My husband and I just went today, and reached to the peak..
We went with our crocs as we were told by the local they were right shoes to wear. We made it but I would suggested wearing hiking boots, since the trail was really muddy, and slippery.
It took us 7 hours go back and forth, and we started after 12:30 pm which put us 1 hour in the dark hiking back. The good thing is the beautiful creep followed us along

Enter from the WEST for a 3-hour medium-speed round trip with photo stops and time to enjoy the view at the top. Plenty of mud when we visited, but apparently better than before the storms. Shorts are fine. Very little canopy now, so sunscreen is a must!

Si lo tuyo es caminar por caminos, un tanto escabroso y eres hábil y no te perturba la altura, o la vegetación o veredas. Pues esto es para ti. Lo hice con unas amistades, pero el trayecto es bien fuerte, largo y es bien extenuante. Valio. la pena es el pico .hoy por hoy mas alto del bosque, sin duda alguna. Una sola vez y ya, completar esta hazana, para la posteridad. Deben llevar agua, para hidratarse, es para tomarlo en serio y solo lo recomiendo para adultos.

At 41 years old, I hiked up the mountain to El Toro Peak. I don't exercise on a regular basis and was able to do this. I was sore for 2 days after but well worth it!!
A word of caution, there are no bathrooms anywhere. Prepare wisely.

El Pico El Toro es el pico más alto en El Yunque, desde ahí parece que puedes tocar el cielo con las manos.

We attempted El Toro trail. We started from route 186. There was a small sign saying that the trail was under repair. It was on the side so we decided to go ahead since the entrance wasn't blocked. It had rained a lot and the trail was extremely muddy and slippery. So many places we had to grab on to trees on the side of the trail not to fall in the watery mud in the middle on the trail. And to add fun to the adventure, there was these grasses that gave us paper cuts all over our legs and arms. WEAR PANTS AND SLEEVES!! After two hours, we get to the top and couldn't see anything because of the clouds :( we should have picked a better day to hike! Haha! We continued our journey on Winds Trade trail. The trail was in better condition than El Toro but still very muddy and more paper cut grasses. Those trails are not maintained like the El Yunque one. There was even a mudslide that took part of the trail with it so we had to find bypass the slid to get back on the trail. After 4h30 (total to 6:30) we finally made it to the bottom of route 191, where there was two big orange barriers saying "trail under repair". Guess we should have started from that point! Haha!

Красивое место в парке Эль-Юнк. Отмечу проблемы с парковкой в парке и отсутствие еды и воды. В остальном красиво.

El Toro Peak is the highest peak in El Yunque National Forest. You should pick up a map at the Information Center before entering the Park and attempting any Hiking, exploring or driving. You should also bring water and some energy snacks. There is a small parking lot at the base of El Toro which has a sign and map. The Trail is about 4 miles round trip and is challenging as the trail goes up to a 1500 foot elevation through areas that can be muddy and winding. There are some spots past the halfway point that can become extremely hard to navigate. It depends on the amount of rain that may have fallen over the past few days before the climb. It can be quite humid as you are hiking through the Rain Forest. You may want to bring a light jacket as it can be cool at the summit and in case of rain. The views from the summit are magnificent. You can see both the Atlantic and Caribbean as well as some of the towns in the distance.

Hi, we were thinking or an adventurous hike and this one looks fun. I see from other reviews that the trail is not well maintained. Did you experience that? Was it hard to follow without a guide? Thanks! Eddie

I'm assuming you no longer need the answer to this question since I am responding a month later. Just in case you still do though, you can easily navigate the trails by yourself. You really do not need a guide.
