I really liked the geography of the place. Although it is small the center is picturesque, not all streets but you find very nice restaurants and places. Also the historical part is worth a short visit.

Good place for a late afternoon stroll or evening dinner. Restaurant buche Perico is recommended in the evening. Catedral museum is worth a short visit.

Reality has exceeded all expectations, long dreamed of visiting this city and seeing the place where Columbus broke new ground! And finally, on the third arrival in the Dominican Republic , we were able to take this tour and enjoy the spirit of antiquity and history: the first stone house of the new world, the first paved street, the first university, the first cathedral - everything tells history , in the cathedral there is an audio guide in Russian - very convenient, the tour is rich in information , regret that free time was not given: Punta Cana is far away and had to go back to the hotel, but I think we'll be back in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo.

We came here with the kids to refresh with a great na-me brand ice cream. Many varieties and arrangements to choose from.
What we liked most was the fact that this place has seating so that you can enjoy your ice cream choice sitting in a spotless and air-conditioned room.

The history of this area is incredible. There are many beautifully preserved colonial buildings and houses. It is amazing to walk around the area and see these historic sites. One drawback was that several sites were closed for restoration. I plan to come back when those are completed.
The area is very safe. There are police everywhere and as a single female traveler, I never once felt in danger or unsafe. The only negative is that there is a lot of pressure to buy personal tours. Many times, walking down the street, I was approached by people asking if I wanted a tour, which was frustrating. I also found that I had to take more cash than I thought I needed. I typically never pay with cash but many places prefer cash, especially small stores. There is also the confusion with tipping, which I never fully figured out. Bars and restaurants add a Propina Legal but apparently the staff never gets that, or so I am told. They prefer cash tips. On that note, I never saw Dominicans leaving tips.
I recommend going alone and not in a tour group. You can easily use Google Maps to research and find all of the places to see and will be a much better experience than being part of a tour group.
Note, you do need a working knowledge of Spanish to come to the Dominican Republic. It's worth the trip to this amazing place!

The colonial zone has some very nice views, but they are ruined by a juniper of electrical cables. Almost everything I saw was inaccessible for various renovations and closed roads. So I could not visit the Alcazar de Colon, the Fifth Dominica, the ministry of San Francisco or even the cathedral because it was Sunday, it was open only for mass and it was not allowed to even walk, as well as, understandably, take photographs. I only visited Parque Colon and Fortaleza Obama. The second is no big deal. The first characteristic but nothing more. I think the most interesting part is some colonial style housing, but, as I said, it is almost all ruined by the work in progress or anyway by a management that seems to me less than optimal of a neighborhood that I really think could be much more valued because it has great potential.

The conservation and importance of so many historic sites should also be the hand of campaigns to avoid so much rubbish in some places. Good food, transport lodging nearby.

Debido a que la zona colonial es un area turistica se puede decir que es segura, de hecho cuenta con un cuerpo de policias dedicado a la zona. La zona centrica de santo domingo donde se encuentran los hoteles de ciudad de cadenas conocidas tambien es seguro, los delincuentes no andan haciendo cosas de manera abierta, sin embargo toca usar el sentido comun y aplicar normas de seguridad basicas. No andar descuidado, mostrando prendas y articulos de valor. Pidan recomendaciones en los hoteles donde se hospedan, documentese antes de salir respecto a los lugares a visitar y sus zonas aledañas, no ande por zonas que no conoce y de las cuales no tiene informacion.

Es recomendable recorrer la zona colonial por cuenta propia?
Puede aparcarse cerca de la ciudad colonial ?
Estamos pensando alquilar un coche en nuestro hotel en La Romana y hacer una excursión por nuestra cuenta al centro y al parque de los 3 ojos.

Si puedes recorrer la zona colonial por tu cuenta, yo lo hice hace un par de dias. Tanto de dia como de noche, realmente no hay muchos lugares para estacionar, en lo que camine solo vi algunas zonas destinadas a los taxistas o calle un poco alejadas. Podrias tomar un taxi en promedio cuestan como 300 pesos dominicanos que son como 6 dolares maso menos. Depende del tipo de cambio del dia. El parque de los tres ojos lo puedes hacer tomando un taxi y contratando el servicio de guia. En la zona colonial hay casetas de servicio al turista, a mi me ayudaron mucho porque te recomiendan los mejores lugares y te dan un mapa de toda la zona colonial. Que te diviertas!
