There is of course, more than one monument at Omaha Beach but this TA entry refers to the large stone memorial which is known as a ‘Signal Monument’. It stands on the Omaha beachfront promenade (and is not connected with the Cemetery).
It is one of a series of 10 Signal Monuments which are markers of key WWII D-Day locations along the Normandy coastline.
If like us, you are spending some time exploring the D-Day beaches and surroundings WWII sites, you will likely see more of them
Each of the 5 D-Day landing beaches has at least one signal marker. Of the five, Omaha was the bloodiest with the largest number of casualties, - at least 2,400 casualties in one single day.
The first of these monuments was erected quickly in 1950, just a few years after the war had ended. When peace finally arrived, there was a strong drive to commemorate the sacrifices of those who had fought.
They are heavy, solid looking, stone structures and were designed to look like the stern of a ship arriving at French shores.
Their weight and solidity gives a sense of permanence. Perhaps after two world wars, people needed to feel that this new peace was forever.
Each signal monument has a simple but different inscription. Prominently carved lettering, in both English and French, reads, “The Allied Forces landing on this shore which they call Omaha Beach liberate Europe – June 6 1944”.
Behind the Omaha Monument, the sea and sand stretch into the distance. Immediately behind, you can see the steel wings of the modern abstract memorial, Les Barnes, rising out of the sand.
NOTE: Many of the photos and reviews below are about the Normandy American Cemetery but this is a different TripAdvisor listing. If you are planning to visit the cemetery, it's more helpful to look up this listing separately as it has over 5,900 reviews.

Very organised and spotlessly looked after. The information centre was well worth the visit and informative with interesting artefacts. The rows of crosses, in sight of the huge Omaha beach, was sobering. You simply have to respect what those soldiers gave up so far from home.

Very nice. Several tour groups were loud. We remained quiet . A lot to see in the area. We cramped too much into 3hours. Great parking, beautifully maintained. You cannot go up to a tombstone and place a penny. I guess unless you have permission. The museum is helpful to explain. We saw Omaha beach first. If driving to Paris expect a lot of traffic. I guess to/from. So much traffic.
We would have liked more time but wanted to get back to Paris, mussed Giverny because too much time in traffic. Plan accordingly.

A must-see place not to be missed, a moment of reflection in a magnificent place.
It is incredibly well maintained out of respect for the soldiers who came to fight on our land.

Nearly 10,000 American servicemen are buried here, on French soil. The cemetery and grounds are meticulously maintained. The reflection pond, memorials and graves makes one very humble. This was on my husband's bucket list and we are so grateful we were able to see this. The museums are full of great information and the maps of the invasion are mind boggling. You cannot wander between the headstones any longer. The German bunkers sent chills up our bodies and Omaha Beach is so much larger than we expected. If in Normandy, you must go and pay your respects to all who lost their lives for our freedom.

The American cemetery at Omaha Beach, FR sits on a promontory above the beach. 9300+ are buried on this cliff on French land maintained by the US. Start in the visitor's center and watch the films in two theaters before exploring the cemetery. You can no longer walk amongst the graves and must stay on the walkways.

Visited on a warm September day, with the marble crosses gleaming in the sun. A moving testament to those who paid the supreme price for freedom

Absolutely worth the visit. This places makes you think about the horrors of war. It makes you go completely quiet and it makes you feel humble.
