If you love hiking and appreciate pure rainforest, Mt. Gimie is for you. A top sight in St. Lucia. Its height (950 m above sea level) and its remote location may seem intimidating. Don’t be! Start early, pick a sunny day in order to avoid summiting Gimie while in a dense fog. How I’ve done it? I’ve made arrangements with a local guide, Wayne +1 (758) 714-5454 - available on WhatsApp. Started at about 8:00 am in Soufrière, we hired a buggy to get us to Migny, the furthest hamlet to Gimie. We walkef up the rough road for about 40 minutes to get to the trailhead of Mount Gimies. Two hours and 5 min took us to reach the summit. On the way back we stopped at a nearby waterfall to refresh. The summit vistas are superb, with incredible 360° views across the island and beyond. Wayne proved to be an excellent guide, constantly adjusting his hiking pace with mine, telling local stories and being an excellent companion and friend. I highly recommend Wayne!

This is a challenging climb, especially if raining but the waterfall enroute and summit are worth it!

I have heard/read such varying reports on this hike that I feel compelled to contribute a review. My wife and I live in Saint Lucia and are avid hikers but not insanely fit. Having climbed both Gros and Petit Piton, we were excited but a bit apprehensive about Gimie given the lack of info. That said, it was our favorite of the three.

We hired a friend to guide who had done the trek several times and is very familiar with the bush. Our team of five was rounded out by a couple of friends. None of us had climbed Gimie except our guide, but all five of us had done both Pitons. The full trek took us 7 hours and 20 mins with over an hour spent at the top and plenty of stops to enjoy our surroundings along the way.

The first portion was fairly straightforward but the spur to the left can be easily missed, which we did, perhaps adding another 30 mins to the trip after backtracking. The trail then steeply descends to the river which was largely dry and easy to cross in April. We selected this month as one of the drier for this reason, and of course not to be soaked by the rain. Doing this trek in the rain would be a different story all together and could potentially make things a bit dangerous and certainly less enjoyable.

After crossing the river the trail then takes you through some lovely forest filled with towering Chatanye and Gommier trees before reaching the main assent up Gimie. This section becomes quite steep and you will likely need to use your hands as much as your feet as you scramble up using roots and branches. That said, I never felt endangered as we did during the last 25% of Petit Piton with the ropes and significant drops. There are places where you need to concentrate, but I was never nervous about falling or being compromised. The last portion of the trek before the top takes you through some gorgeous montane rainforest/cloud forest which can be identified by the shorter canopy, wetter environment and plentiful amounts of moss.

I’m told it’s common to not have much of a view from the top so I suppose we were quite fortunate. The clouds eventually parted allowing for views of the Pitons, the south and across to Anse la Ray tot he NW. While it wasn’t clear enough to view Saint Vincent (we were hoping to see the ash plume from La Soufriere), this is an absolutely spectacular perspective of the island. We enjoyed lunch and soaked it in. The climb down was slow but save some energy to climb back out of the river valley once you arrive. I carried 2.5 liters of water and could have used more. I ended up drinking straight from the river upon return as this point is above any farming/cattle without any negative effects.

My wife and I both found this hike tougher than Gros Piton yet easier than Petit, though they’re all quite different. We loved the fact that we never came across another human -- the trek was so wild and pristine. I would certainly recommend a guide as the trail is easy to lose at two points (the first spur and then at the river), but fairly obvious overall and reasonably maintained. Having a guide is also a good insurance policy in case an incident occurs, like twisting an ankle and a fall. The trail held more variety in terms of scenery and the fact that it undulated kept it more interesting than the never-ending Stairmaster that is Gros Piton. We came across more than a dozen Saint Lucia Parrots, though most were only heard, as well as the other endemics: Saint Lucia Oriole, Saint Lucia Black Finch, Saint Lucia Warbler (common) and Saint Lucia Pewee. It's a privilege to experience this absolutely beautiful environment at the heart of the island.

This is the most strenuous activity I have ever undertaken. After the hike my quads were burning like never before, and my walking was restricted for the next three days.

I'd describe this as continually climbing or descending trees or roots in mud (this was in December). There is very little "just walking" - or was for me, at any rate.

To summarise my physical condition, last year I hiked Old Man of Coniston, Helvellyn and Scarfell Pike (lake district, England) in three consecutive days with no worries, I do ninety minutes down the gym three times a week, and am forty seven. This hike was on a completely different level to anything I had done before.

I stacked it (UK for an uncoordinated fall) six times , Jordan (hotel activities) five, and Shane (guide) four. One of mine was in the stream for added goodness. The climb took two hours twenty, and the descent two hours thirty. Jordan commented that Gros Piton is about twenty percent of Mount Gimie, which I'd say is about right.

We had a good view at the top - a little misty, although the Pitons were visible, and there are a few other good viewing points during the hike. The main take away from this for me was the sense of achievement.

I drank three litres of water with electrolytes, and had two glucose/mint bars. If you're asthmatic, like me, then make sure you have a reliever inhaler, as the atmosphere is hot and humid, especially in the valley at the lowest point of the hike.

This is a highly strenuous hike and you do need to use all four appendages for about 80% of the hike which previous reviews failed to mention. We hiked with 3 of us and our villa gardener as well as a guide. From start to finish it took us about 6 and a half hours. My husband and I are avid hikers...we've hiked in St Kitts, Colorado, California, Arizona, etc and this hike by far was the most challenging. This was a hike that I definitely had to mentally and physically overcome the challenges. Benefit was definitely the fact that you experience the rainforest and all its beauty it has to offer. Downfall was when we got to the top there was so much cloud coverage, you couldn't even see the island. We went the first week of May and it rained for about half of the hike...mostly on the way back to the car which made it extra slick. Challenging but I definitely think it's worth it.

To avoid getting lost a qualified guide is a must. The hike was much harder than anticipated. While Gros Piton is a walk in the park, Mount Gimmie (it i spelled with 2 ms) is a real hike. Make sure you get going early in the day. Depending on the condition of your group members it is not unusual for some people to take 8 - 9 hours from bottom to top and back. Try to pick a dry day, wear good hiking boots and bring plenty of water. At least until you reach the creek where you can refill your bottle again. Some energy bars and good snacks are always a good idea to take along.

I did this hike with Treasure Tours and Martin was an incredible guide. The hike was hard but if you can run a half marathon it's certainly do-able. We did it in about 5 hours.

First off, it's incredible. You'll likely not see another soul.
Secondly, it feels like a real jungle adventure. You pull yourself over roots, wade across a river and get muddy. :)
There are a few waterfalls and lots of chance to see wildlife. I saw parrots and land crabs.

The guides were incredibly educated and informed. I was thrilled by the amount I learned and saw. Would recommend it to anyone in a heart beat. Also, hiking boots would be nice to have but not required.

This is a fantastic mountain and the hike is a perfect experience. You do not need to be a professional. All you need is a very experienced guide such as Smith Jn Philip.
Very informative and educational. In depth knowledge of plants and birds.
We made it to the top in less than three hours.
Coming down was a lot fun and in less than two hours we had already descended to a wonderful waterfall.
I highly recommend the hike but it requires a bit of preparation.
Have fun.

Very nice hike!
We went with four people, my wife and I, a lokal friend and Mitch, the Guide.
It took us 4:40 way and back in a slow pace with a 30 minute break at the top. The landscape is beautiful, the view is fantastic an you are all the time in untouched nature.
We liked the hike even more than the two Pitons. It is a bit less steep and quieter.
You don’t need ropes or handrails.
The trail is really well kept.
The is no really dangerous part like on the small piton.
The razorgrass at the top is nothing to worry about. There is a lot of it, but it is totally harmless.
The only thing to take care of is not to slip all the time since it is very muddy, but there are plenty of roots to hold on to. If you slip (we did it many times) you will land softly on the muddy soil.
Make sure to bring enough water (2l per person) and good shoes, that is it.
Our guide Mitch is a very nice, caretaking, intelligent and calm person, interesting to talk to and a very experienced guide. He never rushed and told us a lot of interesting Information about St. Lucia.

We definitely recommend the hike. We liked it so much, that we will take our kids (10 and 12) the next time.

The contact to Mitch is: +1 758 2869371, he works full time as a guide for the pitons and mount gimie.

We wish you a lot of fun hiking Mount Gimie

Hard hard hard. This hike is a 20 on a scale of 1-10. Everything others have written is accurate. I don’t think I fully understood the reviews until I did it. It was the most intense 6 hours of my life. I’ve done adventure races in the dead of winter and pouring rain and this hike was the hardest thing I’ve done. I did call Chad - he was available and met me as he said. I was alone and felt like I was in good hands. I will say coming down - the last 2 hours Chad would get well ahead of me and because I was crawling down backwards most the time, I would lose track of the trail and him and would get a little frightened that I was by myself. There is NO ONE else on this trail so you rely on the guide. I was freezing and beyond exhausted when we got out of the woods and I had a change of clothes but wish I had another fleece or something. It was raining hard for the 30 minute hike on the road to the car in the pouring rain which made me even colder. The 2.5 hour drive back to the Body Holiday almost did me in. The biggest negative about the entire island - everything is several hours away. It makes the hiking and the Pitons so far away.

I don’t recommend the hike. I slipped and slid every single step. Never really got to enjoy much of the scenery. I did the Gros Piton last year and it was hard but doable.
Pic of Chad and I at the top. 3 hours in felt ok. The last 3 hours were the hardest- not that any of it was easy.
