The mangroves are really impressive, the centuries-old roots are amazing. You can see a few crabs on the shore, but they are too quick to photograph. Otherwise, to be honest, you don't see much. Very few birds and just the crabs. A quick stop at the bar, then the tour went back. A nice short trip, nothing more.

We had a wonderful timeless time with our Action Pack guide. It allowed us to discover the history of the place as well as the fauna and flora.
Arriving at the bar we were able to taste freshly cut coconut and take a short walk in the garden.
This is a must-do activity during your trip to Dominica.

Yeah, this was a terrific boat ride, very atmospheric and memorable.
Slightly weird bar in the middle of the trip but we saw Calypso's house from Pirates of the Caribbean. Except it's more of a shed.
Our guide was fun and informative, thanks Spesh and we took a zillion photos.

The Indian River is a wonderful little journey through the rainforest and a clear recommendation for Dominica.
The two of us, a couple and their teenage children, took a taxi from the port for €40 per person, first to the river, then to Fort Shirley and then back to the port.
The river is in a nature reserve, so you have to buy a visitor's ticket at the gas station for $5 per person. The boat trip itself cost us €25 per person. Our guide was called Sam, but everyone called him by his nickname "Dinosaur" and because there are four different Sams on the river, he preferred that.
Dinosaur is very considerate and environmentally conscious. He only uses a paddle because it is quieter than normal rowing and is committed to ensuring that no more motorboats are allowed on the river because many trees are dying from leaking gasoline.
There was a heavy rain shower during our trip, so we were soaked in no time and the current was too strong to get to the jungle bar by boat. So Dinosaur docked and led us a little way along the bank. The blue land crabs are very shy and all hid during this time.
We were able to take shelter in the jungle bar and dry off until the shower was over. In the meantime we played with a puppy. There is also a cat lying on the bar stools, but it is better not to touch it.
While we were waiting, Dinosaur cut palm leaves into strips and made cranes out of them for all the women on our trip. Then we went back to the boat.

Wonderful tour up the River into a Rain Forest area- twisted trees, tropical flowers at the hidden Bar, local man rows your boat ( 8 passengers) into the dark Forest. After a 30 minute ride, you receive Rum Punch at the Bar, a bathroom nearby and GO DOWN the trail off to the right- hidden flowers galore! This trip is well worth your time and money!

We booked the experience with Titus but then Lawrence took over the tour at the beginning of the river.
Lawrence was a great guide! He told us a lot about the flora and fauna and the history of the island. He also made some palm leaf animals for our kids that they absolutely loved. I highly recommend Lawrence!
The river tour itself was beautiful, we got to see humming birds, iguanas, crabs, fishes and several different birds. We went in the morning (8.30am).

We were with a group from Star Clippers ship and several little boats took us upstream to see the Pirates of the Caribbean house that the witch lived in.
Getting in and out of the boat was VERY unsafe! My wife stumbled getting out and went down on her knees. I saw others fall getting in and out of the small little rickety boats without assistance from anyone. Many people were much older than us and it’s just not safe at all. If one of those boats tipped over there would be a disaster!!
The little river cruise was billed as a place to see lots of birds! Ha! Didn’t see anything but mangroves and a guy hawking coconuts he cut from local tree.
The scenery was pretty but not safe and when we got to a place they served rum it didn’t look at all sterile or clean. Very 3rd world looking.
I would save you money; don’t waste it on an excursion or go if you stay on the island.

Everyone has a nickname in Dominca!
And our guide's nickname, was Spesh.
And he was special!
He knows everything about birds, plants, trees, soil, the full history of the whole island. There is little that you could ask Spesh that he would not be able to answer honestly and in full.
An amazing font of knowledge and an amazing guide from the Karinago tribe. His birth surname is Etienne and I can't recommend him highly enough.
Spesh also made us the most beautiful origami birds from leaves as a gift after our stop off at the bar.

What shall I say about visiting Secret bay at Dominica. Our trip was absolutely spectacular, celebrating our 30 year anniversary. We started our visit with a tour at Indian River with Mr. Fire. He was so knowledgeable about the river. He was born and raised around the Indian River area so he provided a lot of history and gave us a great tour. We could tell that he has been doing tours for awhile. Great asset. He even made us art out of tree leaves, which I will put into a shadow box frame to always remember the time with him. Thank you so much Mr. Fire and hope to see you soon.

Do we need to book anywhere or do we just turn up and there are tour guides there?

Hi we just turned up. If you park on the other side of the road in the bank car park, the guides come across and ask you if you want a trip. Plenty of them. They also have their own car park I think. They will find you anyway!

The tour is not a set time, our guide was called James Bond!! he had all the time in the world for us and like other Dominicans we had the pleasure of meeting he was more than happy to just chill and take time showing us all the beautiful things that there where there from Plants, birdlife and other interesting sights

wenn man auf eigene Faust zum Indian River möchte:
Bekommt man ohne Probleme am Hafen ein Taxi? Sind immer Boote verfügbar oder ist es schwierig, wenn ein Kreuzfahrtschiff im Hafen liegt?
Was kostet das Ganze dann für 2 Erwachsene und 2 Kinder?

Actually I know there are multiple people with boats and ours was arranged by the people who owned the airbnb we stayed at (Hideaways of Tibay Heights).
