Fascinating history

No guides due to COVID. There were a few iPads with info but an engaging guide could have brought it all to life. Admission price seemed a bit high for a self-guided experience. We saw everything in about 30 minutes. Glad we checked it out. Important history, especially its role in the slave trade.

Would be better with a guide.

The fort is well maintained. We would have loved to have a guided tour instead of the self guided version. There were a few iPads with information, but there were many iPad stations that were not operating. The admission cost seemed high for the self guided tour.

Fort Was An Enslaved Person Prison
At first I thought this was going to be a boring tour but when I saw the dungeon that all changed. The fort was used to house enslaved individuals. It gave me flashbacks to visiting slaves castles in the Accra, Ghana area. Several of the rooms reminded me of the isolation rooms where "difficult" captives were held. The small openings that peer outward to the outside world. The cooking area with its vent. The stone floors. It all took me back the castles in Ghana.

Well worth the stop.

This old building was a fort, a prison, and more!
2021年6月 • 独自旅游
Fort Christian has existed for centuries as a fort, as a prison, and as even more! The architecture was well preserved. There were many interesting rooms of where inmates were incarcerated, and I took a photograph of myself locked up! I learned about the history of the Danes, the slavery, and the more modern United States Virgin Islands historical individuals. The admission fee was ten dollars ($10.00) to enter, and I was there for about thirty (30) minutes.

Impressive building
Oldest structure on the island and quite impressive looking as you near it and close up. A real landmark.

A great self-guided tour!!!
I don't write a lot of 'activity' reviews (mostly restaurants) but this place was great. If you don't mind a bit of self-guiding, it is the best $10 that I have spent on the island.

The facility is clean and well maintained. A lot of the rooms have wall mounted iPads which provide you with a ton of detail about what you are visiting and how it was used.

The self-guided tour stars in the dungeon and you are introduced to some of the sadder aspects of the history of Danish slave trading. You get to explore every nook and cranny after the dungeon and don't forget to climb the stairs to the ramparts for an absolutely spectacular view of the harbor.

Cool piece of USVI history
I have been coming to St. Thomas since 1966. Feb. 2021 was the first time I have seen Ft. Christian opened. Entrance fee was $10, a value I'd say. The ticketing lady was helpful and delightful, answering any questions we had. WE spent about 1.5 hours self guiding through the fort. It appears it was used mostly as a fort..... and I'm happy I never had to be a guest there. This is not El Morro in San Juan, but if you are a history buff or just like old forts, as do I, It's worth the time to visit...

Downtown Landmark
Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, Fort Christian’s bright red exterior with its 19th century Victorian clock tower is a landmark in downtown Charlotte Amalie. The fort was constructed between 1672-1680 by an expeditionary force from Denmark-Norway, who named the fort after King Christian V. The fort is recognized as the oldest standing structure in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Expanded and modified through the years, its colorful past includes functioning as town center, place of worship, the governor’s residence and until 1983, the island’s police station and jail. The fort is now open as a museum and can be toured. Entrance for non-locals is $10 per person. We peeked through the gate and decided to pass. I found the history to be more interesting than the actual building. There is parking adjacent to both sides of the fort, which makes this a convenient location for exploring downtown.

Interesting Museum - Poor Customer Service
The lady in the ticket office apparently didn't expect anyone to actually come to buy a ticket as I stood at the window for a few minutes attempting to get her attention with my voice while she read some letter. I finally had to knock on the window and she gave some vague, rushed instructions. We ended up giving ourselves a self-guided tour, which certainly wasn't worth the $10 each we had to pay.

The tour guide wow
The guy that is the tour guide there. i cant remember his name. he is so every passionate about this place and the history. It warmed my heart to hear him share with me and my husband and the other couple. Walking around this place makes you feel somethings that no one should ever feel.
