This hike is no longer accessible from Zion Park. To get to Observation Point, we went to Zion Ponderosa Ranch and took a shuttle (paid, you can book online) which took us to the starting point of the trail that leads to Observation Point. The hike itself is not extraordinary, we mainly cross a pine forest, the end is more difficult because there is a difference in altitude in full sun. The reward is at the end with this extraordinary view. The shuttle passes every half hour at the trailhead for a return to Ponderosa ranch.

We have hiked this the hard way in the past [now inaccessible] and have also done the easier way that is now the only option. The view from the top always takes my breath away. Only the Grand Canyon south rim and parts of Yosemite compares to this view. We heard the parking lot at the trailhead filled up from early morning so nearly didn’t bother. We went on a Monday and arrived about 3pm - there was one car in the parking lot and we passed a couple of people on the way out but had the place to ourselves at the top and we were there half an hour. It is the best view in the park, possibly in the whole area, if you’ve never been you should take a look.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the hike to Observation Point. While a 7 mile hike roundtrip, its doable. We highly recommend this excursion because the pay off is worth it!

This places is currently either number #2 or #6 of things to do in Zion depending on what page you look at on TA. It is very good! You can’t hike the narrows right now and I have been unable to get a permit to Angels Landing so I can’t compare to those but it is much higher up than Angels Landing so it might be better.
Pros:
- Low traffic, right now zion adventures only brings about 20 people there per hour and parking is limited so it really doesn’t get that crowded. And it is not hard to get a shuttle ticket, I was able to get the last spot at 11am on the night before but it seemed like there were a good number of spots. Hopefully it stays this way.
- Not strenuous or dangerous compared to angels landing. This is a fairly easy hike. I think it is 700 feet of elevation across the trip according to AllTrails
- options to make it more strenuous, I turned it into an 11+ mile hike to east rim and back to the resort and this added another 1300 feet of elevation
- the views are still amazing, felt as picturesque as what I’d seen of angels landing
Cons:
- getting to the ponderosa resort was quite far for me, about 80 minute drive from where I was staying, but you will have limited options to get this view, either pray for the lottery to help you or hike a very out of the way route
- parking is limited if you try to do this without a shuttle. You could hike from the resort but that would double the route to about 14 miles, half of that would be pretty boring
- the old trail from within the park is still closed indefinitely

I did this hike ten days ago. It is not doable from the Weeping Rock trailhead due to rock fall. We did it from east side. 4x4 is needed to get to the trailhead due to winter conditions. It was worth it, we almost had trail for ourselves. We only ecountered few people. Views from the top were as good as ever.

I would say that this is one of the bucket list hikes in the park. Spectacular views (very much like a Grand Canyon type of view) . Angels Landing is in the foreground when you're at the point. Weather was perfect at this time of year (October & also in April). Other times of year can be very hot or cold.

Easy hike from the east side of the park by Zion Ponderosa. This overlook is actually higher than angels landing and allows you to see the entire valley. Our visit was early Nov which is not too hot or cold.

Spectacular Scenery! Good food at the Lodge / had breakfast & lunch there. Best to arrive as early as possible: at the crack of dawn, if you can, otherwise parking is a nightmare. We arrived around 7am, had plenty of parking, then unloaded our rented electric bicycles at the canyon junction for easy & awesome rides at our own pace, stopping whenever & where ever we wanted. Thereby totally avoiding the shuttle buses which are so irritating (wait times, crazy crowds, sharing germs, & RUDE bus drivers). Downside: IF you want to call anyone or share pics while in the canyon: NO cell service & NO internet service! Not even at the Lodge! Even wi-fi calling wasn't working. So if you have a medical or a family emergency, good luck with communicating that at all !! Summary: Zion is the #2 most popular park in the USA, so avoid it on weekends or on any Holiday, ARRIVE EARLY, & by biking you can avoid the otherwise mandatory shuttle buses !!

Perfect spot to take pictures of the canyon. I did it quite early to avoid the hot temperatures because there are few places with shadow

Planning on doing Observation Point via East Mesa for Sunrise (arrive at OP at around 8am to give the sun enough time to paint the walls) and doing The Narrows starting at 12-1 pm. Is this too much/unrealistic for 1 day?

Hi, the website says that the shuttle stop 7 is closed due to landslide, what are the alternative to reach observation point?
Even once the shuttle stop is reopened, you still can't hike to Observation Point from there. The trail to Observation Point is itself closed, due to a separate, earlier landslide. There is no schedule for reopening.
The alternative requires an hour drive from Springdale to an area east of the park, going on some small private roads, and eventually a dirt road. The dirt road is generally decent, but can be impassible when wet. This gets you to the East Mesa trailhead. The trail is easier than the bottom up hike, but not as interesting (although once you get near Observation Point, it's of course excellent).

Does anybody know if the trail is still closed, or if the alternative is worth doing? I read on several places that it's blocked by rocks, but that there's another way up. We aren't sure if it's what we want to do, since the main trail had so many other stops we wanted to get to as well. Did anyone take the East Mesa Trail up?
I don't know if this answer is too late but the hiking "alternative" might be Observation Point or Angels Landing. The latter being a bit more strenuous and time consuming. It was an all day hike for us & we're in pretty good shape. LOL Observation Point might be less "stomach churning" if heights are an issue. ;-)

Any idea how long the trail to Observation Point will be closed? How difficult is it to find the backway to it?

Heard Observation point is closed. We are headed up next week. The website says it is closed from weeping rock. Isn't there another way to get up to the point? thanks

Just found out there was a rock fall that closed off the Observation Point trail.

Good morning, I need your help, I plan to visit this park but I am very afraid of heights and I have vertigo, so I am thinking that maybe it is not the best park to visit. Is there a nice route that does not have to walk on precipices?

I have hired the shuttle to drop us off at the trailhead of the East Mesa Trail. We are going to hike to Observation Point and then down the canyon back into the Park. My question is this: is this section of trail marked well? Thanks

Hi,
We would like to visit Zion at the end of March. We have time for 2 days. Are the views at Angel's landing and at Observation point comparable? Or 'do you have' to do both? Thanks!
I think what you see is very similar. From observation point you are higher and looking right at Angels landing. So, from Angels Landing you have an unobstructed view to the south and you are on a pinnacle so that's a big wow factor, but from Obs. point you get one big overall view of Zion.

My father and I are going to Zion (from Ohio) in June. He had a knee replacement and is pretty much limited to around 5-7 miles per day now. Is this 3 miles each way or 3 miles total? I'd like to do, but also want to go on other hikes as well. Thanks for the help!
Sorry I mean 3 miles each way. 3 miles fairly steep grade uphill.
