more of the history of the cave. The hike itself is not too bad, there were times we were going down on our bottoms holding on.
The tour was well worth our time, my only wish was that we had a more experienced guide. Our guide was friendly and personable, but she admitted to us she was a "summer intern" and had been in the area less than 2 months, and had never been inside any cave previous to this summer. Just my two cents, but I would have preferred a guide with a little more experience and depth in their knowledge.
One note is our family did this tour, in addition to the lantern tour at Jewel Cave. We debated and debated which one to do, and ultimately just did both. We were happy we did this, as each cave is unique in its own right.

They advise that people who are claustrophobic not take this tour. How "tight" is it in the cave and would someone who just doesn't like to be in really, really close quarters have an issue? (Note: I've been on other cave tours before and haven't had a problem; however, the ranger I spoke with sounded like the entire tour was in small spaces.)
