Amazing Surprise!
2019年5月 • 家庭
While in the Caymans for a cruise stop we saw signs for $8 personalized hats just passed the perfume shop. We found the small shop around the corner tucked away. We stopped in to get a hat personalized for our 5 year old daughter. SURPRISE! One of our 22 year old twins almost had a heart attack when she realized she was standing on a glass floor over an old step well! It was incredible to see and the store owner explained the history of the well! The prices of souvenirs here were sooooo inexpensive! We bought almost all of our trinkets here! My daughter loves her little pink hat with her name and Cayman Islands on it. He made it right there in front of us!

An Interesting bit of history, but very short tour

It is tricky to find this, as it is now in the middle of a shop! Worth the 10 min it will take you to look at it. Very interesting to understand what happen in Georgetown long ago. Odd that it is in the middle of a shop now, and again very difficult to find.

Interesting site

As previously noted this is located under the floor of a shop that sells hats and tourist stuff like fridge magnets etc. It is interesting to learn now hard it was to get enough freshwater to stock ships.
Unfortunately my photo is not very clear as it is through the thick glass floor.

The business located here is a great value for souvenirs, but he amazing part about this location is the Glass covered historic stepwell used by early settlers int he islands to gather water. A must see in George town, located at Bayshore Mall.

What a great little Gem to find

We were walking by and stopped off here as there is a Scuba exhibit on the island thru the summer. Once you pay the $8 admission fee, there is a 20 minute movie about the history of the step well and the town.

Fun to find

Took a little work and asking questions to find this. I found the most notable thing about it to be that they chose to build a store on top of it. Interesting spot, only takes a moment to visit. It would be much more interesting if it was preserved as it's own site.

Neat piece of history

This place is like a scavenger hunt to find, but it is one of the most unique things in George Town. This is the very reason people started coming to Cayman before the island was settled. Definitely check it out

Historic Stepwell - the very essence of your downtown George Town port-of-call must see

I have lived in the Cayman Islands many many years and only just had the opportunity to seek the historic step-well which turned out to be across the street a couple of minutes walk from the cruise ship landing downtown George Town, Grand Cayman. I was in awe of this most historic monument that previously had a building on top of it therefore little was known of it's existence until new construction began at the site to create tourist shopping. A quick guide to getting there is that it is very close to the historical museum - look for the beautiful Stingrays Fountain and hiding around the corner from the fountain across from Tous store is a tiny hat shop and inside the hat shop is the
historic step-well. A glass large glass floor shows all of the steps and the well below which is deep and immediately brings forth the visions of seamen, sailors, local people and as far back as the pirates filling up fresh water barrels at this sacred watering hole, and what a busy place this must have been as the only source of fresh water back in the days of "the islands time forgot". Nowadays I purposefully visit the historic step-well (which is free to enjoy during the times when the hat shop is open) as I am pulled into a time period of self-sufficiency and strength of will and spirit and happiness of this beautiful three islands nation where Caymanian fortitude reigns supreme both then and now. Enjoy this historical peek into the reality of how it was in olden times for the Caymanian people and seamen and captains and crew passing through these magnificent waters. Imagine the lanterns in hands walking down the slippy steps into the deep and carrying heavy water back up these same coral stone stairs to the top!!

This was one of our stops on the Cayman Food Tour.
It was one of a few wells created many years ago for ships that would be passing that would require fresh water. Apparently many of the wells were built over, but this well was discovered during construction of the building and preserved. It is in a "hat shop" near Kirk Freeport and you can view it through a glass floor...a quick interesting stop.

My wife and I took a tour TASTE OF GEORGETOWN and learned about this Historic Stepwell. If it wasn't for this tour we would have never known. Below I copied and pasted some info on this historic stepwell. It is inside a gift shop, they installed a glass floor so you can see it. People are able to walk on it to be able to purchase souvenirs.

Step Well (George Town)
An historic step well discovered in 2003, is believed to be one of four documented in the maps of British Admiralty Surveyor, George Gauld, in the early 1700s. The well has been preserved in a joint initiative by the National Museum and the Kirkconnell family, on whose property the ancient water source is located. The water was probably used to fill the casks of ships, as it is located close to Grand Cayman’s commercial harbour. The Cayman Islands Water Authority tested the water and rated it still good enough to drink today. Visitors to Bayshore Mall can now view the step well safely through a framed pane of glass set in the floor of one of the shops.
