The caves are probably good, but are currently not open for tourists

We drove from Drapers to Port Antonio on the back road through Nonsuch expecting to visit the caves. It was a perfectly pleasant drive along a narrow but reasonable road through agricultural scenery, and felt a million miles away from the bustle of the tourist beaches. However, there was no indication of where the caves were, and on quizzing our landlady she said they had been shut down. Having been to Jamaica twice now as an independent traveller, this did not come as a big surprise: aside from the 'top twenty' sights that get visited en masse by organised tours from resort complexes and cruise ships, things come and go, and lack signposting or opening times, You really do need local advice and/or guides, not because it's frightfully dangerous as such, but simply in order to get to see things at all! I should like to have been in the position of the reviewer who was able to stay for several weeks and get the inside knowledge. Perhaps next time!

Caves are closed area is not dangerous

Hi i read a review about the nonsuch caves. The review was correct that the caves have been closed for roughly 8 years. I have to disagree that the area is dangerous. The road up is quite narrow and has pot holes however the area itself is generally very friendly. I stayed in nonsuch for 4 weeks, and the locals are great, you experience the real Jamaica not just the tourist side. I have been back for the last 6 years and am looking into buying a plot of land up there. I stayed in a small house rented by a white english lady who lived there with her kids for 7 years. If you want to experience the real jamaican culture then feel definately check out the area. xx

The place has been closed for years - scariest drive to the place

One of things I learnt in Jamaica is to check with the locals instead of relying on technology. After a lazy day in Port Antonio during Christmas and Boxing Day, when most places (including natural wonders) are closed, we decided to venture out to the caves using our GPS.

After a 5min detour from A4, the roads became progressively dangerous. Both in condition and also the neighborhood. We decided to go ahead, until we reached a really narrow bridge where our car would probably have not made it. We were stopped by a local who told us that if we went any further, it would be a risk. We turned back and went to our room.

We found out later from our B&B owner that the place had been closed for over 8yrs because even the locals found the place to be unsafe to be kept open. Apparently the area near the caves are also not safe to drive or hang out. We are glad that we were safe, but it was quite an adventure we didn't want to have with small kids...
